shavedchimp Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 I have a Mk. 1 Sharan which probably needs a cambelt change. I have a few questions regarding this, if you can help: Is it worth using genuine VW parts, instead of substitute parts? When purchasing a timing belt, do I need to get the whole timing belt kit, or just the belt? Would a garage change just the belt, or is it standard to fit/change the other things such as tensioners, or can the old ones be used? Any replies welcome Peter Quote
MadBaz Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 I've never done one but from what I gather the tensioners are just as important, not sure if it's applicable to the MK1 but I've seen several people suggest getting the water pump done at the same time. Quote

shavedchimp Posted May 8, 2012 Author Report Posted May 8, 2012 How important is it to use genuine parts on a job like this? Do you know roughly what the price difference is? Quote
a18nkd Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 i was told to replace the water pump as when the new tention of the belt is on it sometimes causes the bearings in the water pump to leak couple of weeks later the you will have the cost of putting a new one in again might as well do it while you have access to it Quote
