  1. Age of your car? Do you have the aircon switched on? On post-facelift models, the fans run when the aircon is switched on even if the water temp is cold. The fans are variable speed, so if you think they are only runing when you can hear them from the driver's seat with the window down, you may be mistaken! - they may be running all the time but you just cannot hear them on their low settings. Not sure of the arrangements on earlier models.
  2. I am willing to play a "supporting role" but I don't think you will get very far with Watchdog and the like. It needs to be a "sensational" story to grab the headlines.
  3. Time to buy a big magnet and slap it on underneath the lowest point of the gearbox?
  4. Either get them to stamp the service book stating the mileage at change-over, or get them to program the correct mileage onto the new clocks; it MUST be possible!
  5. From experience, guinea pigs do not bounce very well B) Fortunately it was not me that discovered this :P
  6. Richmond - I thought there is a pub name "Dog and Duck".
  7. I'd have to buy a dog and duck (but I'm teetotal so almost certainly wouldn't  )
  8. Definitely check the inhibitor switch, down under the selector cover somewhere. As fredt says, this has come up quite a few times on this forum now.
  9. ...and on main roads, you have right of way at most junctions. Look for the yellow and white diamond on the main road which means you have priority.
  10. Absolutely - the cost of analysis will be prohibitive! (well, a few hundred quid anyway; try Century Oils  ) and may not tell you how long ago the oil was changed, only its condition. Bearing in mind that if your engine is on variable servicing, the oil will allegedly be "good" for up to 24,000 miles I don't think you have much to worry about. You could get it changed again in say 5,000 miles time just to give you additional peace of mind.
  11. Wouldn't worry about the "service due" indicator - many dealers forget to reset it when they've done the service (or they don't know hpw to do it). If you think they forgot to do the service, just get the next one done early :D If the oil is orange, maybe they used anti-freeze instead of oil :D
  12. If you've got a facelifted Galaxy, the central dash-top storage bin is ripe for modification! Undo 3 torx screws and it comes out complete; looks like there is quite a bit of spare space underneath and alongside it; just need a jigsaw/padsaw, some determination, some imagination and good luck! :D For the Alhambra, try velcro (or other) mounting up on the roof lining where the "bulge" is, by the rear-view mirror - will make it hard to spot from outside the car but should make it easy to read from inside with little chance of sunlight making the screen unreadable. You will need a long power lead if you want to keep it fed with power, and a remote GPS aerial?
  13. Is there a small pin-prick hole causing the leakage? Original hose clips over-tightened and cut through the hose?
  14. A bit worrying that the brake fluid ingress isn't listed as a recall on the Galaxy - but ISTR that it was a recall item so maybe the recall database is wrong?
  15. I think it's so-called because it is a smallish triangle of land enclosed by motorways and railway line(s).
  16. Have you tried Brasso which I think has been suggested before? I've never managed to find anything that will take a scratch out of glass :(
  17. Depends on how much over the MAX mark it is - there will be a tolerance so I never worry if the oil is slightly over. I would tend to agree with your thoughts that the wrong oil has been used though. Ford SD or VW spec 505.01 and nothing else.
  18. Good luck if you're looking for a facelifted diesel Ghia for under
  19. Engine size and petrol or diesel? Did you put the wrong fuel into it? - or fuel contaminated with water?
  20. Check your brake lights are working first and that the bulbs haven't blown, then change the other switch. If this fails to cure the problem, re-post here and we will consider what else it could be.
  21. PD = unit injectors rather than common-rail. Each cylinder has its own miniature high-pressure pump to pressurise the fuel, and they are driven by the camshaft. The lobes that press onto the cams are placed under very high loads, hence the need for special oil to provide adequate lubrication, and the need to change the cambelt regularly!
  22. Do you have your ventilation fan running all the time, when the aircon is off? Check cabin air filter and that the recirculation switch is working correctly. Ideally, you should have the aircon switched on all the time that the outside air is above 2 degrees C. Are you sure that you don't have an under-bonnet exhaust leak that is drawing fumes into the cabin and making you drowsy?
  23. (1) Check that your brakelights are working, or (2) Engine management fault.
  24. Sump breakage does not tie in with driveshaft failure - unless you have been very unlucky and the broken bit pierced the sump (or do they mean the gearbox sump rather than the engine sump?) I would suspect that once the box is back together and re-filled, everything will be OK; ask them to contact you when the work is done and go there in person to witness what happens, rather than just accepting their comments over the phone. On the other hand, was the original diagnosis right? Would a broken driveshaft result in the gearbox oil trickling out?
  25. The "proper" rear-mounted bike carrier or a towbar-mounted one, if you already have a towbar, or take some seats out and put the bikes in the car. If you want to stick them on the roof, you will need to add a step-ladder to the inventory!
