a11mcr Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) Hi this has probably been covered on this site but cant get a good answer.i have just bought a 1997 1.9tdi 90bhp ghia x with 92,000 miles on the clock, i drove this home on saturday at a very steady 70mph all motorway's (210 mile trip) though it was very sluggish and returned an overall 41.4mpg and i want to know if this is normal ( as i feel its poor!)on sunday i took it for a small 40 mile trip localy round the shops and got 21.8mpg (my mondeo gets 40+ round town)please share any views on the matter and anything i could do to get it better? as looking at this i think i may keep my mondeo tdcikind regardsmark Edited April 27, 2010 by a11mcr Quote
big_kev Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 41.4 mpg is pretty much what you would expect for this journey. 21.8 mpg seems a bit low .However this could still be correct depending upon actual time spent with engine running. Quote
gregers Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 remember this car weighs in at nearly 2 tonnes, and depending on your right foot will reflect on the reading. Quote
zorgman Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 as a rough guide my display never goes below 40mpg and a tenner gives me approx 70miles just knocking about town etc so get calc out as its late and im tired at Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Blimey Greg 3/6d thats about 40 years ago :) ;) Quote
zorgman Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 cant think of that price but remember when maggie thtacher won i was 18 running a jag and sold it when petrol hit Quote
studsmassive Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 i took a trip yesterday that was 200 miles and i got 42 to the gallon all the way and the same back which i thought was good as i was doing 70 mph most of the way , round town i am getting 28-32 depending on the right foot but i will say for once i did not get back ace like i have done with most other cars Quote
ncb Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 OMG Are you telling me 40mpg is good and the sharan/galaxy will do a measly 30mpg in town? Thats what ive been getting and pulling my hair out over it. In previous searches, im sure peoples were getting much more. Infact 35 in town min and 45 average. Am I mistaken ? What are your typical mpg's and what style/type of driving id it doing. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Hi thereGood MPG depends on a few factors .1. How heavy footed you are erratic driving, stop & start heavy braking & wheel spin pull aways wont do much for saving fuel.2.How well is the car running? fully serviced regularly? tyre pressures, I always set my trip meter to zero when filling tank, on local journeys ie, back and fourth to work general running around I can get anywhere from 430 to 500 miles out of a tank, when I go to Germany several times a year I get 580 to 600 miles from a tank full.If you have the trip computer on yours instead of having it on average consumption set it on instantaneous this changes every two seconds it shows you just how light footed you have to be. studsmassive Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 i have to say that i was shocked that the galaxy did not do better mpg i would love to see 48-50 on a run but the car is great as there is plenty of room for my three kids that love to moan at each other and room for dogs and the wife and its betterthan our old mondeo 1.8 petrol on fuel and holds the tourqe when pulling caravan to which we got 28-30 mpg on average ,just would like more power as the 90 bhp lacks a bit Quote

ncb Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) [there maf is dead etc etc with no knowledge on how to check it etc. Heh ZORGMAN. I have:- cleaned the inlet manifold, disabled egr, taken apart turbo to clean the vanes, done the ccv mod, checked for binding brakes, replaced the cat with a straight pipe AND renewed the exhausst, cleared any codes stored in cpu (and not getting any new ones) BUT still have shity, in my view, economy. ie 30mpg average, 38mpg tops on a ten mile motorway cruise. The only thing I can see in vagcom is the actual MAF reading is always double that of what is expected. Usually its the other way round. What does his mean? I hav been searching but cant find any answers. I have replaced the maf with a brand new genuine one but its still the same. WHAT CAUSES HIGH MAF READINGS AND COULD THUS BE A CAUSE FOR POOR ECONOMY?
