hi ive just bought a new beru glow plug for my rear aux heater and fitted it , all ok , i started the engine up for about 30 seconds and turned it off , there was a jet engine noise from the rear of the car that when off after a while , i know this is normal as i had a alhambra that did this , my question is that i got no smoke at all out of the exhaust until later that day when i had done about 10 miles and "my god" i had to stop the car as i thought it was on fire it was that bad , it only smoked for around 1 minute then hasnt done it since , the heater is making a noise and when i touched the exhaust it bloody burnt my hand

so i dont know if its working or not , should it blow smoke out all the time while running?

if you start car the heater then fires up a short while after, if your car has run for 10 miles it ought to have got to temp and shut down by then though some of these heaters have a mind of there own and keep going then stopping then starting,! if yours is runing and the exhaust is hot its probly burning of fuel from earlier attempts to start but failed. id leave it running till the smoking burns away. at least its working.

Well done for changing glow plug.

As said heater probably flooded from earlier attempts to start, I know it can be awkward but try to avoid short start stop trips as this cokes the plug causing it to fail prematurely.

You may get a small puff of smoke when heater fires up and shuts down but should be clear all other times.

the bottom right hand torx bolt sheared, so i cant separate the unit!!! its been like that for about 5 years. so i cant get in to try and split the unit to clean it (had oven cleaner spray at the ready as well)

beru 226340 modded plug put in, 2nd hand gauze from another that i had cleaned good and proper with brake cleaner.

mates garage closed so no access to the scanner till tomorrow.

if it smokes now , i am thinking the dosing pump is jammed wide open??? drowning the heater plug so much that its not getting the stuff to ignite---only heating it till it smokes?? so when i pick up the other heater i am going to get the dosing pump as well, rather have it on a shelf here than need 1 later on.

When it is cold enough outside, start the car and just sit in it. After a few minutes you should hear the aux heater start up.

It will sound like a jet engine.

If the heater exhaust is hot with hot air coming out then it is working fine.

Sometime mine will kick out smoke when it tries to start first time round, don't think the glow plug gets hot enough on its first attempt to start.

I also find that if the car has been running for a bit with the aux heater running, I then stop for a short while and then start up again the temp switch does not switch on as the area under the wipers must warm up with the engine heat while stopped.

After a bit of driving it will then switch and start the heater if needed.

Maybe this is what happened to you and it smoked on the attempted start but fired up on the second go and was working when you got home.

It also can take a few runs to get rid of the old unburnt fuel left in the heater from failed starts.

Yes it doesn't take much to either shear or round the heads off the screws, the pump is just a simple solenoid pump but the dosage is controlled by the heater module, the combustion fan pulls in fresh air to burn in the combustion chamber if this is restricted due to build up of soot then it just chocks itself.

You will find it's probably logged flame errors now and locked out

For those that do very short journeys it's worth fitting a switch to operate the aux heater, it will save you money in fuel and save the glow plug failing prematurely

it was locked out again....

have taken it to work twice this week and let the stupid thing smoke itself to death in the car park....i found out that every time i ran it without the exhaust there was no smoke? soon as i re-fitted the exhaust pipe it would smoke?

i guessed the actual exhaust box is filled with gunge/slime/tarmac/crap , and the inside of combustion chamber must be as well---even though you cant see into it.

i drilled 2 small holes in the underside of the tiny exhaust box, only 1.5mm and this morning there was a tiny bit of smoke upon heater starting up, drove 10 mins to mates mot station and drove straight on mot ramp to have a look. there was red hot exhaust gases and the holes i drilled where also giving 2 tiny jets of smoke. i think that by reducing the amount of back -pressure by drilling the exhaust box, it has affected the combustion process so that its now better and cleaner !!!! or this is all coincidental with putting in a cleaned-up gauze for the heater plug?

either way, i think its fixed, and a new tailgate loom is the next job on it. after i have stopped my peugeot 306 dturbo from leaking water into its nearside door. (and if you think galaxies get leaks????? try a 306 watering can !!)
