MadBaz Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 I finally got around to replacing outer cv joints and wheel bearings (post with pics to follow) but as usual I've bitten off more than I can chew, anyone have any ideas on how to get the race out of the hub carrier, it's resisted pullers, blowtorch, chisel, hacksaw, a gallon of wd40, broke my reciprocating saw and my favourite lump hammer can't shift it :16: , as I don't have access to induction heating anymore, it's going on the barbie tomorrow whilst I nip down to B&Q for a Dremel, or maybe a jackhammer :P . Bigjeeze Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Do you have access to a large vice perhaps to press it out? Or failing that how about taking it to a local garage if they have a press for a couple of quids. Quote
MadBaz Posted September 1, 2007 Author Report Posted September 1, 2007 I only have a small vice (an engineers kind :16: ), and I need the motor back on the road b4 I take the kids back to the dragons tomorrow, also I like a challenge. Seriously though I'm kinda in deep doo dah, i'm wondering if a bit of heat will soften it up enough to cut with a Dremel anyone done anything similar? Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 I assume you have removed the inner race? If not try and get that out - then try a cold chisel to split the edge - it should split and crack. Other that that you could try putting it in the oven or on the barbie for a while - it may work. The dremel method might work too. Quote
MadBaz Posted September 1, 2007 Author Report Posted September 1, 2007 Cheers BjDone the inner race no probs its the outer thats a right you know what! not much metal to get a puchase on, to top it all I tried to remove the pinch bolt but it sheared so ive got that to drill and tap, removed hub assy with sussy unit attached. Bigjeeze Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 The TIS says "use the special tool" Which appears to be a blank and a bench press - Maybe you could buy a socket that will act as a drift - it's usually the problem of finding something as big as the bearing outer that causes the issues - It might be worth paying Halfords a few bob for one. It's always better by far to wallop it in an as even a way as possible. Good luck! Quote
MadBaz Posted September 1, 2007 Author Report Posted September 1, 2007 Cheers Bj, will do a post for FAQs when I finish it. Quote
sparky Paul Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 (edited) These bearings are usually pressed in, sometimes chilled, and a bench press and some sort of improvised former to replace the proper tool is often the only way to get them out. As an absolute last resort, you could try (or get someone else to) running a stick weld around the inside of the stuck outer race. As the weld cools it contracts and shrinks the bearing race, usually enough for it to tap out. You have to take care not to damage the hub, but it's worked for me in the past - I've removed several outer bearing races this way. Edited September 2, 2007 by sparky Paul Quote
big_kev Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 You could try Plumbers Freeze Spray......might shrink it a bit Quote

andy07 Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Thanx loads Sparky paul for this tip on removing old bearing races, I tried it out of desperation thinking the worsed but on the 1st tap they came half way out, then I cleaned up the hub very quickly and tapped the new bearing in whilst the hub was still warm. nice 1 thanx again. harpster Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 HiWould heating the front wheel bearing and hub with a blow torch help bang out the bearind and doing the reverse to put it back inthanks Quote
Smilge Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Yea it should do as Sparky mentioned. I've used a blow torch and a socket, the same width as the outer race, to drift it out. Worked for me but to be honest, I would take the hub to a garage and get them to press it out as previously suggested. Quote
harpster Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 heyWould a bearing puller do the trick instead of the blow torch method or getting to a garage which is a few miles awaythanks... Quote
Smilge Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Yea if you have the tool...give it a go. Quote
tinker15 Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Hi there I have just changed the f/n/s bearing on my 02 galaxy, all went well (lucky enough to have press at work) put back together now when I went for a test drive the steering judders / vibrates when turning the steering wheel. The problem was not there before replacing the wheel bearing, can't think what I could have done wrong except to turn the steering manually at the wheel to access some of the bolts without the engine running. Could this have caused it?The front wheel spins ok when jacked up. Any help would be much appreciated Quote
tinker15 Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 Update to my judder problem, jacked it up and looked at everything i had done, still none the wiser. took it for another test drive and it got progressively better so I can only presume turning the steering at the hub must have done somthing to the power steering. drives perfect again. :) still none the wiser. chrispb123456 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Did you check power steering fluid level, sounds like you had air in the system. Quote
tim-spam Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 (edited) Alternator pulley may be on its way out. Edited May 26, 2010 by tim-spam Quote
