aww..your welcome hun... good fun init

i would of thought, that connecting the motor to the linkage, then turning the ignition key so all electricks come on but not to start car, and the linkage will position to park position automatically.

you just have to mark on the screen somehow whereabouts the arms lay before you take the whole shebang off.

Anyway, glad this thread gave you the courage and confidence to do what you needed to, and well done on not breaking anything. :angry2:

I think MO4 should now be MO5 after reading this!! It's like another child that has just grown into a monster!!

I don't even know why I started reading it???!!! :D

Anyway, if I ever need it, I now know all of the pitfalls of wiper linkages!

Now then back to searching for other failure points!

Hi newbie here, I've followed the thread as I have exactly the same issue, does anyone know if the pics are still valid as when I click on one it tells me I dont have permission although I'm logged on ??

Help appreciated.

if you click options on the top right of the topic, and download the topic, you will be able to see the pics, otherwise, its make a couple more posts then you will be able to see em. :D

good luck, and remember, dont whack it with a hammer, treat it gently, loads of wd40, a vice maybe... and know lots of swear words but make sure no kids around when you use em all

I had to do mine again today. It took 4 hours start to finish, and my back is done in....

One very good tip for knocking the spindles out, it to put the nut back onto the spinsdle, and instead of hitting it with a copper hammer, which not a lot of people have, and can be expensive and useless for most other things, I use a very old cricket bat. Its recked now like, but it is such soft wood, that it compresses extremely well, and does the job superbly.

I had one mishap, I dropped the washer off the wiper into the land of never.

I have just had to tackle this job myself. Wipers would stop, pause, advance a few more inches, stop, pause, few more inches...etc,etc.. I lifted the blades from the screen which took enough drag off the motor to allow it to park. This saved the motor burning out at least.

Next job was to remove the wiper arms. (

I have had this problem for a while now, and managed to keep out of the rain....But MOT round the corner..so they need to work...

I removed the wiper arms from spindles, and have removed the 3 bolts holding wiper mech to body, unplugged motor and unclipped cable catch... Its all floating loose, I just can't remove it from the bloody car....wiggling it about does not help..... anybody have a realistic idea of how to remove it, without ripping pipes, and damaging the car????

Well it was a lovely day today - not a lot happening so decided to do the linkage as my nearside wiper was all but stopped.

I was fed up with having to operate the wiper control with "one tap" when it was nearly impossible to see through the rain but this was the only way to guarantee a complete cycle of the wipers.

Anyhow job completed in about three hours.

Must

Mark the wipers in original position on the screen.

Remove the air filter.

Remove the expansion bottle and drop it lower into the engine bay.

Take a photo before you try and get the spindles out of the whole mechanism saves having to work out correct operation later.

Problems

Spindles not moving at all and stuck solid.

Ball joint (chrome dome - Black Plastic top) hard to pop out.

Solutions I found worked

Heat up the casing around the spindles using a blow torch - worked a treat (remove rubber grommets that hold the mounting bolts first)

After couple of minutes of heat a couple of good whacks with the persuader and both spindles were on the move.

Two large screwdrivers used to pop the ball joints using a scissoring motion.

All back together now and also replaced the pollen filter at the same time.

What a fantastic improvement! Can

Well, over Christmas, the wipers on my Alhambra started to slow down such that they were slow even on high speed. When I looked at the wiper frame, it was flexing when the wipers were on, indicating that the spindles were siezing - the driver's side was the worst.

What I did was as follows:

1) Remove the wiper arms using a 16mm socket.

2) Remove the circlip and washer from the top of each spindle.

3) Start the engine and switch the wipers on to high speed.

4) Squirt WD40 onto the spindles.

5) Screw the wiper arm nuts back on a few turns.

6) Press down on the nuts with a 16mm socket - with WD40 and firm pressure the spindles should start to move down.

7) You will then notice that as the taper moves down into the frame, it forms a sort of reservoir for the WD40.

8) As the lower end of the spindle becomes visible, sqirt some WD 40 onto it.

9) Using a pair of pliers on the nut, pull the spindle back up again.

10) Once it starts to become easier to slide the spindles up and down, start to use engine oil instead of WD40 - this is a much better lubricant than WD40. You will also notice that the frame will have stopped flexing by this time.

11) Eventually, the spindles will start to fall under their own weight.

12) Turn off the wipers and the engine.

13) Replace the washers and circlips.

14) Wipe away all excess oil and dirt.

15) Replace wiper arms, adjust and tighten nuts to 34Nm.

Job done, and no need to remove the whole wiper unit.

Hope this helps others with similar problems.

Hey there all.

I must have got things a bit wrong.....

I had my wipers stick tonight so I stripped the mechanism out, worked the siezed spindle out of the casing using a little heat, release agent and a little brute force and ignorance.

I cleaned out the casing of old grease and corrosion, cleand as best I could the pitted and partially chrome-less shaft, re-assembled using a molybdenum based assembly grease (designed for bearing/bushes etc). I then fitted the whole lot back in place, all without loosing or breaking anything. I then tested it.

All worked better than I remember them ever working, all done in 2.5 hrs and whilst watching TV.

I then decided to check this forum for any info and came accross this thread -------

Would have thought I'd have learnt by now - check here first - much easier.

Great thread, loads of useful ideas, and it must be a good conteder against the 'booster heater' for length :o

Enjoy

Right, can I check which model this works with? We've recently moved abroad and since we got here my 2005 Galaxy is being a nightmare! First the driveshaft goes, now I went to clean the dust off my windscreen and my wipers are not working, just moving an inch, stopping, moving a bit more...they were fine last time I used them.

I thought it might be the dust/sea air here and came across this thread, really can't afford to pay more money to the garage so want to try myself and inspired my Mumof4! Having seen the photos though feeling a little scared...

Looked online for a Haynes manual and they don't seem to have one for my model, so does this thread apply to a 2005 model or is it the previous model?

Thanks

Hi there

Yes those instructions are good for all models, also other members have drilled into the spindle housings and pumped lubricant in that way.

I personally prefer to take the whole motor and linkage off and strip it down, you can clean then off the spindles which get badly corroded and re-grease linkages and bushes, also good opportunity to change pollen filter as its a bugger to do otherwise

OOOh what a lovely day for getting your linkages in hand and giving them a giant smash with a copper hammer :16: :16: .

Job done. 2 hours and 35 minutes :o :o .

Thanks for the instructions guys, great work and pretty easy to follow.

I think i read this thread when it first started, hoping that I would never need to be doing the job myself ( wishful thinking).

It was kinda funny back then :o. Not so funny when you have to get everything stripped and greased in the cold though :o .

Thanks for your input on the subject, cant believe you have another galaxy !! .. :16: :o.

A big thank you to Mumof4/Maz for starting this thread and to all that helped with this problem. The wipers on my 53 plate galaxy decided to stop working and with the help of this tread I stripped it all out, cleaned, hammered, heated and greased before re-fitting, all working great, took about 2 hrs, I stripped the attery out and the plastic divered that the expansion tank bolts to, made life easier for me.

Then as i had all the tools out, i then tackled our 1999 Golf Gti which had developed the same problem another 2hrs and all working.

Thanks again to everyone
