Woe Is Me Please Help!
jimjamjo replied to sketchy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I had squeak on idle - popped 2nd hand one off a Passat(I think) in and did the trick. Took 30 mins to swap over. Remember to tap out the brass bushes a little to make fitting easier. -
2.3 Overheating On Idle Part Ii
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Fitted the replacement thermostat and................ nothings changed! Absolutely, nothing. Pause for mickytakers to gather their thoughts.... Just looks like this is normal behaviour for the 2.3. I also received a post today from dp_essex who had identical symptoms for 4 years with his Galaxy and never overheated. His stealer put it down to an oversensitive temp gauge in the instrument cluster. I'm glad that I did the job as it's the only concern I had with the Gal since buying it last month. I'm sure there will be other 2.3 owners who will get some reassurance from this post and not have to go through the same process of elimination. Attached pic of the replacement thermostat which is in a plastic housing. It's a VW part and would be cheaper from VW if you have the part no which is visible in the pic. -
Side Plate On Auto Box
jimjamjo replied to CM2007's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Mike Here's a pic from the TIS. If you haven't got one, search for ford tis on eBay. If its the front plate with about 12 bolts as shown in the pic, you may be able to get better access by removing exhaust etc and lowering the gearbox end. If its similar to the manual box, the mounting is a tight squeeze in the frame until lowered about 6 inches and then the back of the box has to be manueovred around the subframe. Cheers Paul -
Very Strange Running Problem On 1.9tdi
jimjamjo replied to degens's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Could be the limp home kicking in due to a fault code. I'm selling a fault code reader for -
I've got one also. Beats spending 30mins hammering with a screwdriver

Engine Roll Restrictor
jimjamjo replied to viking's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I've been through a couple of those roll restrictors over speed bumps where the front bolt shears off. The big rubber boot on the chassis end looks pretty robust though and I can't see how it could generate a clunking noise if a bit worn? The only way it could, would be if the bolt was rocking around in the chassis bracket. I'd whip it off and inspect if you're that worried about it. They're about 50 quid to replace. Sounds more like diff or CV joints? -
Oil Overfill- Advice On Removing Please.
jimjamjo replied to neiluk's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Similar to mine - a push fit into a rubber seal - little resistance when you pull it out. The 2.3 I bought last month had a service in January. I checked the oil and it was say 1.5cm above the max - up to the bend in the stick. Removed sump plug and drained a litre which brought it down to the max mark - took 3mins as I already had the undertray off. According to Haynes, the difference between max and min is about 1 litre. Interestingly, the oil had an orange hue... -
2.3 Overheating On Idle Part Ii
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks for the collective consensus but I'm still pressing on with it because old parts tend to wear out and I'm sure that it wouldn't have left the showroom with a creeping gauge. I've flushed the engine and rad today but both did seem to be in remarkable condition with fresh water coming out almost instantly. I don't have faith in the 7 year old thermostat though so will be shopping for one on Monday. I cooked it up earlier and did seem to be opening although not massively. -
Hi Zonegod You have a 1999 Galaxy 2.3 GhiaX (you can add it as a signature in My Controls to make life easier) Is it the speed sensor on top of the gearbox at the back? In the pic, its ringed in red but is further back than it looks. When mine got waterlogged, I lost speedo Do I get a Chubba Chub -_-

2.3 Overheating On Idle Part Ii
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I've just spent 1/2 hour monitoring it. At idle, the temperature runs from the middle of the 'R' up to the start of the 'M'. At this point the fans kick in and the temperature drops back down again to the middle of the 'R'. It's not that hot today plus the bonnet was up. I can't see how you could check the radiator for hot-spots as the oil cooler is bolted in front of it and the twin fans are behind it. My gut feeling is that the engine is running a bit too hot due to a blockage somewhere or the thermostat only partially opening. I rang frauds and quickco for a thermostat. They both quoted for a thermostat saying that it can be fitted inside the canister but the Haynes says that the 1998 onwards 2.3 has a sealed canister tht must be renewed as a single unit? Also, I've got a feeling that the previous owner knew there was a problem - he had just spent -
2.3 Overheating On Idle Part Ii
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks for the post SK. I had a new company 2.3 Scorpio back in the nineties and the gauge used to be pretty steady in traffic. Its obviously bugging people as theres some posts on the subject and I'm not getting any confidence watching it creep up the gauge with no sign of settling back down. I think I've picked up the wrong thermostat as the one on the car appears to be in a sealed canister at a t-junction in 3 pipes. The waterpump was a bummer as it was a few hours fiddling around with bits of delicate plastic - the joys of modern car mechanics  -
2.3 Overheating On Idle Part Ii
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Stevoo Wouldn't worry about the pump - as I put in my other post, the one I took out looked and felt in vgc. My Gal has done 60k. I had a diesel Gal before that I covered 167k with the same pump and that was a nasty one with plastic fins. I've been hunting the forum for similar problems and this post in March seems to be identical but theres no outcome. -
Hi I recently bought a 2.3 Mk1 Galaxy. The temperature is fine (middle of NORM) except when idling. It starts creeping up on idle - up to the M mark on the gauge - but goes back to normal as soon as you rev it up. In my last post, I fitted a new water pump but this hasn't made any difference. Any ideas?

2.3 Overheating On Idle

The new waterpump hasn't fixed the problem! To be honest, the old one looked pretty indestructible, turned smoothly and the car has only covered 60K -
2.3 Overheating On Idle
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
ok so I over-reacted  Checked a couple of previous posts and found that the manifold to servo pipe had popped out when engine was jacked up. Thanks be to UK Autos Galaxy Forum yet again. -
2.3 Overheating On Idle
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Just fitted the water pump and it seems to be working but.... Running rough as f*ck and brakes barely work -
If you look on the timing belt cover on the Mk1 TDi the engine number is on a sticker which is hopefully still intact. Mine was 1Z (whereas the V5 engine number showed TD55209 and 1Z was not in the VIN/Chassis number)

Tdi Power Loss 2700rpm
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks SeatKid I'm pretty sure it was the turbo. The MAP was a working unit from the old engine. Newish air filter. Intercooler was unchanged and the hoses not blocked or kinked when refitted. Not sure where the TCS or MAF is.... I had a working spare turbo but didn't get the chance to fit it b4 the car was sold due to noahs ark weather. So if the new owner reads this... fit that turbo that I put in the box of bits in the boot! -

Vag Com Replacement

Don't know about that one but I've got a Launch Creader which is great for basic fault reading and clearing. Just plug it in and it flashes the faults and then clears them on the 1.9Tdi Mk1. (Have sold the car so am selling the reader + manual for -
2.3 Overheating On Idle
jimjamjo replied to jimjamjo's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The fan is working fine. I saw a post by mm or SeatKid about turning the heating on and if the temperature gauge goes down then its the water pump. I tried it and the temperature did go down so I'll probably fit a new pump. Any posts or links about fitting a water pump to a 2.3? -
Hi I recently bought a 2.3 Mk1 Galaxy. The temperature is fine (middle of NORM) except when idling. It starts creeping up on idle - up to the M mark on the gauge - but goes back to normal as soon as you rev it up. Please note my signature still shows the 1.9TDi which is up for sale.

Just to tidy this one up - it was the oil seal at the back of the clutch hydraulic leaking gearoil. I should have shelved out the extra forty squid for a three piece clutch instead of the 2 piece. At 170k miles, the seal was knacked and I didn't realise that the hydraulic would contain the main gearbox oil seal...

Hi all I've just put a replacement engine in and its running very well except for lack of power when you flaw the accelerator uphill at 2700rpm in 4th and 5th. Its had a replacement 2nd hand full engine which came with turbo and injection pump attached. VAG meter (called a CReader) gives code 023F intake manifold pressure. Any help please? Cheers Paul
