Just reached 20,000 miles and the original fit Dunlop SP2020's have now reached the end. ;) Replace them yesterday with Continentals so hoping for some extra mileage out of these. I was thinking of going with GSMGuy's recommendation for Michelins but although a great tyre I have found these to be a harder and noisier ride in the past (on previous cars) The back 2 Dunlop's still look brand new. Easily good for another 20,000.

My Full Service

Was the service an interim one? i.e. 10,000 or 20,000miles. If so -
Oil Filter Removal Tool

I use the metal strap tool from Halfords. Slip it over the nut and tighten up. Then just unwind it. -
Oil Sensor Workshop. Warning
buford_t_justice replied to Jack's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I changed the software code for my instrument panel to 15421 using VAG-COM. Previous value was 15401. This allowed for the condition of the oil to be considered even though it is set for fixed distance servicing. Now when I switch the engine on I get the "Oil sensor Workshop" message for about 5 seconds. The oil light flashes as well during this time. The level is okay and was replaced, along with the filter about 2000 miles ago. Anyone have any ideas? My thought was that my Galaxy doesn't have an oil sensor, hence why it wasn't originally programmed into the code but I would like to know all the same. Regards. -
Hope you get on okay with the MOT testing regarding the lamps. (auto level etc..) Any chance of some photos of the conversion. I would be really interested in doing something like this myself. My previous car had xenons and I miss the quality of them in the dark but this kit makes it all possible again!!

Vag-com & Things You Can Do With It!
buford_t_justice replied to GSMGuy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I wish I knew. Seems odd though because am I right in thinking that the Galaxy TDi is only available for fixed distance servicing? If so why take account of the oil condition etc.... Would you agree that the third digit in the instrument code is for the servicing type? -
Vag-com & Things You Can Do With It!
buford_t_justice replied to GSMGuy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I'm just wondering why both your software codes both have a "2" as the third code. I reckon this has to do with the servicing schedule. My code currently is "15401", but yours Mike is "13421" (soon to be 15421) and AndyR75 was "00421". From that hyperlink I posted the other day I believe using "2" means fixed service intervals whilst accounting for oil state and temperature. Mine is set to "0" which means fixed servicing without accounting for oil state and temperature. Regards. -
thanks for the info guys.

Seat Belt Warning Display.
buford_t_justice replied to paulmpaciorek's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I got the code from http://de.openobd.org/ VAG-COM does suggest quite a bit of info when it's connected to a true VW / Audi etc.. but not when on the Galaxy. I guess the collaboration with VW and Ford hasn't resulted in all the electronics being made available. The Central Convenience module being a case in point. When connected to my Bora you get plenty of info. -
Can anyone tell me when it became necessary to to release the bleed nipple at the caliper when changing brake pads? It's just that I've changed brake pads on my previous cars with ABS modules for over 10years now and never done this. Equally I've never had any problems either. I just release the cap of the brake servo and wind the piston in. Nor have any of my friends who change brake pads in just the same way.

Service Light - How To Turn Off
buford_t_justice replied to Halloween Man's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
It tells you how to reset the service indicator in the Handbook!! Definitely works on facelift models. Using VAG-COM is definite overkill for this !! -
Seat Belt Warning Display.
buford_t_justice replied to paulmpaciorek's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
To activate the seat belt warning light, you need to add "2" to the first part of the software code for the Instrument panel. For example, my Galaxy is a 2003 TDi Manual Ghia. Original software code "13401". To activate the warning light just recode it to "15401". This software code is designated as XX / X / X / X However because there is no other cabling associated with this it does little more than light up for a few seconds when you first start the car. Regarding the other stuff like the anti-hijack feature or a plip when the alarm is armed/disarmed we can forget it. For this you need access to the Central Convenience feature and we just aint got it. I also have a 2.0 Bora Sport and I've activated this using VAG-COM but we need the correct module. -

Indeed, although try telling that to 'er indoors. She refers to it as a waste of money! What do women know!! -
Vag-com
buford_t_justice replied to buford_t_justice's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I've now managed to get my hands on a VAG-COM cable and able to use the full registered version of the software. I can read fault codes no problem but what about its other features? I've read on other websites about adjustments to central locking, improved accuracy for average MPG, servicing etc... Has anybody been able to make any useful modifications? (not including activating c/c) -

Iain, Have you tried Reg Vardy on Cumbernauld Road for your oil? I get mine from them and they sell it in the 5litre tubs fairly cheap. Regards. -

So let me see..........just the one user of VAG-COM on here. Is that it? -
I'm interested in "investing" in a VAG-COM system and would like to canvass your experiences/opinions etc..... For example: (1) Where did you get your system from? ; (2) Has it met your expectations? ; (3) Would you do anything different if you could buy one again? Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

I can confirm that the part number 1130310 is the Ford SD oil.

In the boot there are two recesses in the trim with what I can only describe as small black catches in the bottom (one each side and close to where the load cover hooks onto) What are they for??

Fitted the unit this morning and not a bad installation if I say so myself! The cable was just long enough for me to store the silver box in the compartment where the battery and relays are. Initial impressions are more power in the pre-turbo revs (i.e. 1000-2000rpm) to the extent that I would have normally expected to drop a gear if I wanted to hurry along and fuel economy that is going to take a full tank to prove. For a journey that I know I average 42mpg I'm now getting 55mpg!! I still don't believe it but I'm gonna fill the tank up and do a test. If this is the case I'll be able to recover the cost of the unit in approx 5 tank-fulls. Still sceptical though!!

20k Service And Oil Issues
buford_t_justice replied to GalMan's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
Can confirm that Ford SD is a semi-synthetic oil. The other stuff Ford do as a 5W40 is Formula S which is a fully synthetic oil but is not comptatible with the VW505.01 spec. -
Performance Diesel Fuel?
buford_t_justice posted a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Does anybody here use BP Ultimate or Shell Diesel Extra and notice anything better/different than your bog-standard Tesco stuff? I tend to be sceptical of these "premium" fuels as I tried Shell Optimax in my last car and noticed nothing different apart from the extra 7/8p litre !!
