  1. The socket in my Mk 1 TDI is under neath the ash tray. Big purple socket. Let us know if you have any luck. Ive bought one of these Vag coms......which refuses to "com" with my Galaxy..!!
  2. Did you manage to get it working with Vista ?
  3. No problem Turk. Since I realised about the "the glow plug problem", as long as the light comes on...either waiting for it to, with the ignition on, or turning the ignition on a few times ....touch wood, the Old Gal has fired up and ran fine. Without the light....she just turns over and over without even sounding interested. Ive already got a new sensor (
  4. Not yet got to the sleepless night stage.....just a shift worker who starts at stupid o'clock in the morning!! :o Strange thing....I wait for the glow plug light...I hear a click....turn the key and off she goes. I have a haynes manual...I thought glow plug relay was labelled as 203 and is located bottom right on the 3rd level?? Thanks again for your help.....we are getting there. ;)
  5. Guys, Strange goings on with my Gal. last night I tried to hook up a vag-com to look for fault codes. I could not seem to get it to communicate proberly, so will have another look tonight. However....as it was trying to communicate, with the ignition turned on....eventually, the glow plug light lit up, I turned the ignition...and away she went!!!! The car run perfectly, so I then stopped it, restarted it and the glow plug light came straight on and she fired up again. I stopped it again, and this time on restart, the glow plug light did not come on.....and the gal would not start. ...left the ignition on for a few mins....then a "click"....then the glow plug ligh back on....and the car starts!! Could the CPS be dodgy, taking time to communicate to the "brain" and until it does, the glow plugs are being told to light up? Or, could it be a glow plug or relay problem?...any ideas? Thanks for sticking with me.
  6. Will do, many thanks.
  7. Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. Ive just got hold of a vac com from Ebay....and it says that my car in not compatible!!! Surely my 1999, 1.9TDI should be OK?? The plug fits in fine, and then it searches and nothing is reported. This thing should work with an alhambra or sharan.....any idea what I am doing wrong??
  8. OH..... Well Ive ordered something!! The guy put my Reg into a computer and told me I had an AFN engine and ordered me a crank / cam sensor. Is this speed sensor the same thing??? At least I did manage to sus out it wnet behind the oil filter....now all Ive got to do is reach the blummin thing.
  9. Cheers mark.. Looks like the sensor goes into the engine behind where the oil filter is. I can just about make out the allen key. The sensor will be here tomorrow and I will have a go as soon as I can. I will let you know how I get on. Thanaks for your help. Steve
  10. Right....have ordered a new CPS from GSF (?)...they said retail price was
  11. Thanks guys. I have a mate who has a vag-com and he will plug it in later this week. I think he got it from ebay and it uses his own lap top to diagnose the problem.....does this sound right? I think he said it will highlight error codes, rather than say things like "Worn track rod end" !! Anyway, if it looks like the CPS, the link to the site will be getting my order. If I can get the old girl back on the road for
  12. Thanks guys for all your help. I will get one of these sensors, keep my fingers crossed and when the old bird fires into life, the beers are on me!! I will keep you informed of how I get on. Thanks again guys
  13. Sorry....cant find the edit button. The red light on the door appears OK, It flashes on and off when the car is locked. It comes on and stays on when the ignition is turned to its first position, then goes off when turning the car over. ...which is what I feel like doing with the blummin thing!!
  14. Thanks for all your helps guys. Please dont fall out over me...or my once adored, Galaxy. Green flag man did not have a machine to plug into the socket beneath the ashtray. However, he says he did see diesel when he loosened the injectors. He seems to think its electrical. I know it will not fix itself...I know its gonna cost me money. i dont have much and I dont want to spend money on bits not needed. I will get an auto electrician to check it out and hopefully I will find out what the problem is. Thanks again to all those who are trying to help. Its much appreciated.
  15. Well, had a bloke out today from green Flag. Not really much help and I am bit disappointed really. it looks like the fuel is OK, He cracked the injectors where they enter the engine and diesel came out when the engine spun over. he sprayed something (brake cleaner??) in the air intake and the car did start!!! However, after a few seconds, it died again and i was not able to rev it at all. The guy seems to think its electrical, with fuel not being allowed to be injected, even thoigh it seem to be reaching the injectors? He did not have a diagnostic machine with him, so could not check anything else out...which pi**ed me off. So, I am still stuck with a car that wont start...even though the guy said..."it should!!" Any ideas as to whether any relays may be suspect, or an immobiliser problem?? Thanks for sticking with me...its starting to get to me now.
  16. Not that I was aware of. In fact, it USED to run sweet as a nut...when it started!! Funnily enough, I did manage to bump it a few weeks ago and it ran fine and started again fine for about 2 weeks.....now its conked out again.
  17. Hi Turk, thanks for the reply. This site is great. When people you dont know and will probably never even meet, take time to try and help others out, its great. As you mention, my 110BHP, 1999TDI has been suffering intermittent problems for a few months now, finally refusing to start about a week or so ago. I am hoping its nothing major and with the little knowledge I have, am trying to work through the simple things. One thing I found last night, is that the glow plug light is not coming on. I see there is another thread about this issue, so I am watching that one. I have also found the brake light switch is u/s....and even I can change that!!....is there a connection between the two? I am sure that I saw the glow plug light flicker when I was messing about with the brake light switch last night. I asked about relay 30....which I now know the TDI doesnt have. I have a friend who has the thing that you plug into the connection hidded under the ash try, but it would not communicate....hopefully it was a problem with his machine as apparently it needs an upgrade to talk to my type of engine... Funny thing is, my engine will still spin over for England, but there is no beeping ignition now. Could the glow plugs actually be the problem....maybe I have even flooded the engine?? I do have home start....if I call them out, will they be able to diagnose the problem. As I said at the start, thanks to all you you who have tried to help me out. Your help is much appreciated.
  18. Thanks for the reply. Just as well i didnt pull the car apart trying to find it. Unfortunately, its nothing simple like changing key fob batteries, as the car did not come with a remote key. looks like it may be the crank sensor then...at least I hope so..(cheaper than fuel pump/ cam belt) ..even though I dont have a spare and I dont think I can change it myself.... ....the non starting saga continues..... Sometimes I really hate my galaxy :)
  19. Guys, Some of you may be aware that I am having problems with my galaxy. Its a late Mk1, 1.9 TDI, 110 BHP, probably one of the last made. It just turns and turns, without even looking interested in starting. It looks like either the crank sensor, which Ive got no hope of doing myself,(God knows why they hide it where you go just about see it, let aone change it) or this relay 30. Now, its just possible that i could do the relay myself (and its the cheaper part)..however, I cant find the relay board....not a good start. I know there is a great guide in the FAQ's, but it looks like its a Mk 2 model. Ive read things like fuse boards that bend down, removal of dash boards, 3 level or relays and even not having a relay 30. Can anyone let me know where I should start looking for the relay board so I can check this relay out? I have to say, that what I can see looks very much like the fuse panel shown in the FAQ's guide. Any help is much appreciated.
  20. Was lucky enough to see Bon scott's last ever show at Southampton gaumont (now the mayflower) Great show, one I will never forget. Went back to see ACDC with BJ on the back in black tour and just not the same. Still love the pre 1980 stuff....if I ever get my bl**dy car fixed!!
  21. Many thanks guys, All your help and encouragement is much appreciated. I will get a new sensor and hopefully get back on the road. Steve
  22. Nice one mate, cheered me up reading it. I'm not much of a mechanic, but am capable of doing the easier jobs, I'm just down about the car, the inconvenience, and that i cant even find a simple lead... I did read that the connection is where the gearbox and engine join together, front left of engine...but I cant see it. Not too sure about the 5 min job though, as I was out there last night for an hour and couldnt even find the cable...hence the post. Thanks again.
  23. Thanks Willie. I am feeling pretty down at the mo. Having to borrow parents car just to get kids to school. Car wont go, just keeps spinning over...and I cant even find where the sensor is. Can I see it from the top of the engine? Is is mounted anywhere near the oil filter, or is it the other side by the air intake? Looks like relay 30 is OK, as I can see diesel at the pump when spinning over? Any help gratefully accepted.
  24. Hi Guys, My Galaxy (Mk 1, 110, TDI) wont start. Initially it would only play up when warm, but now it wont start at all. The engine spins OK, but wont fire. Ignition seems to beep 5 times which I think means the crank shaft sensor is at fault? If so, is it easy to change for the DIY mechanic or do I need to take it to a garage? ....Oh...and is it expensive?? Many thanks. Steve
  25. This is the problem i have. The car is now sat on the drive, trying to look pretty. It started first turn this morning, but refuses to start again. Can this sensor be checked at home or do I need to take it in to a garage? Why would the timing go "out" after being correct for 1000's of miles? Thanks
