tim-spam Posted October 26, 2005 Report Posted October 26, 2005 To change a cam chain, you can indeed do it by splitting the old chain and drawing the new one in with the old one. However, by the time the chain needs changing (about 200,000 miles on my old 190D, although it had been noisy for a while), the tensioner slipper and hydraulic tensioner will almost certainly need changing as well - this was a cylinder head off job. Guest blatters Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 Just when you thought it was safe to book your TDi Galaxy's in for their timing belt changes at 40,000 intervals..................... Maybe not. It may be that some TDi's still have 60,000 while others are 40,000. My dealer called and told me that, where they have been making sure every TDi in on 40,000 multiples gets a timing belt change, they have discovered that the advice from the centre is not clear. They were dealing with an '03' plate TDi and, on this model, it really remained 60,000. They have checked with Ford and various documentation and read-outs conflict. To be fair, the dealer was trying to explain the extreme difficulty they're having to get a clear line on this despite their very best efforts. They seem very sincere - the service manager is an honest and ethical fellow (boy, I think he's needed the patience of a saint with our car and us lately). So my advice to you lot is get a concrete assurance from your dealer and, in the absence of that, follow your service book. That way the hell of a siezed engine will be Ford's responsibility should the worst happen to you. Regards Blatters Quote
Guest lablover Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 I've just had q quote from my local Ford Dealer for a major servive (120k miles) and a cambelt change. They quoted me Quote
Taliska Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 It seems the mis-quote was the real price to do the job on a different engine... Mine's the 115bhp and the Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 This is all very worrying! My ford dealer assured me that my 52 ghia tdi did not need a cam belt change before I took delivery (68k on the clock) because the more recent engines had chains and didn't need changing. I believed him because he is, after all, the main dealer and is therefore an expert. I am just going upstairs to lie down.... :( :) :) Quote
lazyb5 Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Hi scorpio i think i may be in the same boat so to speak been looking at my friends 52 1.9tdi i`m sure i asked about the cambelt and he said its a chain then came home with service books etc started to read up and its says cambelt change at 40k :) have started another thread in technical but so far everybody has a belt and has got them changed around 40k :) Quote
mumof4 Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 you get cam belts...timing chains and timing belts....i think Quote

italiastar Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 For the record, my dealer assures me that my 2003 (130BHP) Alhambra is 60K. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder who's correct. Quote
ninjakev Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 Just had 40k service and cam belt change on our 2003 TDI 130 - total cost was 431 of your earth pounds, which I thought was pretty reasonable. Also had the recall work for the dual mass flywheel done - does anyone know if this work included fitting a new clutch? Reason I ask is the invoice stated a 'clutch repair kit' amongst other items but the service reception girl wasn't too sure. It has to go back in for a new CV joint boot (the parts are on back-order) but this is covered under warranty......phew - it runs out at end of next month  lets hope they get the parts soon :D .....EDIT.....Just checked the recall section - the clutch was replaced.......must remember to use the 'Search' facility more often Quote
widu13 Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Just got a quote from a small non franchaised garage. From the workshop manual- 2 1/2 hrs for a 130 plus the belt, that'll be Quote
seatkid Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 The mechanic is ex VW. Small wonder..... as its usually the tensioner or idler roller that fails.....thats why THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE CHANGED along with the cambelt.....err the price of those bits is somewhat more than the belt. Quote

seatkid Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 They should be replaced - most dealers do this but a few don't - It always pays to check in detail what work is to be done - don't be afraid to ask or query....you're the customer. :25: Quote

tim-spam Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 In fact, VW recommends a belt and roller(s) change every 40,000 miles, until some time in 2003 when the belt and rollers (there are 2) were uprated. The interval is now 60,000 miles for the belt and 120,000 miles for the rollers. Apparently, if the later parts (which are now the only ones available from VW) are fitted to earlier cars, the longer intervals also apply. Quote
widu13 Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 I know that this is the 40k + cambelt thread, but may I borrow it and ask who's had the best price for cambelt and rollers only ie no service. (Not inc the DIYers. I did an old Skoda and an old Polo but that's my limit!) I'm still waiting on the chap who previously quoted Quote
Guest mcyoungy Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I know this is a bit old but.......just been quoted Quote
Guest mcyoungy Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Took the gal in this morning. 3 hours later a phone call to say all done. Quote
tim-spam Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 At the recommended 40,000 miles, mine looked as good as new - no signs of any cracks or wear, and the width was in specification for a new belt. I'll still change mine every 40,000 miles though. Quote
