Central Locking/remote Access Etc
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Is there a broken wire (or 2 or 3) in the loom between driver's door and A-pillar? -
Hello James - have a search; there are a few causes - could just be a connector fallen off the back of the instrument panel (not easy to get to, unfortunately) or could need a complete new instrument display panel. Are you covered by warranty?

Cruise Control
Ivor_E_Tower replied to chromedome's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Last time this came up, we had several replies on whose light worked and whose didn't. I've driven at least 3 Galaxys with cruise fitted that worked (including my own one) and on none of them did the light work. -

Do I Need To Own An Oil Well!
Ivor_E_Tower replied to brethy's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
I'll tell you one thing - buying a smaller car for day-to-day use as well as having a Galaxy will cost you much more than just having the Galaxy and buying a bit more fuel for it each week! Savings here will be outweighed by extra road fund licence, insurance, MOT, servicing...... Autos are better for towing than manuals but check if a gearbox oil cooler needs to be added to the transmission system. Haldex and, for that matter, any 4-wheel drive system should not be affected by towing - towing does not alter the relative speed difference between front and rear wheels of the towcar. I've not towed but from what I've read the Galaxy makes an excellent towcar irrespective of engine due to frontal area (it's already moved most of the air out of the way so the caravan gets a good run through the air), high rear and long wheelbase with little rear overhang, so less "lever" effect on rear wheels via the drawbar. Take it easy and have fun  -

Can't Open Drivers Door !
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If the handle doesn't look right, either the mechanism has come apart inside the door, or someone has tried to break into it. Door card removal has been covered on the site before, as has the bit on how to re-attach the linkage if it has come off inside the door. Try a search if you have time, soory I'm too busy at present to do this; had a day off yesterday to throw some new Mondeos around a handling circuit  and am now catching up.... -
My door mirrors are glass with silvery reflective coating. Their housings are body-coloured though... B) B) :) :)

The aux heater has a mind of its own - drove up to Prodrive for my "fun day" driving Mondeos today, stopped at Warwick Services after over 90 miles of driving. When I came to leave after max of 15 minutes at rest, the aux heater kicked in for just a few minutes until I left the service area. I can tell you that if the ST220's TDCI engine is fitted to the next Galaxy, we are in for a real treat. :) B) Mr Ford, are you listening?..... Edited 13-10-2004: The cars may have been badged ST220 like the petrol engined ones, but IIRC the TDCI gives around 155 PS from 2.2 litres but 400Nm of torque on over-boost (haven't converted that to pound-feet yet); it has been significantly re-worked from the 2.0 litre TDCI and, yes, I am aware that there have been some reliability woes with that engine. Hopefully the 2.2 litre version will have been "de-bugged". The Ford rep said that they are now working on third-generation common-rail units.

Hissing Brake Pedal & Starter Motor "noise"
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Hissing when brake pedal pressed usually indicates problem with brake servo. Best to get it investigated ASAP. Other noise is probably starter sticking, if it's been OK for a few years then probably nothing to worry about. (keep fingers crossed...) -
Headlamp Masking Mk2 Galaxy
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Standing in front of the Gal, looking back towards the lights, you need to mask an area to the left and below the centreline of each dipped beam headlamp bulb, about one inch square should do the trick. The templates show additional area around the main beam lamp which is not strictly necessary. Dipped beams are outboard of main beams (ie closer to the side and indicator bulbs). HTH -
Headlamp Masking Mk2 Galaxy
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
(1) They are on the famed TIS CD (2) Your friendly Ford dealer (apologies for sarcasm) may supply you with a copy of the masking patterns from the TIS CD (3) Buy a set of beam benders from eg Halfords; they come with a full set of instructions. I got mine last week and will be fitting them in about 10 days' time (4) If you have the Xenon headlamp option I don't think you need them; there is a hidden lever somewhere that alters the beam pattern for driving on the other side of the road. HTH Ivor -
1 month before the warranty expires, get it re-gassed with the old gas/oil being weighed, so you know how much it lost. If it's significant go to dealer and register a fault within the warranty period. If it's OK, then you may have spend around

Reverse Battery Problem.
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If you mean he connected the smaller battery the wrong way round on the Gal, there is probably some damage to the electronics. Maybe some diodes gone in the alternator, maybe worse :o A few years ago my dad went to jump-start his old car and connected the leads the wrong way round from by brother's car. Fortunately brother's car was OK, but this was just before they went on holiday and whilst they were away, my job was to source a new alternator for dad's car. Diodes had blown and red "ignition" light was on all the time that the ignition was off, and the battery was draining rapidly - one battery lead had to be taken off every time the car was stopped until I fitted the replacement alternator. -
Help - Falsified Service Book

Help - Falsified Service Book

Rusty - haven't seen any John Bull stamping kits but did recently buy one from an office stationers for repeat stamping of Job Cards etc at work. The previous kit got "borrowed" by the wife who made up namestamps for the kids to stamp all their schoolbooks etc, and now I'm not allowed to touch them :o -
Watre In The Passengers Foot Well
Ivor_E_Tower replied to delboyt's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
As someone I used to work with once said: If a bit falls off your car and it still works OK, then it wasn't needed so don't worry that it's dropped off! -
I saw G41AXY was for sale some months ago, then disappeared off the number plate "retailers" sites. IIRC the price at the time was around

My parents' 1974 Volvo had discs all round with separate drums for the handbrake and in 30 years we never had a problem with the handbrake sticking or freezing. Irrespective of what rear brakes you have, it is always sensible to leave the car in gear when you park. I was also taught to park on hills with the wheels pointing so that should the car move, it would roll into the kerb.

I wish I could afford a non-dating late for my car too - for that reason, that people don't know how old it is. My parents have a very nice number plate that they got in the 1960's on a used car they bought, 2 pairs of double numbers then 2 letters (something like 2211 AM but this is not their plate). They thought the seller was going to keep it, but it was allocated as a replacement number for the "original" that the previous owner transferred, which had 999 as the numerical part of a three number and three letter plate.

Electric Window And Sunroof

First check the wiring loom between door and "A"-post for breaks in one or more wires. -
Have you tried asking round the local private hire companies and taxi ranks?

Galaxy 115tdi Engine Rattle
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
First thought - what didn't they put back properly? Check that engine undertray is fitted correctly, and that engine is not moving on its mountings. Have you opened the bonnet and had a good look around, trying to touch "things" to make sure that all is secure? -
It's an ELK test, and you are supposed to go EEK when trying it out! :(
