  1. Yes. This is what the handbrake is for, according to the MOT. It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure). You're only supposed to do that sort of thing in emergancy situations - otherwise you are likely to "boil" your brake fluid and loose the brakes anyway!!! I know this from experience (old Audi 80 with sticking handbrake - VERY scary when the brakes fail completely :D )
  2. Have you looked on ebay? I noticed these wheel trims If you contact the seller direct they may end the auction early - or is it somebody on here?!?!
  3. I have that jet sound (more like a hoover on mine) which starts shortly after starting the engine and stops after travelling ~1 mile. I didn't think my Galaxy has an aux heater (2.0 petrol) - so what's that noise then?
  4. I am interested to find out what level of window tinting other members have fitted in their vehicles - I am considering getting mine done as I have no aircon. I have found this company - Tint Express - who make pre-cut tints to manufacturer window sizes. If anybody knows much about this, I'd be interested to hear more. NOTE: I am only planning on tinting the rear windows (ie. those behind driver) and I understand that these are not covered by light transmission legislation - I just want advice from those who have already done the tinting (some pictures might be nice too  )
  5. On Saturday morning I piled the wife and kids into the Galaxy. Tried starting and the engine just turned and turned (didn't fire at all). Thought it might be an immobiliser problem so I got out, locked the car, unlocked the car, got back in and tried again. After a fair amount turning it eventually started. Sunday morning, the car started no problem. We went out and, when we came back to the car 2 hours later, the same problem. My trick from Saturday didn't work so we eventually called the AA. The "very nice man" tried starting the car and it didn't work still (which I was glad of - I didn't fancy looking like an idiot!) but when he was about to test for power from the coil, the car decided to start! He advised me that the problem is likely to be a sticking relay and that it is definitely nothing to do with the immobiliser. Has anybody else had this sort of problem? and what have you done to fix it?
  6. If global closure is windows and/or sunroof closing when the key is held to the locked position, then I do indeed have this. It's a feature I missed from my 2.0 Cavalier (I wrote that off 8 years ago  ). I like the fact that the windows go down if you hold the key to the unlocked position too :) . Can the Ai606 handle that as standard? (it would be a nice idea to unlock and wind down the windows from a distance - particularly as I don't have aircon)
  7. Are you refering to a garden shed or is it a derogatory term for another car you own (surely not your Alhambra!?!). Does the Ai606 do the central locking as standard or do you have to buy add-ons for everything (including auto-closure)?
  8. I am looking at getting a cheap alarm for my Galaxy - more to add remote central locking than anything else. I have seen a number of cheap alarms on "that auction site" such as these: Alarm 1 Alarm 2 If anybody has fitted something like these or has any advice on such a system I would be interested to hear. I'd also be interested to know if the auto close feature will work with any such alarms.
  9. 1. Allan 2. Heald Green (Nr Manchester Airport) 3. N Reg (95) Galaxy 2.0 GLX 4. 7 weeks (but it's been with the garage for 4 of them!) 5. Yes - would prefer a Tdi next though 6. Spent ~
  10. No problem with self parking - they park as soon as you switch to full speed!!! Wash/wipe works fine. Is there a separate fuse for the high speed wipe or is it more likely switch/relay related?
  11. I've searched through the forum and can't find a definite answer. What is the maximum mounting depth for replacement speakers in a mk1 Galaxy? I have found some Kenwood speakers (KFC-1739IE) which are listed as custom fit for Ford, but it does not advise which models. The mounting depth given is 58.2mm, which is smaller than their standard equivalent (KFC-1789IE @ 64mm). If anybody can advise on the definite mounting depth or, better still, advise what they are like I would be most grateful.
  12. Despite all the problems I love the car and, surprisingly enough, so does my wife. My Dad used it over the weekend taking my sister and her husband out for the day - now he is looking to get one himself and so is my sister!!! I guess when you have a car that is as nice as the Galaxy when it's working you can overlook some of the problems when it's not working. PS I've just been out in it at lunch time in torrential rain/hail and found out that the wipers don't work on full speed  :o :( Any ideas anyone?
  13. Well I finally have my Galaxy back - it's been with the garage for the last 2 weeks! :D The reversing lights now work (switch as expected) :D The heater now works (thermostat was stuck open) :) The handbrake warning light now goes out (not sure what they have done for that!) :) Wheel trim has been replaced :o Horn button is back but won't stay on - any advice? ABS light is still not operating - however it does appear to be working. Apparently the rings on the driveshafts had corroded and these have been replaced. I think it may be that the light is still disconnected - can anybody tell me how to reconnect them? :o Sun visors are in a worse state than ever - drivers side mirror cover literally hangs off - I've had a quote for new replacements of
  14. Thanks for the opinions guys! I wasn't being serious - I was just curious to know what they looked like on a Galaxy (obviously nobody here has that little taste!!!). I am now looking at getting a set of cheap alloys - I found these on ebay: US Ford Probe Alloys Quite smart I think you'll agree and well cheap (less than a basic set of wheel trims) and I was about to snap them up (Stockport is local to me) when I thought I would check fitting. I found the Probe PCD is 5 x 114.3 whereas the Galaxy is 5 x 112 (AAARRRGGGHHH). Why can't Ford keep anything standard across their model ranges!!! If anybody knows where I can get some nice alloys for very little money that will fit the Galaxy, I'd love to know. Thanks.
  15. Has anybody seen these: 15" Chrome "SPINNING" Wheel Trims I've seen this type of thing on a Caddilac Escalade (obviously not trims on that!) and I was wondering if anybody has tried these on a Galaxy.
  16. Well here is the latest in my Galaxy saga!!! I took it back to the garage last Monday with the following list of jobs to do: 1. Fix ABS 2. Fix problem with brake warning light 3. Fix reversing lights 4. Fix front passenger do so that it opens from the inside 5. Fix/replace sunvisors so that that the mirror cover does not fall off/swing in your face! 6. Fix heating system (which never heats up!!!) I was advised that the car would be ready by Wednesday evening and was given the sheddiest car I have ever driven as a loaner (a P reg Proton - hardly a replacement for a Galaxy but never mind). I phoned on Wednesday afternoon to check that it would be ready for me (NOTE I live about 50 miles from the garage I bought it from). They told me it was still on the ramp and wouldn't be ready - I agreed to pick it up on Friday (as I couldn't make it on Thursday) I called again on Friday afternoon to check that everything is sorted and that the car will be ready for me that evening - they told me it was all sorted and ready for me but they were closing at 6pm - too early for me to get there. I got my Dad to pick it up for me on Saturday instead (my Dad is a mechanic and he lives ~3 miles from the garage). Here is the state of the car I got it back in: 1. ABS light still not working - ABS not working (checked in an empty car park on Saturday night!) 2. Brake warning light still permanently on 3. Reversing lights still do not work - they have since said that they ordered the switch and when they got it it was the wrong one. 4. :) Passenger door opens from inside - :( big globs of araldite on the door card!!! 5. No change to the sunvisors 6. No change to the heating In addition:  Missing horn button off steering wheel  Missing wheel trim from NSF wheel    140 extra (unaccounted for) miles on the clock and 1/3 tank of petrol used    My Dad is using his influence as he is a well respected mechanic on the Wirral (had his own business for ~40 years) and is getting all the major faults seen to by his prefered auto electrician and has got the garage owner to agree to pay the bill. The next installment of this saga will have to wait until next week as my Mum & Dad have just gone on holiday for a week. I'll keep you posted. Just a small teaser on the garage - they are based in Moreton on the Wirral. I'll name/shame them based on the final outcome - it's not looking too good so far though!!!
  17. Well I have been in touch with the garage and was ready to have a big argument when I told them what needed sorting out - the reply I got was So I am taking it back to them next Monday - they agreed to give me a courtesy car while they're fixing mine (I'm guessing it won't be a Galaxy but so long as it's a reasonable size I don't mind). I'll let you know the outcome and I'll name the garage when everything is sorted out.
  18. I didn't realise that - I've just looked on the VOSA site and can confirm that front doors must open from both outside and inside the vehicle. I knew that the ABS came under the MOT - I just need to know how they have turned the light off? Is there a simple way to get to the back of the dash (I can't see them stripping it down to do that) or is there a something uner the bonnet that could be disconnected? (if you have pictures that would help too!!!)
  19. I finally picked up my new (to me) Galaxy 2.0 GLX on Friday. I'm getting used to the size and it's beginning to feel like a car to drive (if a little underpowered). There are a few issues though and I've had a look through the forum for the answers and not found exactly what I'm looking for so here goes: 1. ABS - My Gal has the optional ABS and passenger airbag fitted. When I tested it last week, the ABS light and handbrake warning lights were both on all the time. The garage agreed to fix this as it needed an MOT. They have provided the MOT, but the handbrake warning light is still on and the ABS light does not come on at all. Can anybody advise what they are likely to have done (i've checked for fuses and can't find any missing). The garage I bought it from said that they have replaced the ABS sensors and the reason that the warning light is still on is because they need to bed in (I think they also believe I was born yesterday!!!) but they have agreed to sort out the problem if it does not resolve - I would prefer to go back with the ABS light reconnected though!!! 2. Reversing lights - These don't work at any time. I've checked the fuse and bulbs, and I've found that there is a 12v feed to the switch at the gearbox when the ignition is switched on. Is it worth shorting the connections to check if the lights come on or should I just bite the bullet and get a new switch? 3. Passenger door release - The handle to open the front passenger door doesn't work properly. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't (mostly it doesn't). As a result I am looking like a proper gentleman opening the door for my wife every time we stop. Is this likely to need a new handle or is it a common problem? Also, how many clips are used to attach the door card to the door? (I understand that it is best to have some spares to replace the ones I will inevitably break!!!) Any help with my questions would be most appreciated. Thanks.
  20. Oh if only it were that simple!!! Money (or lack of) was a major influence in my/our decision to purchase this model. I can only hope for a summer like the one we had last year (do you remember that day!!!). It does have a sunroof though (not much of a bonus, but better than nothing)
  21. Thanks for the quick reply - I was hoping for a more positive response but you can't have everything can you :P I am picking the Galaxy up on Friday (bought it at the weekend and it's getting a few jobs done before we pick it up). I guess I'll see what it's like without aircon in the meantime. Anybody got any opinion on how closely it will resemble a greenhouse in the summer? (PS - my Galaxy is a dark metallic blue (read "Heat Magnet"))
  22. Britax (http://www.britax.co.uk/index.htm) have a fit finder which tells you which of their seats will fit in which cars and in which position. The models it states can be used with the lap belt are Eclipse, Elite, Freeway, & Renaissance. At the moment, Halfords are advertising the Freeway for
  23. Due to my ever increasing family (2 year old, one year old, another on the way) and my major shortage of funds, I have just bought a 1995 Galaxy 2.0 GLX. The one glaring ommission from the spec on this vehicle is air conditioning. Does anybody know if it is possible/feasible to fit air conditioning (maybe a transplant from another Galaxy) and how much it would cost? If anybody out there has done this, I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.
