Why the link to my old post?

After just been advised not to use fuel additives by Big Kev, and thanks Kev for getting me concerned about this, what is the general opinion on fuel additives? Has anyone had any problems that can be put down to using fuel additives?

This has got me concerned now. Starting a discussion on fuel additives.

So Thats Why The Pages Get Stuck Together...
mrchipz replied to AndeeeH's topic in Fun Games and Joke
Sorry. Just had to chuckle to myself! -
I stand corrected! I was nearly right though! LOL I had read though that the EGR valve on 1Z TDI's are active UPTO 3000rpm. I once hooked up to VAG-COM and the ECU was requesting an EGR percentage from tick over. Can't remember the exact details though. With the 1Z though, EGR was like a bolt on extra for an engine not origianally designed around EGR. I believe later model engines had the EGR system incorperated into the whole engine design. ECU monitoring etc. which makes it far more difficult to disable the EGR without throwing up faults from the ECU.

Honestly, it may hurt..... one of the most efficient ways to kill an engine is to use additives. I would not advise you to use Redex or any other additive in a diesel engine....if you think about it, without using additives the diesel engines should be good for at least 150,000 to 200,000 miles....do you think they need any cleaning or other enhancements ? These additives have been around for decades and have never done any good ( usually done harm ) to standard road vehicles. Trust me on this, don't use them. If you want improved performance buy a V6. All the best Kev This is the first time I've been advised not to use fuel additives. You quote 'usually done harm', where do I find out about this. I use REDEX for the increase in economy. I know I have a diesel. They do differ slightly from petrol engines. I think you'll find that Shell do V-Power Diesel at selected stations. Could this not be classed as Premium Diesel. It's certainly priced that way.

EGR is still a bad idea. Talk to any decent mechanic. Its just an attempt at saving the planet from more than likely a natural cycle of global warning etc. Anyway last mot with egr disabled smoke test result was far lower than with it enabled.

Can't say for petrol but i get about 10 percent increase of mpg and range with a whole 2 dose bottle in my 70 litre tank. Will keep injectors clean and boost octane or cetane level of the fuel. Similar to using premium instead of standard fuel i suppose. I don't think it will hurt to give it a try.

Probably in the wrong section here but thought i'd share this with ya all. My local Wilkinson's have got 4 dose bottles of REDEX petrol and diesel for the price of a 2 dose bottle (500ml instead of 250ml). Just bought 3 bottles. Should last for a while.

Doesn't hurt occasionally. I heard that that them TDI's need to be driven 'like their stolen' at least once every trip to prevent the intakes from clogging up. Seen some horrible photo's of air intakes that have been driven 'lightly' to prove the fact too. EGR has a lot to answer for.

How Can I Tell If I Have A 90 Or 110 Bhp Tdi
mrchipz replied to si.miller's topic in Trainee member help
Have you got a TDI badge on the tailgate. If its a red I then it will be a 110. Alsoi check your cambelt cover. There should be a sticker on the top with a barcode. Along with the bar code there will be a code for the engine type. Mine is a 1Z (early 90hp tdi). All other engine codes are 3 letters like AFN. Find your 3 letters and do a search. -
Well said MadBaz!

maybe you should read all the posts again, as "everyone" does not agree with you either over this issue ! and by the way my galaxy does not do over 50 mpg normally that is true, but lady dont make the silly mistake of presuming anything concerning why it does not! The reason it does not is down to choice my choice as to how i drive, swiftly and safely, and not down to any sort of ability issue. Cannot for one minute see anyreason what so ever that getting 60 mpg would be a problem for me except for boredom! and respect for other road users. Clearly you cannot see my point what so ever, as i do not dispute it, but dispute the fact that the only way to do so is not using normal driving for the majority of the driving puplic. Also i feel some have a fixation with the magic 50 number, i mearly would like to point out that 75 is the new 50 so if you read my previous post, you will see that i found it extremly funny that fuel economy and the galaxy are forever being mentioned in the same breath! like 50 mpg is something great! in todays car market! "unfair" there is nothing unfair in comparing the punto to the galaxy! the galaxy has a diesel engine that is sopposed to be 20/30% more effiecent, and the fact that your own allie SK claims the drag of the galaxy is merely 0.34,{the punto is no better} and that once moving weight does not play a major issue . " source bmw" then yet again you do not know what you are talking about! and now i await your rant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Moving weight does not play a major issue' What a load of cobblers! You push a wheel barrow with a bag of cement in it up hill then try pushing a Galaxy up hill with 10 bags of cement in it. I think you'll notice the difference! Even if BMW did quote it, y repeat it if you know it can't be right!

What are those little blue squares for under my membership details on the left hand side of posts?

i am indeed glad you are happy with your galaxy,i bought mine as a towcar but it has proved itself to be a decent vehicle. "last laugh" not sure about that bit, i assume those who have bought expensive gas guzzlers did so because they could and they can afford to run them too. I only get around low 40s mpg out of my galaxy 50mpg was achieved over a 500 mile run through italy austria germany to fill up point in luxemburg, which i was not totally happy with given that the same run took 1.5 hours less in my other car whilst still achieving over 50 mpg. My point is and has always been if you use the same driving style that some use to get pretty good mpg out of their galaxies and apply them to other cars, then the mpg of the galaxy would be pretty good, but not that good. ie, i get low 40ishmpg out of the galaxy on my regular run.If i use the wifes punto [petrol] and it take my the same time to get there i get mid 40mpg whilst using cheaper fuel. Bit of a weight difference between a Galaxy and a Punto though. Not a fair comparison. Like to see ya get 7 in a punto legally! If you have option of having 2 cars to choose from all well and good. Me personally, i'd sooner have 1 car that does the lot. Welcome to the Sharalaxy!

Just a thought. Does anyone know if we have Fraud or VW gearboxes in the TDI Galaxys?
-
Don't do it! Just don't. If you like your engine running fine then don't. The diesel is not only used as a fuel but lubricates the fuel pump and other bits. Using other oils will not do that lubricating bit as well. May run ok for a while but if your planning on keeping your car for a while you'll regret it. If you need more convincing then look at the forums on www.tdiclub.com. They have some very good advice on the VW tdi engine that Galaxy's use. It might work out cheaper in the short term but not in the long.

Blimey! Surely it not good to let your tank get down that far!
-
Even though my old gal is doin just fine, I wouldn't mind a newer one! ;)
-
25 mpg! Ouch! Hope u don't have far to go....

Crikey! Calm down people its only a forum. Will think twice before starting a new thread next time.

Poor kid. Don't let your mum do your make up again! LOL.

I understand the fuel comps can be un-reliable for some people. I must admit mine slightly understates my actual mpg's. I've done several vented top ups and measured miles from fuel used etc. and fuel comp always understates and under estimates range left. Had 56.6 on a trip before. When I do an economy tank, I always compare range meter to how many miles i've done and add them both together to get total range of the tank. As i use diesel and go through the tank, the total worked out range always increses as the needle goes down.

Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone has managed to get 1000 miles from a tank of diesel (obviously) in their Galaxy yet? I've managed to get 926 miles and the fuel light hadn't even come on. The needle hadn't moved over the last 50ish miles. Thought it was stuck so darn't take it any further. That was using a double dose of REDEX in the summer diesel at the time and driving as economically as possible with high tyre pressures about 45psi all round. Most journeys where done on a 30 mile each way trip to work. Fuel comp says there was enough for another 92 miles. Has anyone cracked the 1000 miles? I'd love to hear. Will give it another go next summer.
