  1. Sounds like the wires that go to the tailgate through the rubber sheaf (on right hand side at the top ) have split and are touching. Pull the sheaf down from the tailgate and inspect the wires, I suspect you'll find they are quite worn.
  2. Hi again, Well just to add mystery into the mix, dropped it off at the garage this morning and they phoned me this afternoon to tell me they could find no fault! They did say something along the lines of 'there was a fault code from the MAF(?) which we reset but didn't think that was anything to do with it'. Told me to bring it back it if it happened again. They didn't charge me either. So, I took it took for a spin and sure enough no-probs even over 5000+ rpm, though I did notice that you can hear a whine kick in over 4000rpm. Can't really add anything else, but I'll post again if it starts playing up. I'm off on hols with it soon so that'll add a fair few hundred miles to it. btw, it's a Manual ;)
  3. cheers cyborg, I'll get it checked it out. Will post back when resolved... John
  4. Had a quick search but couldn't find anything obvious. Car drives fine in all circumstances except if I have to rev over 4000rpm. If I hit this magic number, or somewhere just over it, the car slows, as if its no longer making the wheels go round (technical B) explanation), ease off accelerator and all is fine again. The revs don't drop, just the power to the wheels. Can't reproduce when stationary as the car seems quite happy to rev that high. R-Reg 2.3 petrol 120000 on the clock. Thanks in advance John
  5. As per title really. Noticed that the dashboard lights do not come on unless the sidelights/headlights are switched on. When I switch the main lights off the dash lights go off. Now the fun starts: with the main lights off when I press the Brake pedal the dashboard lights come on and as does the foglight light. They go off again when I release the Brake pedal. Weird! All other lights seem to be functioning ok. Any ideas where to start looking? Thanks in Advance R Reg 2.3.
  6. Took it along today and they put in the radio and the code and it all works AND I was not charged for any of it!!! So that makes me very happy. The Radio had a L------ serial no. which is certainly not what I was expecting. Would this perhaps have a bearing on why the Ebay Radio (that was an M-----) did not work? Thanks again all!
  7. cheers Beyond, As part of my 'goose chase' I managed to get hold of the serial code decoder software but Fraud have my radio. Also of course Fraud were telling me that my radio was in some way suspect as the code they had did not work. Prehaps I should get the serial from the radio and check it with the decoder and see if it matches the code they now have.
  8. No they didn't, and the fact that it came back still broken is the bit that hacked me off (and sent me off on my wild goose chase). If they had fixed then at least I'd have taken it on the chin...
  9. Thanks for your help everyone, things have moved on a bit: This is the tale of what happened: 1. Ford replaced the battery and in doing so cut the power to the radio. They tried the code on their system but it did not work 2. Phoned me to tell me what they had done and did I have the code? I did not have the code (never have) so they told me they would sent it off to get the code 'reset' 3. Two weeks later they phoned to tell me the radio had come back (with a charge of
  10. So far... 1. Attached all three connectors to back of radio and pressed POWER nothing 2. Tried pressing SELECT then POWER and vice versa nothing 3. Later tried with just the power(?) connector attached and left it for an hour before trying 1 and 2 again nothing Is there any other way I can test the radio (maybe the pin-outs) or connector plug to see if it's alive? Is there a fuse/relay to check on the car itself? Previous owner swears the radio was working before it was posted. Thanks in advance.
  11. Long story but just bought a 2007 radio cassette to replace the one which the garage is 'fixing' (can't find code) When I attach the new radio I get no power on display or anything that looks like its powering up. All other lights/devices on the Gal seem to work fine so I assume its not a fuse Original radio was a 2007R and this one is just a 2007 but the connectors all seem identical. Is this just a duff radio? ps. dreaded 97/98 Gal with manual that says the fuses are in one place whilst the fuse panel says in another.
  12. Yes I wondered this... unfortunately whatever I do with turning the key in the barrel makes no difference: I have a 97/8 Galaxy with a manual that I'm fairly certain does not match the car ^_^ (fuse descriptions don't match, etc) Can anyone post the procedure for returning the backdoor to central locking? So the scenarion I have is this: If I use remote all locks open EXCEPT back door. If all doors are centrally locked and I turn key in rear door I can hear all other locks 'open' and the lights flash. I can then open all doors. If I turn key in back door again all locks close. By virtue of the fact I can turn the key in the back door and lock/unlock all other doors does that mean I have connected ALL the wires? confused
  13. As per title. A while back I had to reconnect some of the wires in the sheath between the top right of the car and the boot as the rear windscreen wiper was causing the central locking to activate! I fixed this. A few days ago the back door started to no longer open unless I used the key, so today I had a look at the wires again. Sure enough two wires had split. I had to solder these back together as I didn't have any crimps. All back to normal... BUT the back door still won't open. IIRC the cables I rejoined were blue/black and brown/grey. Have I missed a trick?
  14. Sorted! (for now). But blimey what a mess. In the four or so years, since I fixed the brake light wire, loads of wires have split (opened up). Two were touching, which must have been the CL and Windscreen wiper. Only really had the guts to use a judicious amount of insulating tape to make sure nothing touched. Will have to revisit at some point...
  15. cheers Andrew I had a sneaking suspicion it may be tailgate related as I had to fix the brakelight wire their some years back. I'll have a look sharpish as I don't want any big bills...
  16. Had a quick search and couldn't find anything... As per thread title. When I activate the Rear wiper, the central locking kicks in and locks all the doors! Just started happening recently, well at least if it hasn't, it doesn't seem to be a particularly useful feature ;) Anyone any thoughts? Late 97 Gal 2.3 Ghia
  17. Definitely sounds like the little plastic L that keeps the cassette in has snapped. Happened to mine twice now!! Its pretty easy to fix, and most likely the bit of plastic thats broken will still be inside the unit. Remove the unit and give it a shake, you should hear a timy bit rattling round inside. Its a little L piece with a screw in one end. The screw end will still be attached to the player so its straightforward to see where it needs to go. I use epoxy to glue it back in place and it seems to last about two years (then it breaks again!!!) I could have taken photos as I just fixed it again this Monday...
  18. Mines been doing it for the last five and half years!
  19. cheers for trying :( I think I know the place you mean. I may call in on the off chance. Got home tonight and checked the car and it looks as though the aircon is still working!! The missus was either telling porkies or I have a sneaking suspiscion that the V belt( is that its name?) is loose though I'm probably wrong. The car needs to go in for a service in the next week or two anyway.
  20. Just checked my manual and there is no mention of taking the tailgate out of the loop (that I can find!). I think this relates to me having a 97 spec manual and a 98 spec Galaxy. Does anyone have the sequence? thanks in advance John
  21. Hmmm, You've both got me thinking. If I manually turn the key in the tailgate the lights flash and the other door locks open/close accordingly. Is there a way that the tailgate can be 'taken out' of the automatic unlocking/locking cycle? Or Is there a fuse involved somewhere  (see my post about courtesy lights)? Or is there a 'trigger' wire?
  22. When I unlock my car with the remote all the doors unlock automatically except the Tail door, I have to open this one with the key. I'm pretty certain this is due to the locking wires having frayed in the rubber sleeve at the top between the taildoor and the car itself. Question is: Does the wire run on the left or right hand sleeve as you look into the car from the tailgate? And how hard do I have to pull to detach the sleeve, I've done it once before but can't remember the procedure.
  23. Yep, its 53. It looks as though I have a Aug 97+ spec Galaxy with a 97 Handbook, which seems to be for an earlier model! Thanks for your help guys!
  24. Still stumped. Here (should be) a pic of the diagram of the fuse box. Can anyone tell me which fuse is for the interior lights? cheers
