Guys, I'm very much obliged for your help. It all makes sence. Sorry for calling EGR erg  When you say cooler what are you referring to? I'm a rookie - Sorry
I have a May 2001 Ghia 1.9 tdi. I've had it since new. Came with Dunlop 2020s. My neighbour had a 2003 Zetech 1.9 tdi fitted with Michelin Pilots. I have mine from new. I don't remember it ever being as good as his. Another neighbour has a 2005 Sharan. I would say it is identical to his Gal and ditto for another mate with an Alhambra. I was dreading your first answer and hoping would say "buy new valve caps" I just don't understand why mine is soo different to three different variants which I woould say all drive better than mine? Of course I may be mad!
My 2001 mk2 Gal is quite diffeerent to my neighbours 2003. I suffers from more road noise and a much less compliant ride. Alittle more engine noise too. I always thought that it was just due to a revised suspension set-up chromed up model. But could it be related to this thread or has anyone any idea how I might be able to improve matters now tha I've decided to keep it. (Credit crunching!) :angry2:
Thanks Gregers I saw that one before. Any ideas why it runs smoother with ERG by-passed. My mechanic really know these PD engines And he's stumped about the limp mode. I think I'll just have to replace stuff hose by hose, valve by valve etc. Its only done 68K and hasn't really run properly for 1/2 of that. ERG by-pass?
My car - 2001 1.9 tdi has many issues. One I would like any helpful advice on in this thread is chugging. I am not sure wheather it is related to the other issues so I will list them. First of all my mechanic bypassed the ERG some time back to stop the car chugging. He did this by inserting a small bolt quite securely into the small hose which comes out of the horizontal pipe on the top. I recently undid this and connected the pipe again and the ghugging has returned. I would prefer to fix the cause of the problem rather than just bunging the hose again. the car has a slightly spluttery idle and chuggs under gentle acceleration. On the odd occasion when the turbo does decide to work, it does not chugg. Other issues which may or may not be relatedare as follows. Iwould like to deal with them in separate threads later. I have a limp mode issue showing P1556 code. Black Smoke. Parking sensor fault. Bulb warning light on instrument cluster which extinguishes when I first press the brake pedal. ( I seem to remember this being the case from new but didn't pay much attention) Poor fuel consumption. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.
All 8 of my sensors are ticking away nicely. When the system is activated I get the 5 second tone and the flashing LED in the switch indicating a fault. I suppose that means a new unit?
Power to the lock is a Red/White wire according to TIS CD The rest of the loom to the lock are coloured Green/Yellow, Green/Blue, Yellow/Blue, Yellow and Brown. 6 in total
Had mine from new. Had A/C system replaced after 2 1/2 yrs Since about 20K It hasn't run properly. Several H7 bulbs MAF Another MAF Brake light switch ERG bypassed (as it chuggs if it's not) Oodles of black smoke! My mechanic tells me this is unburnt fuel (put it another way - My hard earned CASH) No power under 3000 RPM P1556 fault and none of the three experts who have looked at it have a clue how to put it right. Faulty door lock Faulty LCD display on Climate control display Worst of all No money to buy a new car.
