Can you provide year and spec. of galaxy.

Also existing tyre details.

Although the answer will most likely be yes you do.

Hi I think it depends on tyre size and that will depend on your year and model mine are 215/55 R 16 97 H rf that also concurs with the sticker on the door pillar.

Double check with a reputable tyre dealer. :)

Load Index number must be 95 or higher. As said above, this means RF/XL tyres in most sizes.

Standard 225/50R17 tyre is 94 rated, 98 for XL, so non reinforced tyres in this size are not really up to scratch...

I had non-reinforced tyres on my galaxy when I bought it but was ignorant of the fact until my alloys got buckled ! went through 2 alloys before it sunk in - I've bought reinforced (RF) / extra-load (XL) tyres since then and not had any problems (unfortunately then out of warranty so I had no come-back against dealer).

Remember, this is a heavy car and tyre-walls need to support the whole of that weight! Would definitely recommend fitting of rf/xl tyres.

Good luck,

JD

You must have reinforced tyres on a Galaxy , Sharan or Alhambra with a minimum 94Y load index .

Use reinforced tyres of correct speed rating and keep your family safe - or if all goes wrong at least you will keep your insurer's vehicle inspector from finding a get out clause.

Not wishing to hi-jack the thread but if my tyres ( 195/65 R15 ) are marked as having a load rating of 95, does this mean they are reinforced? If not, are my 95 rated tyres ok for my 99 1.9tdi Sharan? or do I need to specifically ask for reinfirced at next tyre change?

195/65R15 tyres that are 95 rated are reinforced/extra load, so they are fine - they will be marked RF or XL. Make sure any replacement tyres are also 95 rated, or specify reinforced.

Standard (non-reinforced) tyres of that size have a 91 load index, reinforced are 95.

Hope this helps. :)

I bet so many people out there are running the wrong spec of tyre and do not realise it.

When i bought my sharan a couple of months ago, it did not have RF/XL tyres and they were the wrong size of tyre.

I am always much happier knowing the history of tyres anyway, so replaced all 4 without any hesitation. Sold the others on ebay!

My neighbour has a Mk1 Alhambra which did not have reinforced tyres fitted as OEM, but my MK 2 has - surely the cars cannot be that different - they've both got the same engine. Interestingly, few years ago the seat dealer refused to test drive my car after changing the dual mass flywheel because the "front tyres were below legal limit" - the car had only passed it's MOT a few days earlier at a major tyre retailer. I agreed to let the dealer change them, but fortunately questioned what they were going to fit - Continental Premium which they assured me had replaced the Eco Contact ones fitted to my car. Not happy, I contacted continental who told me that the Premium ones were not reinforced and should not be fitted to my car. Needless to say that I told the garage they did not have a clue and the service manager agreed o test drive my car himself as the mechanic who was also th MOT tester refused. When I collected the car, I took it straight into the nearest MOT centre who confirmed that the tyres were fine and had several thousand miles left in them.

Legally, the only vehicles that need to have reinforced tyres are commercial vehicles,in the case of the galaxy even the index rating of say 96 is not a legal requirement on a galaxy.although I believe the galaxy came with tyres rated between 96 and 98, the Only legal requirement is you do not over load the tyres.

An index rating of even say 91, means each tyre can carry 615kg which when multiplied by 4, equals a max weight of 2430kg, fully loaded.

It would be up to the owner to not exceed this.Having said that, having tyres rated between 96 and 98 are a good idea as this brings up the tyre carrying weight to 710/750kg each, which means never needing to worry about being overloaded..
