wizza Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 My old galaxy is losing illumination on the dash board, can't read the fuel guage at night, the clock in the roof panel light is out, the auto gear shift not illuminated. Last night the speedo went out and came back on. Any advice on how to correct these things? By the way I am not to handy... Grateful for a steer, should it be bulbs that are easy to fix , how? Or I will leave it alone. Something else I noticed is that when travelling at steady revs, the rev counter jumps by about 3-5000 every 15-25 seconds, whats that all about (it has done 187K and we still love it). Quote
seanwhu Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Hi The clock comes out and there is a very small bulb in there that unscrews, cost about a Quote
wizza Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 Thanks Seanwhu, I will try and pop the clock out. The dash board dimmer works, it's the individual instrument illumination that is missing, really annoying. The missing illumination for the auto gear shift is very irritating too, even though we've been driving the car for over 10 years! Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 The dash clocks are removable once the trim surround is removed, there are 4 capless bulbs the same ones as used in front side lights. Quote
wizza Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 How do you get the clock out of the front part of the roof ? Do you pop a screw driver behind it? I don't want to cause damage way more than the cost of a bulb! Quote

wizza Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 Seatkid, that was brill. Thank you so much. Any Advice or links on the the dash board lights for the fuel guage or the gear change (I'm taking Seanwhu's advice and leaving the gear change unless you come up with a fool proof remedy with a link....) At least I'll be able to do the clock, thanks guys. Quote

Lower the steering column to its lowest position to give you some more room (flick down the lever located under the column if you dont know how) 2. Look under the black plastic hood/trim that sits on the instument cluster - you will see a couple of pozidrive screws - remove these and then gently pull the hood out. 3. You will then see the cluster is held in by 4 posidrive screws around the edge of the cluster. Remove these and the cluster can then be pulled out. 4. On the rear of the cluster you will see where the lights go. On mine (Mk1 1998) there are two standard bayonet 4w 12V bulbs of the same type that go in the rear parking lights. I replaced with standard 5W bulbs. They are held in two plastic holder which you twist and pops out with bulb. 5 Reassemble...well... you know how by now. Quote
Lloyd Evans Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 My instrument lighting didn't light (of that makes sense!!) turned out it was the instrument lighting dimmer switch .... Changed that and can see to drive at night ( also heard if the light switch goes this happens worth checking ) Quote
