Have To Wait Before Opening The Boot?

Maybe this is the way it's meant to be but I don't remember it from the bulk of my 5 years ownership.

 

I have a 97 mk1 Alhambra and recently (as far as I can tell) I've had to wait 20-30 seconds between shutting the ignition off and being able to open the boot. After this time the servo will do it's little zit-zut noise and everything is normal. The rear window heater stopped recently so I spent a happy afternoon splicing ultra-flexible cable into all the the loom wires at the obvious place but the 20-30 sec delay remains.

 

So, is this normal and have I just suddenly become really fast at getting from the drivers seat to the boot, or is there a subtle fault somewhere?

Sorry I cannot help with the matter, but you would normaly pay a lot of money for a security thing like that, at least no one can open the boot when you first pull up and rob you !

this a standard feature on the Mk1 :( once the enine is running and the drivers door shut the rear hatch auto locks :( for the reason of security as you suggest! the only way now to open the rear hatch is to either use a key in the lock or by popping the drivers door open

Once ignition is off...there is around a 30 sec delay before you can open the boot...as 3.5 says...when the car is running the only way to open the boot is by opening the drivers door or by key.

I wonder if it's related to the demise of the drivers door switch then. That's been u/s for a while now so maybe the car doesn't know I've got out!

if you short out the contacts on the drivers door switch does it revert to as it was before?

I've swapped the switches from the driver and passenger sides so I'll know as soon as I get back from taking the kids to the beach.

I thought that (on the mk2 at least) the passenger door had the same effect as the drivers door (not that will invalidate your test)

Our MK1 Galaxy does this. We have found a quick way round it (and a way of opening the tailgate with the engine still running ) is to lock and unlock the doors using the interior door release handle on the front doors whilst your are still in the car with the doors shut.

 

Try that and let me know how you get on.

With the broken switch on the passenger side the tailgate now works as it always did before. I'll add that one to my extremely long list of bizarre Shalaxy faults. Now to get another switch from somewhere.
