hi can someone clarify, when the engine has been on a run and is hot, are the glowplugs used on a restart say after 5-10 mins ? im gett ing very long cranking over when hot engine on the tdi 110 98 year, no fans stay on runing so have ruled out the switch. or could it be that, sometimes from cold it fire up sometime from cold it takes a long time to fire , the glowplug light still works hot or cold, ,anyone any ideas ? thanks

I am not sure if yours uses the glow plugs on a 5min restart, I would say they don't, but the only way to check glow plugs, is to take them out, and connect them directly across the battery(one at a time) and they should glow bright red (don't hold them with your hand, use a pair of pliers) and if they don't glow they are duff.

The warning light will work even if you have a duff plug.

There is a temperature profile during which the plugs will glow, howevere the intelligent ignition system continues to use the glow plugs after the engine has started to aid complete ignition of the fuel. It is possible that the glowplugs are not warming correctly under the warm start condition eg they dont glow at all on the reduced voltage supplied during warm start mode so they may need replacing.

Alternatively have you checked your fuel for air or the lift pump diaphram as fuel running back to the tank would also cause long crank start symptoms.

Try parking facing down a hill and see if it the same.

yes its same downhill or uphill , which is the lift pump diagphramg if i can spell it ! sometimes when cold it starts straight up or sometimes it cranks for a long time when cold,

its the starter causinf griesf ive just cured mine, to check, on front of engine behind pump where the water hose connects to block locate the engie temp sender it has 4 wires going into it, now then unplug the connector and try to start if its nearly instant your starter is cranking to low.

2 cures and both cheap

1 vagom change map to auto or 4-motion

2 use a relay and 4.7k resistor on pin 3 to fool ecu its cold but not for the glows it tells the ecu to inject diesel at much lower crank speed.

come back when the test is done
