  1. I was very much under the impression that the colour of the base denoted the brightness of the bulb. Anyway it's safer to replace the same coloured base with the same coloured base. You can get the spares from any VW / Audi dealer. Have replaced several bulbs on the back of the dashboard of my Audi 80 over the years - most were orange based, but several indicator bulbs had different coloured bases. Taliska
  2. Seatkid, ever thought of writing for Haynes manual! :D Liked the pictures! Taliska
  3. Hope I'm not being dim here, but VW had a hell'va problem with failing coil packs and they've had to replace loads of them. I think that they decided not to publicise the issue too much as it was too costly to replace them all under a recall so are just fixing them as they go wrong. Is this related in anyway shape or form to the above topic? Taliska
  4. My sentiment also - as the Galaxy has disks all round, it's essential to leave her in gear when parked as she'll roll away when the disks cool off and you're on the slightest slope. Happened once and once only to my Audi! :D Confidence confirmed in you Ivor! :D Taliska
  5. Ivor, you said... Just to put my mind at ease - which way were you suggesting was correct 'in gear' when parked or 'out of gear'? :D By the way, I press the button in - don't seem to feel the need to make a nasty ratchety noise these days. :D Taliska
  6. Thanks both of you, I'll have a close look again at it to see how it's set up - you never know, the kids might keep switching it on when they fiddle. As far as I recall, the TA-D indicator is not normally showing. Taliska.
  7. Why, oh why, does my radio (Model 5000 jobbie) insist on changing stations for the travel announcements. :o I've fiddled with that TA button - I'm at a loss. :o When I select Radio 4, I don't want Radio Solent coming on with the travel news - I don't care because I'm probably already sitting in the traffic jam they're talking about and I don't need to be reminded of it. :o Any ideas? Taliska
  8. Well, I've thought about it and maybe I'm going to try the tactic of not fiddling with the CC controls. I think the practice of turning everything full on in the morning to get warmed up and screen cleared, a method much used on the previous car with no AC/CC, is quite deeply ingrained and maybe conflicting with a system that might work all by itself, albeit with little hints. There are times when whacking up the fan speed is really essential - like in the morning after a curry the night before - and I think the user interface design really doesn't help! Taliska
  9. While flicking though the manual for the radio I noticed the section on the VID field. Well it's a 16 character memory to hold your VIN so that the radio's tied to the car. Why anyone might want to nick the radio is beyond my comprehension! :o So started entering the VIN and, guess what... I ran out of space to hold the full VIN - there's 17 characters stamped onto the car, yet only 16 digits space in the radio... how silly. I guess it's because Ford-built cars have 16 characters VINs but as the Gal is really a VW, then 17 is the norm for them? Ah well... Taliska
  10. Hummm... That Climate Control thingy is far too fiddly - nearly went splat into the back of a Merc while trying to change it to demist the front windscreen. I'm sure that a few well designed control knobs would suffice - you could always twiddle them without having to look at it for too long. Curious how the fiddly-buttoned climate control compares with the fisher-price radio buttons! VW vs Ford? :) Hopefully I might have subconsciously learnt not to look for too long at the CC controls now! Taliska
  11. Funny thing with the horn on the multi-function steering wheel... I hit it more times accidentally than I do intentionally - I've not yet managed to find the horn when I've wanted to blast it. Seem to clip it when turning or when fiddling with the cruise control. It's a silly position where it is( or rather where they are!) Taliska
  12. Right... I'm sitting in the driver's seat and wife comes along and can't open the tailgate. I then jump out of the car to open the tailgate, because somehow I'm being awkward. :) There's something afoot here... and I'm not quite sure what it is... This has happened on more than one occasion and somehow it's never an opportune moment to try to analyse the situation with a wife wanting to open the tailgate and then come and clobber me... Methinks there's some combination where the boot is kept locked - engine running perhaps with maybe foot on brake too? :) Can anyone else enlighten me? Taliska
  13. You're probably right! Taliska
  14. My tip if you live in Hampshire is to ring Micheldever Tyres - always the best prices... Kwik Fit nearly always seem to price match them because otherwise they'd lose the business. Micheldever Tyres is like the McDonalds of the tyre business - you queue up and drive through and get fitted really quickly - the queues can get quite long on a Saturday morning, so beware of turning up late. They'll even supply tyres for earthmoving equipment - I saw one of these massive beasts standing up that had size numbers on it that were too big to be believable! As for tracking... I had an Audi that was only tracked once correctly in its whole life - that was done by William Street Motors in Southampton - can recommend them too. Taliska
  15. Hummm... Did it a few days ago - lent a bit to heavily on it to shuffle myself backwards and now there's a nice elbow-sized dent in the armrest on the door... What now? Taliska
  16. That's the same supplier for Ian Shipton at Burton on Trent! I wonder if you can ring them up and ask who they've supplied recently - worth a try I guess. Here's their address in the UK (looks like a UK branch of the continental company to me)... SPA Rental Limited 19 Chapman Way TN2 Tunbridge Wells Clearly a bit of their postcode has vanished in translation. There's a Belgian garage stamp at the bottom of the label. Hummm... can't find a phone number for them - what a surprise! Taliska
  17. For a start it should be 5W-40 - at least it says so in my manual for the 115 PD! Taliska
  18. If you replace it, I've been told to make sure it's the manufacturer's one as it is supposed to be more specific than most people think. (Advice from a man who worked on them at Lucas!) I know that if you've not got a working one, the engine can work badly from experience with my wife's Seat Cordoba. Three lambda sensors later and the car works fine on cold mornings - plus it now drinks less fuel and gets through its MOT! Taliska
  19. Thanks all, I think getting the roof box on will be quite challenging - will use neighbour methinks, as wife used to struggle a bit when we put it on the old Audi together. Got ye old Thule roofbars that have seen much service and the big Halfords roofbox of a few years ago. Garage is not terribly high inside, so dangling it on would be a tad difficult - the roofbox normally sits leaning against the wall in the garage with the roofbars threaded through ready to go. I must say that I normally take the bars and box off when we arrive at our destination, but I guess not with the Galaxy... I guess we gould get everything for camping in the main body of the car with the back row of seats out as we only have two ankle-biters... I've noticed that when booking some ferries / catermarans they ask you for your vehicle height - with a roofbox on top of a Galaxy, it's going to be darned high, although it will be lower than a campervan! Taliska
  20. Hi all, I've got a large roofbox which I was intending putting on when going on holiday to hold the tent etc. Better to put a damp tent in a roofbox than in the main car... ah, Norway was wet as I recall. Any idea of how much I'll lose on the fuel consumption with it on going at a fair lick? (TDI 115) Have driven several 1000 miles with it on, on my old Audi - never noticed that it was there and it never really affected speed or consumption that much. Despite roofbox manufacturer's warnings of not going over 60mph with the roofbox on - it has been very heavily loaded and been well over 100mph for many hours (where legal, mostly) and never had a problem... It's very difficult washing the roof of a Gal easily, so I wonder how easy it is to load / unload the roofbox. Any thoughts? Thanks all, Taliska
  21. Humm, always wrote mine as 'TDi' - I notice though that the majority of you write 'TDI', so looked about a bit... Skoda, VW, Audi write 'TDI' on their sites - SEAT write 'TDi'. Couldn't find an acronyn on Ford's site, although it says 'TDI' on the back of my Gal. What a pointless waste of cyberspace this topic is - I dare anyone to reply! :) { Got to be better than making sandwiches for tomorrow! <_< } Taliska
  22. Funny, my wife preferred the look of the Alhambra - something to do with not having the 'orrible analogue clock in the dash. Seat dealer was being rather unhelpful - didn't offer a test drive in it so thought 'pooh to you' and bought a darling Gal instead. Taliska
  23. My only thought on the cruise control is... you're not accidentally resting your foot on the clutch pedal when you try to engage (captain) are you? <_< Taliska
  24. Pray tell, why would anyone want a petrol one? <_< Taliska
