Thanks I'll go for the Quantum as its VW and cheap. I've done about 250 miles so far and get a cloud of oil smoke on the first start of the morning. After a couple of seconds, it's fine. That makes me think the valve seals are suspect which is unlikely as they were changed when I got the head reconned?

Rear View Mirror Fixing
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks I'll definitely give it a try. My Fiesta mirror had one of those black stickers holding it one and it's just fallen off. The Galaxy mirror weighs about twice that of the Fiesta one so it's got no chance with a black sticker. -
Hi MM - yes thats right Partco was one Factor that quoted me for the Unipart pump. I was going to say that the timing belt was a bit of overkill - I've just started to sleep at night after the feeler gauges in the back of the cam fiasco a few weeks ago!! So there's no need to buy the housing as well as the pump and it's actually easier to fit without a new housing?

It looks very similar to this one which fits the 1Z engine: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...item=4589145005 and both have the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF MK1 1.6 DIESEL-09/80 listed? I got two quotes from my local factor for a Unipart pump - it was arount

Temperature Troubles?
jimjamjo replied to Steveenduro's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The coolant temperature sender "G62" plugs into the side of the coolant pipe which joins the front of the cylinder head (under the third injector). -

Someone posted a link to a 30 page VW pdf all about the diesel engine. I can't find the link so I've put the pdf it on a website: http://www.cheaty.co.uk/tdi-tech.pdf -
Mines a steady 900

There's a squeaky noise at low revs from the drive belt area, I've just rebuilt the diesel engine after 160,000 and changed the belts and it's still got the same annoying squeak!! Is it worth changing the water pump at this mileage - it may cure the squeak? Also, the Haynes says that you should only use new coolant with new aluminium parts - my coolant has only done 200 miles - would it still be ok? Cheers Paul

Hi I'm about to reattach the rear view mirror for the 3rd time. Any tips please? I've got one of those black sticky pads from Frauds - will that do the job? Thanks Paul

Isn't the thickness down to the grade e.g. 10W40? The smokes gone althogether now after 100miles - apart from a bit on a cold start. What s the best to use once I've run it it?

Power Steering Belt (diesel)
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Bugger - I got the wrong on - it's too fffing big. The old one is 11.9 mm by 725 mm Anyway, according to Halfords apparently the std adjustment is so there's 12.5mm play in the longest section. -
Hi I've got an old belt and the power steering slips in the wet. I've got a new one from Halfords (Fraud didn't have one in Manchester - what a surprise). How tight should it be? I've read this post: http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=1218 and found I haven't got a

Thanks but I checked back with them and they still seem to think it was the right one which I suppose is more reliable than using a Ford spec oil? I've also put a request in with VW tech support 01908 679 121 The oil is part no G 052 162 A2 and it clearly says that its for VW and Audi automatic gears on the bottle. -
Update On Lumpy Start
jimjamjo replied to smoggy7's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I took my injectors off and a local injection specialist checked them for free - you might want to do that - it's very easy. I got a mtr of new braided fuel pipe from eBay also for -
Hi I've done it now so fingers xd!! Just picked up 2 litres of oil for my manual gearbox from the local VW dealer. I was surprised to find that it was ATF so I asked and the guy double checked and said it was the right fluid for the box. Anyone else come across this or is it going to conk out in a couple of weeks?

Thanks It's getting a lot better now after about 40 miles. I'm using semi synth though - bummer it cost

Offside Driveshaft Refit
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks Marcus I tried what you said but it didn't budge - maybe I need to upgrade the home gym? In the end I screwed the hub bolt back into the shaft, angled the shaft slightly up and hit the bolt hard with a brick. The brick smashed in half but it did the job!! You're right, it's just as hard with a new circlip as it was with the old one. Anyway, I've just placed an order for a set of those suspension links that I've seen mentioned on here as mine had a bit of play: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...item=4544221904 Cheers -
Hi I've just rebuilt my 1.9 tdi with honed bores, new std pistons and recon head. Took it down the road and it's smooth but a bit oil smokey. Will that go away as it beds in? Cheers Paul
