Noisy Clattery Diesel
chrislloydie replied to chrislloydie's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The noise I get on acceleration is hard to describe. Its a kind of low growling noise but if you listen carefully if sounds like a knocking. Like something is bouncing around when you put your foot down. Only happens under load. Does the aux belt tensioner make this kind of noise? If its the aux belt tensioner would it be noisy all the time as mine only does it under load. -

So I should plug the vacuum pipe on the top of the egr and leave the other vaccuum pipe connected? As ive already got the blanking plate then figure I may as well fit it anyway. Are you saying it should go where the flexi pipe meets the egr cooler pipe on the left side? -

No one know? Does the blanking plate go where the flexi pipe meets the pipe from the egr cooler or somewhere on the actual egr itself? -

Have you looked inside an EGR valve? Its full of black gunge. Blanking can help with juddering, fuel economy and prevent it from gunging up again and seizing up. -

List Of Problems To Tackle

The growling noise isn't a wheel bearing, it's definitely engine related. Car sounds lovely when idling or cruising and accelerating gently. But put your foot down to accelerate from standstill or in gear and the growling noise begins. -

List Of Problems To Tackle

Oops. 5. Car seems slightly down on power. 0-60 is okay at about 15 seconds or so. But after that it struggles and can only just top 100mph. -
I have a list of problems with the galaxy, some small, small bigger. Looking for tips, advice or solutions please. 1. Horrible growling noise from drivers side engine when accelerating hard. When cruising or accelerating gently car is fine. Open drivers window and noise seems less but maybe cos of outside noise drownin it out. 2. When using the auto kickdown function, car drops a gear, makes a lot of engine noise but doesnt really accelerate very well. In fact it probably accelerates quicker driving normally. Ive changed the auto fluid but still the same. 3. Keyfob has become very intermittent. Will normally unlock car after a couple of presses but will only lock the car once in a while. Changed the two batteries but no improvement. Recoded the fob to car but still intermittent operation. 4. The display screen for the trip computer occassionally loses one side of its display. Happens when the weather is warm and very rarely when weather is mild. Its like the screen fades from the top left corner and slowly spreads to middle of the screen. Thats about it for now. Thanks for any help.

Ive seen some on there for the mk3 galaxy. -
Im in the process of fitting an egr blanking plate. However im confused. Does the blanking plate go where the egr bolts on with 4 bolts or does it go where the flexi pipe meets the other pipe which is left and down from the egr unit and there are 2 bolts joining the pipes? That bit is shaped the same as my blanking plate.

Noisy Clattery Diesel
chrislloydie replied to chrislloydie's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
New glow plugs havent cured the problem unfortunately. Car is also very noisy on acceleration but lovely and quiet when cruising. Also seems a little down on power. Im wondering if the timing is out? -

Glow plugs not flow plugs. -

Finally got round to checking my flow plugs and found three of the door to be knackered. Changed all four fairly easily, couple of scary moments when trying to undo the old ones. Lol Will see how it starts from cold over the next few days. Hopefully a bit less smoke and diesel smell. -
Also, what diameter hose did you use mate?

On Board Computer
chrislloydie replied to chrislloydie's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hmm, seems a little bit too techy for me. Lol. Dont suppose any one within a reasonable drive of Milton Keynes or West London has the means to do it and fancies doing mine? -
Cheers Bridgeyboy. Can I ask what brand and spec fluid you used? Did you have any problems with the box that led you to change the atf? Hows it running after the chamge?

On Board Computer

Ah thanks for that. Found by pressing the reset button on the underside of the stalk that you can scroll between programme 1 and programme 2 which as you stated is trip info and overall info. Shame about there not being a range option though. -
Im disappointed that the on board computer in my 02 tdi ghia doesnt give you the 'range' option to show how many miles of diesel you have left. Also, is there any way to stop the average mpg figure resetting every time the engine is switched off. I only get mpg figure for each journey and instant mpg. Is there anyway of changing the settings do I get range and overall mpg readouts?

Sounds like flat battery.

Been noticing some odd behaviour on the autobox over the last few months. When cold, sometimes it feels like its slipping for a second when changing up. Doesnt happen once the car is warmed up. Also there is occasionally a thud when changing gear, only happens if you ease off say to approach a roundabout, then you put your foot down to speed back up yiu get the thud as it changes. Ive bought 5 litres of Comma dexron 3 atf and am gonna get a mechanic friend to give me a hand doing the job. Any suggestions or tips on doing the job?
