Hi all, I have a Ford Galaxy 2.8 V6 4x4 Auto. It is an english 1997 "R" reg. I am planning on using it over the summer for towing through France. I am trying to work out the best weight cravan. I am thinking of 1200kg. I think the 4x4 on the galaxy will give me a bit of extra torque on hills. I am using an Isuzu Bighorn at the moment for towing but the top speed is not good. It has 300nm of Torque and 117BHP. The galaxy has 172bhp and about 242NM I think. Will the galaxy be a better tower? I know the MPG will drop into the teens. It is just so much more comfortable than the Isuzu. Andy

Hi all, I have a Ford Galaxy 2.8i V6 Auto , which is 1997 on a "R" Plate. I am going to put on a K&N Filter - but I need to know the neck diameter of the tube after the air filter before the MAF sensor. Anyone know the size? Andy P.S. Is it 70mm / 63mm / 60mm or a different size?

Automatic Won't Go Into 4th
andyfishing replied to jockmonkey's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hiya, Did you have the valve block dye tested to make sure there was no cracks? It is a common fault that the piston dies. Is the fluid level correct? It is a pig to get the height correct as it has to be at 45c. I would get a Ford garage to check it. I hate LPG with a passion as it burns valves, however, unlikely to affect the gearbox. Oil Warning Light
andyfishing replied to phillips's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Okay, Start with the obvious - find the pressure sensor - pull connectors off - give it a good clean. Still doesn't sort ti - change the oil pressure sensor. If still no joy. I take it you have made sure there is not excess back pressure when you take off the oil filler cap and your EGR pipes are unblocked. EGR pipes being bunged up can do weird things. If all this seems fine. Time for a pressure test on each cylinder. If one cylinder is suspect - tie for a strip down and sort out that cylinder. If all fine - then the last thing to check is - is the oil pump not well. I would suspect main delaer for this one. I am not sure if it is a servicable item on the Galaxy without an engine rebuild. It must be 25 years since I saw a oil pump go on a well maintained car. Happy days Andy -
WOW. I have the Galaxy 2.8i 4x4 Auto V6 - that is the GHIA X - the universal opening and closing hasnt worked in the month I have had the car. So I tried what the guy said on fixes and it works. Now switched on. Andy P.S. Regas the aircon on Monday and then I am starting to run out of jobs to do on it.

Hi all, I detailed in a previous post that I was having some problems with Ford Galaxy 2.8l 4x4 Auto 1997. When the auto box was cold it was banging on changing from 1st to 2nd. Furthermore on step hills it was slipping. I have had it to 4 transmissions specialists and all say it needed a rebuild - although, ECU registered no faults. Could be clutch packs, crack in piston in block. Various ideas. Most said the ECU seemed okay - but change it anyway. I had the oil checked etc. It has done 137000 miles. So I bought some Lucas Stop Leak for Auto Transmissions from E-blag. a few friends had said try it. I was only going to lose

Auto Box Help Needed Mk1 V6 4x4
andyfishing replied to jockmonkey's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Mmmm you have checked that your ECU is correct for the 4x4 Auto box that you have bought? There are three different ECU's that are for the Autobox. I have the same car. You can put a normal autobox in - change the half shaft and a different ECU but the 4x4 is brilliant to drive so why try? I would think you are looking at about -
If I try and search in the Technical Section - Galaxy I get:- Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\home\Default\ford.greendatabase.co.uk\htdocs\ford\ips_kernel\classDbMysqlClient.php on line 215 This is every time I search. Andy

Engine Replacement?
andyfishing replied to arnie70's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I would always look to fix an engine. This is not a major job for a garage with all the right equipment. I would do an exhaust test first in the water to see if the head gasket has gone. Even doing a big or small end is not a major problem. If it is a new head rebuild you are probbaly looking at -
Hi all, I have a Mark 1 - Galaxy 2.8 Auto, 4X4. Having intermittent problems with wipers only working on fast. Sometimes it would work on all settings - other times only on fast. Anyway, while trying to sort out the window problem (will not go up or down on drivers side - suspect it is one of the wires) we noticed the relay was loose for the wiper relay, so pushed it home and now the wipers work perfectly every time. A simple and free fix - but one that was baffling for five weeks. Andy

Nice one, but how can spraying the belt have anything to do with a bearing on the back of an alternator. Maybe I am loosing the plot, but thanks for the reply anyway. Any idea is better than none. Mmm yeah - I meant to say - a worn pulley. Andy P.S. I must have my brain in gear.
-
An easy check for belt problems. along with idler pulley and alternator bearings is to spray the belts lightly with WD40. If the noise disappears then you have narrowed things down. Alternator bearings can sound like the engine is about to self destruct as the resonance can be amplified through the whole engine. However, if you spray the belts and it makes no difference then you have to investigate further. Another culprit can be the water pump - easy way to check is to put a little water wetter in the coolant and see if it decreases (it adds extra lubricant) if it does - time for new water pump. It is a long time (20 years) since I last heard a big end knock on a well maintained diesel. Peace Andy

Mk2 Tdi Galaxy Problems
andyfishing replied to biggalaxymike's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
First culprit has got to be the glowplugs - change them and get the injectors checked. I would suspect you might have a problem with the wiring to the glow plugs - carefully check it out. Andy -
Not Starting On All Cylinders

You should be able to get all the injectors pressure tested for free. I would suspect new nozzles -
Not Starting On All Cylinders
andyfishing replied to Jayton's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hiya, Right there could be several reasons for this on a diesel:- 1. Fuel Pump - unlikely 2. Blocked fuel return pipe - definently not. 3. Poor compression - possible - needs a rebuild if it is. 4. Glowplug not operating properly - bung in a new set - 90% likely 5. Diesel injectors - if bunging in new glowplugs does not work then get the injector spray pattern checked - if you have done over 80,000 miles get this done anyway. Getting new injector nozzles will dramatically improve an older diesel car. 6. It is unlikely to be wiring related as diesels use so little electrical trickery. Happy days Andy -
Hi all, Well got my Vag com software and cable today. I knew there was a problem as the ABS light was on and I am having problems with the drivers window not opening on the switch. Still sonds like a Lawnmower!!! Andy P.S. Sadly I feel a trip coming on to the Ford dealer -
If you think Ford dealers are epxensive - try Land Rover dealers - I ran Defenders and Discoveries for ten years and my bank balance is still recovering (I still miss my old Series III though). I had a problem in Taunton with my front drivers window on my Discovery staying down - i knew the metal window bar had probably corroded and finally given up the ghost. A 15 minute job at most to get the widnow into the upright position. I was on holiday, limited toolbox so went to the nearest Land Rover dealer. He agreed with me what the problem was , he offered to replace the part at a cost of

Hi all, Well my tale of woe continues. I decided to replace the pipe coming off the top fo the engine that goes back into the air pipe (I think it might be the EGR) I discovered that the air filter pipe where goes into the MAF sensor was broken. So repaired that and reconected all the pipework. I had to manhandle the air filter box to get access to everything.Discovered the large air pipe was not tightened onto the back of the engine with the large jubilee clip - sorted that. I did disslodge a strange pipe with wires on coming from an upright pipe - I think it might be for the Cruise Control - attached it to discover that the cruise control pipe is now sucking air through a perished pipe. Its like a mini compressor under the bonnet. Have I connected this pipe wrongly? Anyway put it all together (needed a transfusion after scraping knuckles). It now does not accelerate brilliantly and it is much nosier. I suspect they had disconnected air pipe as the MAF may be malfunctioning. So I have ordered some cleaner but it is much much noiser now. Any ideas? It is like a loud lawnmower. Ford Galaxy (Mark I) 2.8i 4x4 Auto GhiaX. R reg - 1997 - 7 seater I got this car as a swap on e-bay and it has been very neglected. I have driven Land Rovers for the last ten years so I am happy to wield a ratchet and spanner - even a lump hammer! Ideas please - I am determined to get this car running well. Jobs identified on getting the car from an e-bayer who lied and said it was fine:- Front and rear heated screens not working - fixed - new fuse Front drivers door light not working - new light fitted. Spark Plug Socket Size
andyfishing replied to andyfishing's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Someone must know this, please??? Andy -
Hi all, I bought the VW plug lead socket today - however, I was wondering what size socket do I need for the spark plugs and how deep does it need to be? I will need to buy one. Andy Galaxy - 2.8 AUTO 4x4 1997 R Reg (7 seater) - drives like a dream except for the clunky gearbox (soon to be fixed)
