  1. Sorry to interrupt all this fun and games but I need help. Boy, do I need help! (I thought I'd say it first) :D I'm having trouble identifying which MAF I need. The Ebay sites seem to work on a limited range of part no's, none of which match mine. The old gal is a Nov '98 GLX - Engine No.WR79992. I can't find or read anything else that may help. Mine has a Bosch part F 00C 2G2 027 on the insert bit and another number, Ford(?) PBT - GF30 ? on the main moulding and insert. I can see no reason why it should not be a standard part so can anyone please give me some guidance?
  2. Thanks Supermum, sorry, Mumof4. Please forgive the creeping senility. I shall persue this now before I forget what it was I wanted it for.
  3. I cleaned my MAF about 6 months ago and it seemed better and I currently have no real complaints apart from a bit of a dead spot at around 3000rpm at full throttle. However, I still suspectct that it's not as it should be because the difference with/without is not that great. I finally decided to lash out and try a new one, only to find that the Ebay shop recommended has been "Closed down". I suppose that I could thrash around to find somewhere else but first, a couple of questions. Has anyone got recent experience of a good deal? Has anyone tried to get some reference output voltages for a known good MAF under set conditions like no load 1000, 2000, 3000 rpm? This could well be a deciding factor in going for replacement and I was going to try this on mine and may still do that but there doesn't seem much point until I have a known good one and it still may be confusing beacuse it would have to depend on everything else being fully functional. Ron.
  4. It always pays to be persistent. My son was travelling down a long straight and a woman (Fact not sexist) pulled out from the right giving him nowhere to go as there was also a car coming in the opposite direction. She admitted liability at that time but later, no doubt after some advice, withdrew it. Nothing in writing! He was with Direct Line and they tried to take the easy way out but he persisted. It took 2 years of constant complaining but he eventually got all of his money back and kept his no-claims. Mind you, he's always given me a hard time!  :D Oh! and well done NikpV!
  5. Neil, Sorry mate. we all seem only to notice the bad ones. However, it's a sad fact that the bloody minded, don't give a damn, type drivers do tend to take refuge in off roaders so it's too easy to relate the cars to that sort of driver rather than the other way round... er.. or do I mean that the other way round ;) ;) I seem to have your problem. we've still got 2 Galaxies and a Picasso and only recently let go a Merc 180 with all the spoilers etc - but no fluffy dice. It's very difficult to get rid of a faithful servant which costs next to nowt to run. Ron.
  6. From your description, it almost seems that he did it on purpose. Does that seem possible?. I always try to keep camera in the car. I've only had to use it once in 40 years and it certainly stopped any argument. It may be worth getting stuck in on this, he may have previous.. or no insurance. He who is most bloody minded usually wins these days. :D Whatever the outcome, I'm sorry to hear about your problem and it looks a deal more than
  7. Sounds like they've got it sussed. It's just that dear old Gordon has made it his life's work to hit the easy targets and he only needs a wiff and he sends the boys in. :P
  8. Our 115BHP running from a cold start in the current season rapidly rises to 40/45 mpg on local journeys in built up areas but it is lower in very heavy traffic. It will do 50mpg on longer journeys driving at legal speeds. This was more like 38mpg in th cold weather but otherwise similar conditions.
  9. Muffking. It sounds like you're getting both. I have no wish to pry but you should check the legality of what you're doing. I used to have a similar but much less lucrative arrangement and my 'employer' got done for tax and NIC on about ten years high end back payments wjth no course for appeal. Not just for me, but for 11 other employees, including himself. It nearly put him out of business!
  10. JohnB is absolutely right. 14p/mile is a rip off. In the Summer, cruising carefully, you should aim for 10 miles/litre, i.e.10p/mile. In the Winter that will fall to 8.5/9 miles/litre which takes you perilously close to 14p/mile leaving nothing for tax, insurance and bills. If you drive above 85, apart from risking a fine, you'll be using most of your 14p on fuel. The government allows you to claim 40p/mile for the first 10k and 25p thereafter and they are not renouned for their generosity so your prospective employers are looking for a mug. To make this pay, you need to be looking at 60/70 mpg and total reliability. I've been doing high mileage with reliable motors for many years and I only got close to 14p/mile 15 years ago! The 'allowance' could balance this out but I believe that the tax office frown very heavily on 2 part arrangements and your prospective employer is either very naive or crafty. Think very carefully. Ron.
  11. It's very interesting to read all of the comments and reassuring that the majority support the speed limits. Sorry to read about JohnB's problem with the "Jobsworth" but I believe that the official line is that a short transient burst over the limit is allowable if the situation justifies it and therein lies the problem. Intelligence and experience are sadly lacking in many of those who make the decisions. I guess you just got unlucky mate. Back to the original M of 4 issue. If you were accellerating into a queue of traffic I should hope that you will be OK because that fits into the above. If you normally accellerate like that, I think that is just inexperience based on watching what others do. Try driving as if fuel were
  12. I hope it works out Russ. I started with the Picasso and moved to the Galaxy and then got a second because it was so useful. I still have all three and, apart from depreciation and fuel at 45 - 55 mpg, I reckon it costs about
  13. Just picked up on this. I've 2 galaxies and a Picasso and love em all. We had the Picasso from new - top of the range diesel
  14. This may sound daft but a new set of tyres from the right place will cost you half of that and you have to get them anyway. That gives you another year to find out what's wrong. It may seem a waste but you can waste a lot more paying for things that may not be necessary. If you can find someone reliable to do the tracking, ask them to check it but not fix it. then take it back to the supplier. Go for it and, now you know you've got a problem, give it some attention and keep us all posted.
  15. It's almost as annoying as those hypcrites who pass you at 100mph and then pull in front of you and slow to 60 when they see a police car parked on the other carriageway. :D :D :( Where's my FIRE button?????
  16. Mine was a slightly different fit but It went in OK. I think I had to take to O ring from the old one. (And this was supplied by FORD!!!) Don't forget to check for broken brittle wiring - especially the earth connection.
  17. There is probably a lot of truth in all of that. Front wheel drive, power steering and a biggish vehicle will always put a lot of stress on tyres, especially if, as many do, one adopts the practice of going from lock to lock in tight spaces without moving or moving very slowly. There is also a lot of weight on the Gal's front end. As I've said, I do not suffer this problem, but I do a fair bit of motorway work and always use the steering very lightly rather than use the full power of the servo system.
  18. Driving under the influence... is probably nearer the mark
  19. Oops!  saved it twice  Just another thought.. what car did you have before, what tyres did you use and how long did they last?
  20. Sorry to have raised the point about the driving but it is a major factor. I know it may sound like a waste of time, but the suggestion of a motorway run will eliminate local road conditions and test the overall 'straightness' of your car. It is now Spring, why not pop off to somewher nice for a day. But put new tyres on first. I'm afraid I have little faith in tracking checks unless I know who they are. My own experience is that they cause more problems than they fix. Please, that is not a critisism but just my experience.
  21. I've had Granadas andScorpios for years and the upholstery was virtually indestructable. Unfortunately, on both of my Galaxies, there are loads of 'crease' marks which do not recover. They seem to occur when anything is leant against it and leaves a depression in the fabric. On my old grannies these would always disappear after cleaning. On the Galaxy they don't. I have to say that most were caused before I got the cars but the effect completely spoils the feel of the interior. Have any of you wise owls had any success in removing these marks?
  22. Sorry to have to say this but, if you're only getting 10k per set of tyres, you have a problem, either with your car or your driving. Different tyres are not going to make that much difference. I got mine with badly scrubbed front tyres and popped some cheapo Avons on. They've done 20K and look good for another 40K. Pop some new ones on and go for a steady long drive on a motorway. After 500 miles, have a look to see if there is any feathering on the edges. If all is OK, your tyres should look as if they've just been fitted. From then on, it's up to you. Ron PS mine has had a very hard life for 140K with many battle scars before I got it!
  23. There are signs in many places that tell you to use all lanes right up to the road works. They appear to be used when the lane closure is long term. Either way, as both John and I try to do is to stop queue jumpers. My argument is that, by using all lanes and filling them up evenly, the jumpers have nowhere to go. All that is left if for drivers to behave rationally at the point of lane closure and if it can be seen that no-one is getting an unfair advantage, this will happen. It is already evident that, under variable speed limit conditions, drivers spread out and the traffic moves well because no-one is trying to outdo anyone else. My original suggestion was that, whatever the rules are, they should be well publishised and not, as happens now, left to individuals to make up their own or be forced to take vigilante type actions which only makes thing worse. Developing this theme, if blatant speeders were removed, there would be less tendency for lane hogging as people driving at the legal limit would not have to run the gauntlet to pass a slower vehicle. You could even argue that lane hogging at the legal speed would not really be a problem. It's all a case of having rules and sticking to them. Hence my qualified support for speed cameras. Just to change the subject somewhat. Are there any opinions on what to do about those unhappy individuals who cannot go anywhere without 1000 watts of tuneless thumping booming out of open windows. I can only assume that, as no normal person could actually derive pleasure from being inside the car with that noise, they suffer it in the cause of causing as much annoyance to the rest of the general public as possible. In that case, I must congratulate them on their success. Or, am I missing something?
  24. I agree john but if you leave the lane clear, people will always jump down it and it also makes the queue 50% longer. Also, when the queue gets long, who knows when it is time to get over. In my experience, it is the people who move over too early that starts the in fighting. I don't go down the outside, I sit in it keeping pace and then when the traffic speeds up and spreads out merging becomes easy across all three lanes, so long as drivers behave like responsible adults (Or is that another oxymoron?) It does work and the idea is spreading slowly. It just needs a little self control.
  25. Oh! And about railways.. How do they get the goods from the railways to all these factory and business sites that are now scattered far and wide. This is going to take some SERIOUS commitment and reorganisation but it would be nice to see some joined up government thinking.
