New Headlight Bulbs
seatkid replied to Mattcheryl's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The headlamp units for HID and standard halogen are completely different, as the bulbs are completely different design and principle (optically as well as mechanically). The HID units have specific optics for a HID bulb, and have automatic levelling and a wash system must be fitted in order to comply with European/UK regulations. So no you cant fit a HID bulb in a standard headlamp. Detailed explanation about why HID conversion kits are bunkum -
Personally I prefer the Mk IV

Just look for the clearly defined areas as per photos below - these are the bits that throw light to the left - cover up with sticky backed tape making sure to clean the surfaces first to ensure good adhesion.

I once tried some "beambenders", but found that lots of car drivers abroad still flashed me! In any case, one of them flew off halfway through my holiday and at ~

Pity its a VR6...... Just thinking car bodies last a lot longer nowadays, before 1990 a ten year old car would look like a rusty bikeshed. I've yet to see any Mk1 with any serious bodywork issues.....or am I imagining it?

Is that average or AVERAGE????? Anyway its sounds quite an average average although you seem to think it is better than average - more or less........anyway I assume you are an average person and know what AVERAGE means - i.e. mean average....... Just thought I would point it out first before someone else does..... <_<

According to the bible, we all go back to 2 people.......

From what I read e.g. here its only about 100 gallons per acre (rapeseed - most common UK crop) and that would be with a perfect 100% crop. We therefore need to think about invading Europe and sequester France, Netherlands, Germany etc ...... Big_kev....you don't happen to have any Austrian blood somewhere down the line do you? <_<

Well done Dewsy - thats around 39mpg..... Would love to comment further but I'm concentrating on the great crash in the finacial markets which will probably start in earnest this week. I recomend anyone with investments, particularly shares, pensions or Isas tied up with stocks and shares etc to keep their eyes peeled over the next 2 - 3 weeks and be prepared to act quickly. House prices will also start to crash but we all need somewhere to live and it will be a good thing for future generations to see common sense return to house prices.

Remote Locking And Unlocking
seatkid replied to davewill's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Does the MkII fob have one or two batteries? I recall someone posting that the problem was gunked up buttons inside the fob. Requires a careful strip down (not losing that dreaded immobiliser chip!) and some electrical (or brake) cleaner and a small brush to clean the body wax/chip grease/corrosion away. Don't ask me how all that crap gets into your key, all I know is that it does and the same applies to TV remotes etc - when they stop working properly and the battery makes no difference then its time to strip the keypad and wash the grease off! -
Essential - a decent torque wrench c/w sockets/allen key sockets, valve-G clamp, valve lapper/valve grinding paste and a nice clean bench. Take your time and think at each stage, its really annoying when you realise you forgot something after you put it back together. Drain the water before you take off the head- just enough to stop oodles going into the cylinders when you take the head off. While the head is off, inspect the piston crowns/cylinder walls for damage/debris Strip valves and remember/mark where they go - you can't interchange the positions without reseating! Inspect valves and valve seats for damage - a badly damaged valve seat may require a specialist to repair the seat. Replace any valves, cam followers etc. that are suspect - probably better to do all of them. New valves will have to be re-seated, follow the instructions on the grinding paste tin. Alternatively, there may be a specialist who will refurb your head, if you don't feel like doing it yourself - check Yellow pages. Don't forget to use a new head gasket, and to top up the water when you've refitted the head. Patience and time is the biggest requirement

Faulting when starting.

White smoke is due to incomplete combustion brought about by too low chamber temperatures. This is almost always due to low compression. Worn rings, bore wear or even a hole in the piston. -
How To Double The Fuel Economy Of Your Galaxy

I'm sorry you find my remarks offensive, I'll drop the pizza remarks if you drop the slow old fart remarks. What speeding white van men have got to do with this thread (How To Double The Fuel Economy Of Your Galaxy) is beyond me..... -
SK not having a good day.....I was wrong (again) - My Corsa looks as if it has two reversing lights - so maybe its only on certain cars as you may or may not have observed. I have certainly spotted it on small Seats.

NickpV is right with the technical/chemical explanation. Most advertised "Xenon" bulbs are filament bulbs - the marketing is probably meant to confuse people into thinking they are HID - it did me when I first saw them advertised. -
I can understand the attraction of an automatic but consider these points 1. Initial purchase price will be higher 2. Running costs will be higher - significantly higher fuel consumption (~20% more I reckon) - higher VED and insurance - higher repair bills 3. The JATCO box seems to be unreliable/borderline in the Galaxy, you'll not get much for a galaxy with a dead box. 4. If buying second hand, can you be sure the previous owner was kind to the box? Maybe the next generation of Sharan will have a DSG box (and a CR engine) - that maybe worth looking at......

HID are Discharge type bulbs - a bit like a flourescent tube if you like. Very efficient (35w) Xenons are conventional halogen filament bulb filled with extra Xenon gas (which is a halogen) allow it to work at a higher temperature, so whiter/brighter. -

Vagcom shows if the pressure switch is indicating under or over pressure but it cannot detect a faulty or tampered switch.
