Right for all you lot having probs with the heater, I'd advise either a diagnostic to pinpoint - or take it out and test the glowplug!! I have spoken to the German manufacturers of the units who also recon them, they advise that a high percentage are returned with a single fault... Ie the glow plug..

Here's the little bugger - excuse the dirty hands!

It takes all of 10 mins to remove the booster heater, and you DO NOT have to remove the coolant pipes, as you can strip it on the floor whilst they are still attached.. Just disconnect the wiring plug and pull of the fuel hose! Anyone who tells you otherwise (prob Frauds) is full of B/S - I've done it twice now, first to confirm the glow plug was dead, (it was) and 2nd to replace it with the (according to Fraud) "unavailable as a seperate part, you'll be needing a complete unit" replacement.. Mine now works like a treat!

Here's the heater on the floor still attached to the car:

And here's where it lives!

They CAN be bought from:

Speak to Lloyd Parchment - mention my name (Mike Fenlon) and the forum!!

The original Beru (OEM) part no is 0 100 226 228 but it has now been superceeded, although Lloyd is aware of the new part No.

It is not a stock item, and has to be ordered from Germany, but it is the GENUINE OEM part. Cost is......

One question that still seems to be without an answer : Is there a way of getting VAG.COM to communicate with the aux heater (Mark 1 model ) . Failing this , is it possible to reset the the ECU fault log within the heater using other means and I don't count going to main dealer or Eberspacher...

I am pretty sure that that VagCom does not communicate with MK1 booster heaters ( at least it doesn't on my 1998 model, although it could be knackered ).

Don't think that there is an ECU fault log to reset !

Just used Vag Com to check Aux heater which is U/S, and got a "Glow plug open circuit Q9" fault.

Is this a definate glowplug change job. (1st time I've used Vag com)?

If so, are the part no.s for the OEM part correct for a 2000 mk2 galaxy PDI115?

Thanks

Did the glowplug over the weekend (Thanks for the part Martin), started up and within a minute or so got the good old whine from under the car - haven't heard it in years. The only bolt sheared was the one holding the little exhaust to the bracket, not too bad.

The others were stubborn though. The problem is steel to alloy corrosion, more that just tightness, so a well placed wack on top of the torx driver with a hammer did the trick. I would strongly recommend using the socket driver type torx keys and not the allen key shape. The long 65mm long screw holding the side housing on was a pig, but finally came out by tapping down on the torx driver while turning the shaft with a spanner. Lots of Copperslip on rebuild. Took a couple of hours, but had the potential to take a lot longer if the bolts started shearing.

The heater makes a big difference if the car is started from cold and then driven in traffic, but hardly any at all on most of my journeys to work where the car is driven on a fast A road within a few minutes of start up, and put under load (gradually of course).

The MK1 heater is a 'dumb unit' that does not communicate with the OBD II port.

If it is not working then you need to bridge the temperature sensor under the bonnet.

Open the heater up and check the fan moves, it will do this when you start the car, have an assistant start the car and look. If it is not moving then the motor could be faulty. Check for voltage at the connector.

If that is fine then use a multi-meter to check and see if the glow plug is open circuit. If it is it is knackered, change it.

If not then remove it and using some fly leads momentarily connect it to the battery. If the tip got hot then it is fine, if not then connect again but for a second, does it get hot? If not it is knackered.

If it does get hot, put it back and check for 8v at the connector.

Find the metering pump, it is on a fuel line under the car and has a connector on it. The connections can corrode, check they are clean and you get a pulsing 12v when the engine is running. If your getting pulses then put the connector back on and start the car, does the heater start? If not then the metering pump could be the fault.

No pulses and your going to have troubleshoot the connector to the unit, if your getting pulses from there then you need to check the wiring to the metering pump.

Finally if all this fails, is the unit getting the required signals from the car to start?

When I find my circuit diagram I will post up the connector pin-outs.

I have the 'white smoke' scenario on our Galaxy tdi (2001). Having read this thread I'm still a little confused on the advice, could someone please say if the problem needs fixing (taken into a garage?). We have the jet engine noise so assume that glow plug is working? Can aux heater simply be disconnected to solve problem? Thanks. Edited by paj

OK I've read all the posts on the Aux Heater - Informative to say the least all 20 pages !!!!

My problem seems to be as follows :

loads of grey smoke after a couple of minutes from starting engine, turbine noise too, exhaust on aux heater not getting hot.....

From the above I assume it's the glow plug that is getting hot enough to VAPORISE the fuel but not hot enough to IGNITE it

Am I more or less correct in my assumptions that a new glow plud should correct the problem ?? thanks all in anticipation of your reply !!

Pretty much the same with me too. I never realised this was such a commom problem !

A bit worrying seeing all the smoke at first, but relieved, having read this short thread :( that it's nothing engine related.

Hi all. Great work on this topic. I have an 03 Alhambra 115PD & sods law, the aux heater packed up the moment it turned really cold. The thing is totally silent, so I guess the ECU has locked it out, hopefully due to flameout or faulty glow plug. I'm off the my local VAG indy tomorrow as he has VAG Com, so will hopefully diagnose the problem for me.

After spending far too long in work time reading through all the posts here, one thing I noticed that hadn't been mentioned was the location of the bloody fuse! SEAT kindly don't refer to it in the handbook, so I have no idea where it is, or indeed if it's blown.

Anyone help on that front?

Appart from that, keep up the good work guys! :16:

You're right there Mum! ...... From my experience of owning a Galaxy and lucky enough to have a serviceable aux heater .... It shouldn't smoke! It never failed to start up and even on the coldest mornings very little steam came from the exhaust. Lucky I guess.

Just to update. Went to my Indy earlier today & within 30 seconds he pulled up a list of 5 errors, all the same fault saying, open circuit glow plug. Phoned 2 VW dealers & my local SEAT one, none had heard of the booster heater, let alone the glow plug for it. Luckily I was armed with the part No. which surprised them when it came up on the screen, but they all wanted

It has indeed been succeeded, for one that runs hotter!
