  1. I have a MK2. I get around 40MPG pottering about, 50MPG on the motorway if you take it easy. Towing the caravan @ 60MPH drops it down to 26MPG and the oil temp moves up from it's normal 90DegC to 120DegC.
  2. What's all this about? My horn button is the whole of the centre of the steering wheel, i.e. the whole air bag cover??? Swap the Galaxy one for an Alhambra/Sharan one instead of the whole car!
  3. I have a Garmin Street Pilot III Deluxe - 3 years old now - can't fault it. I've used it abroad too, to take me straight to the front door of the Hotel in France (near Paris) - no problems.
  4. Full step by step photos are here
  5. My "Check disc pads" warning has been coming on for a couple of weeks, so today I set about changing the front pads (the rear were replaced last June). I checked the outside pads last week, around 10mm remains. I took off the wheels, and armed with instructions from this forum set about the job. The inner pads have around 8mm left, so, since it looks like a big job removing the calipers, and it's cold, and I don't like the cold, I put the wheels back on to do it another day. So, points to note from my little fiddle... 1. The front nearside inner pad is the only side wired with a sensor. 2. When do the sensors show "check pads"? Down to 8mm? 3. Does the whole caliper have to come off, it appears so from the instructions (remove the two bolts) 4. I took the easy way out and left it for another day mainly because I don't like messing with the ABS, does this come off with, and stay with, the caliper? 5. I know from the instructions not to push the caliper back in as not to damage the ABS without undoing the bleed nipple, is this the one at the front of the caliper facing the front of the car on the inside? 6. Is this a total failure?... Mine's had 3 compressors, 1 evaporator and 1 condenser, 5 recharges, all under warranty :D, the fault was eventually found as a leak in the evaporator which was the last thing replaced. They also overcharged the gas on one occasion, causing the compressor to almost stall the engine on idle due to overpressure each time it engaged the clutch. I had to switch to "econony" to turn it off so it didn't get damaged and take ages explaining what was happening before they agreed. A year after it was finally fixed, on a bright sunny day as the sun was shining through the front grill, I noticed what a botch up they had done with the condenser radiator. We are talking top price main dealer here. In order to replace the condenser radiator, they appear to have used a hammer and chisel to hack out gaps in the vertical struts so the lugs of the radiator would fit in/out so they didn't have to remove the struts. AND, one of the sides isn't even bolted on. They seem to be made out of a composite fibre material and it's all frayed where they hacked at it. I complained at the next service and got them to look at it. When I went to collect it, they said the service manager was on holiday, but a mechanic has had a look at it and it is "safe". Gee whiz. I'll post a photo when I get around to it, but if you have had your condenser radiator replaced, I suggest you have a look at the mounting lugs.
  7. The wonderful TDi diesel, is there less room around the petrol version? http://img160.exs.cx/img160/2165/pict00348bj.jpg Now let's do the offside headlamp... http://img160.exs.cx/img160/5469/pict00352od.jpg Dust cover is removed by unscrewing two plastic "wingscrews". http://img160.exs.cx/img160/2218/pict00367qv.jpg The space on this side is a bit more restricted. http://img160.exs.cx/img160/3028/pict00371qw.jpg The headlamp rear cover removed, lift off the washer filler cap to make removal easier. http://img160.exs.cx/img160/3015/pict00384tg.jpg Wayhey! All done! http://img160.exs.cx/img160/7803/pict00407zi.jpg Job finished in around 25 minutes. http://img160.exs.cx/img160/6001/pict00429pd.jpg Hope this helps anyone wondering if they should do it themselves or let the stealers do it. Handbook states - dealer replacement - ahh!
  8. Yet another fault with my Alhambra - my headlamp bulb failed on the way home. I read this post recently, so after a quick re-read of the post to confirm it was a simple job, I nipped to Halfords and got two "Super brilliance" Xenon bulbs (two for the price of one offer  ) for
  9. It sounds like the pads are worn down to the metal to me. I heard the same noise on my wife's car on Friday - I only heard the grating noise when almost stopped. I replaced them on them Saturday  .
  10. Didn't get a chance this weekend. I drove my wife's Saxo of Friday (02 reg, 19,000 miles) and heard a metallic grating noise on braking. I discovered that the front pads were down to zero, metal to metal. She said she told me last Sunday??? I have it serviced at the stealers - why didn't they point out they needed changing  . Anyway, had lot's of trouble fitting them, since the ones in the box from Halfords wouldn't make up two pairs. I took them back, spent 30 minutes trying to convince them they were wrong. Eventually, they got another box and a customer who happened to be next to me who is a mechanic showed them that they were wrong. I took the new set home and they fit first time. Anyway, that destroyed my Saturday, and Sunday was Mothers Day
  11. My VAG-COM has arrived. I'll give the manual a good read and checkout my 'Aftermarket Sony radio' to see if it needs a wire disconnecting, then when I'm confident I'll plug it in to try to find what's gone wrong with my heater. I've had problems since it was at the stealers a few weeks ago, and from what I've read, the VAG-COM will tell me if they have been messing, because if they altered any device settings, then their offical computer will have left its serial number in the device change readings. A full report will appear in this thread, both of the diag readings and when I get the glowpug (2-3 weeks delivery, special order) how I got on changing it.
  12. What is a TIS CD? Mine's a TDi
  13. I just ordered a glowplug for
  14. When I have done an emergency stop, it beeps at me but the engine dosn't stop.
  15. I copied it from an earlier post, which said was rated at 8V, 8A
  16. Did it look like this? http://img138.exs.cx/img138/5459/dsc022880xf.jpg
  17. Paul Not been VAG-COMed yet. I think you are right, but I don't want them messing with it any more.
  18. "Check brake pads" has started to come on every 2 or 3 runs. The rear ones were new last June, and the front have 10mm left. Is this a "timed" warning, or is it the sensors in the pads? There is lot's of salt on the roads, so maybe it's that bridging the pad sensors?
  19. Well, mine's given up the ghost, doesn't even try to start now.
  20. Mike I'm free tomorrow, please PM me. Ivor (My engine only reached 52 Deg C this morning, if it was not for the heated seats I'd freeze! Gotta get this sorted. I'm also loosing around 5-6 MPG coz the engine is running cold. I usually tease 39-43 MPG on the morning run, now I'm only getting 35ish)
  21. Jeff It starts every time I start the car engine, by which I mean that I can hear the jet engine blower start. Most times it then stops after 30 seconds, but every 4th /5th go (starting the car) it runs with lots of grey smoke. I suspect that the glowplug isn't getting hot enough so it's not burning the fuel, just making it smoke. Either that or the metering pump is pumping too much diesel. I'll know if it's the glowplug when I take it out, hopefully this weekend, weather permitting. USB is the one I'm going for if I don't fix the glowplug,
  22. I just replaced all four of my SP Sport 2020s for
