I have just bought a 2001 diesel galaxy and have noticed that the heater isn't blowing very hot. In fact it's quite lukewarm. I realise this is probably not a vehicle specific problem, but any ideas anyone? It may just be the thermostat but I haven't had time to check. I've been driving diesels for thirty years so I know they take longer to warm up than petrol cars.

hi and welcome to the forum,

what is the temp gauge saying when you have the heater on?

Posted

Almost certainly the aux heater not kicking in.

My aux heater hasn't worked all winter - takes quite a while to reach 90 but it eventually gets there and then I get full heat output.

ok - if you have blower on 4 with full heat, the engine temp falls back a little but by then you're roasted anyhow.

(with global warming, aux heaters will become redundant, I'm just biding my time rather than repairing)

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen, Ebersp

yeah- it was tongue in cheek - still waiting for global warming to arrive here. Surely it must be happening somewhere?

Same as the rainfall - hardly ever stopped raining since December in Manchester and they're talking about drought in other parts of the country. So wiper manufacturers should be ok up North. Sorry, getting way off topic.

Thanks for the replies. Does mine have an auxillary heater? I can't see any exhaust for this like there was on my Sharan. Are they in the same place? And if there is an auxillary heater, shouldn't I have a timer in the car?
Posted
The booster heater should be in the same place under n/s door pillar area, and is fully automatic there is only a timer control if the car had the independent heating option.

It'll soon be summer so probably better sorting the a/c out instead!

I had the same problem. Aux. heater working (if a little randomly), temperature gauge rock steady at 90 degrees but only warm air coming out of the front and rear vents. I had the aux. heater out at the weekend because it was blowing an awful lot of white smoke and my wife was a little nervous despite my best efforts to calm her. Perhaps shouting FIRE when she pulled up doing an excellent impressions of the Red Arrows making a low pass wasn't the best idea.

Took the heater apart on the bench for a look and re-built it, though unfortunately there were no obvious faults. Once back on the car the heater would fire up with the temperature sensor bypassed but only run for a few minutes before locking out with a high temperature fault code, which usually means the electric water pump isn't circulating water to the heater. Took it apart and managed to get it working again (must order some new brushes) and put it back on the car. Now the booster heater is happy and the air coming out of the front and rear vents is actually hot. Really hot!

I suspect the electric water pump has been intermittent ever since I've had the car as the heater has always been warm at best and the booster heater has a mind of it's own. Now I've got to work out why there is hardly any air coming out of the front vents even though the fan makes a racket.

Have you checked/changed the pollen filter if this is choked up it will reduce your air flow

Actually no, I haven't changed it for 3-4 years.

Looks like I know what I'm doing this weekend........
