  1. The Dual Mass Flywheel should be covered in full under warranty and Yes, its likely that it has caused the gearbox failure. Put your detailed account and claim in writing. Send it to the dealer who changed the DMF and a copy to Ford Customer services along with a covering letter. Get in touch by phone with Ford and discuss. Its likely they will repair the DMF FOC and offer to cover parts cost for gearbox at the very least. 99% of manual gearboxes are expected to last the lifetime of the car and manual gearboxes are definitely NOT classed as a wear and tear item in any manufacturers warranty! Auto gearboxes are perhaps a different kettle of fish.
  2. You can bet your bottom dollar that at least one other major UK bank is now getting or soon to get emergency support from the BOE. This time however, the government and the BOW will keep it under wraps to prevent all hell being let loose.
  3. Bearing at top of strut. I believe its a common problem, search the forum for further info. Apparently a bit of a pig to undo the top nut which often is rusty - use plenty of WD40 the night before.....
  4. They won't go belly up, they'll just get absorbed by someone else at a bargain price. Risk at a bank is with the shareholders not the customers, a building society is somewhat riskier as their members are also their customers. Don't fool yourself into thinking a building society is any safer than a bank. They operate pretty much the same way on a commercial basis. The real criminals are in the City of London, on Wall st. etc. - the investment banks. And the fools that allow them to get away with it are government financial ministers and "advisors". IMO History will show that Greenspan, Brown and co. were the people who initiated the rot and guided us blindly into this whole mess. Yes banks are in it for profit, but none of us work for nothing. The real problem is the West's ideology and western governments obsession with never ending increasing "economic performance" at any price. There's only so far you can go to increase profitability and productivity (e.g just sack everyone but one person - just like I've done- its the ultimate model! ) and wealth just becomes more and more concentrated to fewer and fewer individuals. The 1930's just before the great depression was marked by a feverish period of obscene excess and decadence by the social "elite". Are we seeing something similar today? The difference financially today, however, is existence of a "lender of last resort" - a central bank. They were set up to perform this vital function after the great depression to avoid a repeat of the 30's when a global liquidity crisis led rapidly to widespread insolvency. If you want an easy target to blame, choose BBC, ITV, CH4 and 5 with the "I want to be a property developer" and "how to get rich quick in BTL" program shit they've been pumping out over the last 3 or 4 years. p.s. I wouldn't take a loan out with a "proper bank" (aka investment banks).....they will probably want to keep your wife and kids as collateral and are likely to call in the loan without any notice whatsoever. But I believe they accept internal organs as part payments if you are caught short...... B)
  5. Well done JohnR - a shining example to us all! I would check your dealers (Ford/VW/SEAT) as well as here , here and here for parts. I really think ebay is not the place for disks, unless they can prove who manufactured them. A lot of chinese pattern parts are sold on ebay - not the kind of thing you want to fit on your car!
  6. B) Don't worry, If I lose my savings  , then I'm coming round  to claim your house JK! After all, in a manner of speaking you used my money to buy it! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
  7. Is that like ask Northern Rock customers to form an orderly queue? First, is it still under warranty?? Unfortunately it seems that the Galaxy a/c is immune to standard a/c leak detection. Its a question of working methodically through the few, but difficult to check, items that form the a/c system. First, thoroughly check the condensor (at the front of the vehicle) - in particular remove the plastic cap on the dryer housing - (search forum for pics). Then start through all the pipework, checking at joints and under clips. The pipework is prone to corrosion so look for tell tale signs. You will need to crawl under the engine. Check the joints just beyond the bulkhead padding (search for further info), the padding nicely hides corroded joints. A lot of a/c guys will tell you its the evaporator or compressor, but my feeling is these would be unlikely candidates for leaks (that can't be seen in case of compressor)
  8. Ouch!...... B) Is that plus Vat? In which case....Double Ouch!
  9. Thanks for that vote of confidence BK! (can we ban him on grounds of cruelty to me?) After much reading and research, my conclusions are this:- They won't go bust, NR is illiquid, not insolvent. It hasn't started drawing down the BOE loan yet which is estimated to be up to
  10. Try platform 9 3/4
  11. Ye gads! So that's what they look like!!!
  12. No its a woman thing. You hum it, i'll thin it..... :o
  13. And I thought they used a dice....1st toss = 1st digit, 2nd toss = number of zeroes Silly me...... :o
  14. ...cheered me up.....................a bit....
  15. I'm trying to keep quite calm about all this situation  after all they have just been vetted by the BOE, Treasury, FSA etc as solvent, therefore assets are greater than liabilities, so in theory everyone could withdraw money and there'd still be some left?....... :o *?@#?* And which bank is next?
  16. The 1.4tdi engine in the latest Fabia is a noisy bag of old ball bearings at least the one I drove was. And on the test run, using usual style, it clocked up a really impressive 41mpg. The 1.2 engine in comparison is a peach, much better than the 1.4 petrol btw The point I was making is you should try to dismiss your predudices and preconceptions when buying a car, look at the cold facts and if looking for cheapest cost of ownership, do the sums.
  17. ...but it nearly always does. And the driving characteristics are so much better as well. That's not true Tim! In general the diesel engine premium is around
  18. Build em all on green belt land and not in my back yard (too late - the barstewards are doing that already and making my life a misery). Currently land speculation is the developer's and local government's pig trough. Ban anything above 2 stories high and anything that doesnt have a correctly proportioned rectangular plot. House prices need to come down, down, down. Having a roof over your head should be a fundemental human right, such as access to clean water and a decent sewerage system to prevent disease. House builders are greedy barstewards and something needs to be done. IKEA have some good ideas and house building from what I see. BTL landlords are the scum of the earth and ought to be taxed appropriately. Those who deal in cash and don't declare income (and I am sure there are a lot) should have their houses confiscated. Those who declare they are non-domiciled should have no right to own property in the UK, apart from one house solely for their own use. There should be massive tax support for low to middle income families to get housing affordably - basically increase tax on the super wealthy. I am quite well off (provided Northern Rock don't go bust). I earned my wealth the hard way, however my parents were BTL landlords in their day and I spent a childhood watching the greed mentality grab control of their lives. The stress eventually killed my Dad. I also saw the scum at the bottom of the pile whom the council seem to make their priority to support. However, the future should belong to our children and grandchildren irrespective of their individual talents and abilities...........and should not be held to ransom by "market forces" The effect that immigration has on housing is a difficult one to address......I'll leave that for others to comment.
  19. Sh*t! I have a large part of my life savings in Northern Rock!! :o Don't tell me I'm gonna lose them (again, like I did in 2001-2002 with those fooking precipice bonds.......  ) If banks and building societies go tits up what hope is there for anyone who isn't a bleeding banker???........:angry2: Things are looking bad......real bad.......think 1930's  Sorry bout the language, but I'm a bit upset..........
  20. OK so your the guy thats always behind me! (Raises middle finger in front or rear view mirror)
  21. IIRC the old Tdi engines with conventional distributor pump were OK with biodiesel according to VW. However the newer PD and CR systems have problems. From what I read, the various basic stocks that can be used to produce biodiesel has higher viscosity and reacts very differently under pressure and varying temperature to straight diesel. As manufacturers have had lots of other costly problems (read - failures) with "new technology" diesels and in the present climate of legislation, I think VW and others have understandably distanced themselves from biodiesel (apart from the 5% EN approved type). Any other stance could cost them dear. Basically, use it at your own risk.
  22. I would try disconnecting the battery (after checking I've got the radio code!) for a couple of minutes and reconnecting. Could be a CANBUS (communication bus) problem - maybe a module has crashed, or is faulty. All sorts of information is passed around on the CANBUS. Worth a try for nowt.
  23. Does the noise go when you press the clutch in? In that case its the release bearing. It might be the vacuum pump which is mechanically driven - located at the front of the engine near the gearbox end. or....
  24. Sounds far more like track rod end wear which is a very common fault and an easy job to replace. Never heard of wishbone bush wear on Galaxy....but I might be wrong.
  25. Here's some more advice from the government about how you can save fuel, save the planet and still travel as fast as the law allows. p.s. This advice does not apply to people living in leicestershire who seem to think this advice is cobblers.
