Only the VW TDI diesel engines please. Please take the Ford Galaxy oil option as including the Alhambra and the Sharan too.hii done my oil, and i used castrol edge for pD engine, makes the engine sound louder !! Quote

big wheel Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 I know this has gone on for five years about oil and nobody seems to agree. So to add fuel to the fire, here is a new one on me. I have a noise in my engine, I am going to put a new cambelt and idler pully on this week. So I thought if I am going to take the sump guard off, I will change the oil as well. So off we trot to the local Fraud dealers to buy the proper cam parts and engine oil. What is the proper oil for a 1.9 tdi PD 05 plate, and this is what he gave me. OPUS fully synthetic 5w/30 from the synopus range, made by Fergson & Menzies in Scotland. What ever happend to people like Duckhams. He is either pulling my chain, or he has just had their Rep in and done him a good deal, but he says that's what they use and it's the best for that engine. So we will give it a go, any thoughts from you oil experts. Quote
tim-spam Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 Almost certainly the wrong oil, and therefore not to be used. It MUST be to VW 505.01, which is normally also a 5W40 grade. Quote
gregers Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 go to agree, there is enough information on this forum about using the correct oil in a tdi(pd)engine, also been posted by peeps yonks back that when they took there cars to a ford dealer and they used the normal diesel oil from there huge tank that they fill everything up with,so i wouldnt trust them as far as............... alane Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 Reading this thread made me check the oil I used a couple of weeks ago to top up my TDI 115 Galaxy. It was fully synthetic 5W/40 oil I bought in France a year or so ago to top up my old 110 TDI Sharan. At the time I'd checked it met the spec for the Sharan. I hadn't thought to look at the spec before putting it in the Galaxy but the oil (Ecotec) only mentions 505.00 although it does meet BMW Longlife spec. I must have put in around 0.4l to top up the (PD spec) oil that has now been in the Galazy for around 4k miles. Should I be worried or will the relatively small quantity really make any difference. Given that previous owners had the car serviced at Ford dealers the PD oil I had put in was probably the first correct spec oil it had since leaving the factory. Lesson learned I'll buy 5l of 505.01 at Halfords next time they have an offer on oil. Best Regards Quote
gregers Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 wouldnt of thought it would cause any probs but im no expert, someone will no doubt, who knows a lot more on oil will tell you.dont forget to check out your local part suppliers,i bought mine for about Quote
Richard gal Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 Ford technical service will still tell you to use the Ford 5/30 super plus (think thats its name) and will stand by any claims... my local Ford workshop man... who is very old and experienced says hes never seen a problem due to the wrong oil in these engines Quote
tim-spam Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Up to 0.5l of non-approved oil is OK. But to reiterate, you must use oil to VW spec. 505.01 (or 506.01 for variable service intervals). It really is quite simple. Quote
big wheel Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Up to 0.5l of non-approved oil is OK. But to reiterate, you must use oil to VW spec. 505.01 (or 506.01 for variable service intervals). It really is quite simple. Here is something for you all to play with... www.opieoils.co.uk If you click on engine oils, then find the product for my car, say 05 Galaxy 1.9 diesel. You get your famous Miller pd 5/40 oil that tim-spam goes on about. Now do the same again with but with a Sharan or Alambra and you get Miller's 5/30 longlife oil this time. I thought they were the same engine, you can even try the passat. All the VW's seem to use the same 5/30 longlife oil. Somebody please explain. Quote
tim-spam Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 It's possible that this is referring to cars with variable service intervals, in which case it will be to VW 506.01. Or, it may simply be that the site is wrong. Quote
Jayton Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 0.4L will be fine to top up with, you can use up to a litre of the same weight non-spec diesel oil. I'll have to ask opi why the difference on their site... Quote
spidermonkey Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 hi woundering if any one can help. Done an oil change on my 2000 110TDi with the recommended oil from shop (comma fully synthetic 5w-40) since then the car spokes more and does not run right, and i am getting a strange side affect of the speedo reading, even if i am setting still and when it does you can hear a change to the engin note. may just be a red herring but really worried car is going to really go wrong. Please help Steve Quote
daddyfixit Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 ford handbook says 5-30, but vw say pds are 5-40-i would rather trust the maker than the badge provider. but get the 5-40pd oil from ford dealer!!! Quote
Rosie Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Hi I have used Halfords own brand oil for diesels ( Bronze Canister since new ). My car has now just completed 183,000 miles since 1999 ant still going strong. Quote
spidermonkey Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Hi GuysThanks for the respones, i have since swiched to 15-40 and the car runs much better, just need to sort out my speedo then car is all good. Cheers Steve Quote
MadBaz Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Just got my first diesel car (02 115ps 102k been fairly well looked after) what are the oil change intervals that people would recommend on a car that now does 350 miles p/w of fairly gentle urban driving. I was thinking every 8k. I take it the bogof at Lidl for 5 litres for Quote
chrispb123456 Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Make sure the spec is 505.01 PD engines Quote
wishbone Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 my 03 115 tdi has fixed service intervals of 10000mls.the handbook says 506.01 oil but i thought that was for longer intervals?should i be using fully synthetic 505/01 oil as up to now i have been using 5/30 auto shop recommended semi synthetic oil? thanks for any replies Quote
adam2303 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 As I understand it all the 2000 - 2006 PD engines (which your 115 TDi is) should use 505.01 5W40 Fully Synth oil. (vw spec) I have the same, stuck my reg into Eurocarparts and called VW to confirm. If you go to Halfords beware their 5W40 fully synth is 505.01 in the 5L bottle, but 505.00 in the 1L bottle? Quote
DaveJH Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Quantum Platinum Engine Oil 5W-40 fully synth, VW505.01 for PD engines (fixed service interval) is currently on special offer at TPS (Trade Part Specialists), Wed 28 March - Friday 30th March 2012, 5ltr for 14.99 + VAT (17.99 incl VAT) I have just stocked up with 2 years worth of oil since oil/fuel prices are not likely to come down and this is a good offer (esp. c.f.
