I have owned a 1999 T. Reg Focus 1.8 Zetec for 2 years which I bought from a main delaler. Since the day I took delivery I have had a problem with the engine speed picking up to 2-3000rpm when I use the clutch. The probelm isn't constant, it tends to happen when the engine is started but not necessarily when the engine is cold. The problem usually disappears after 5 minutes of driving. It's VERY annoying and makes clucth control heavy work.

I noticed and complained about this during the initial test drive and was assured (by the salesman!) that it would be fixed before delivery, it wasn't.

When I returned the car, the Ford dealer told me that their diagnostic check identified no problems and nothing could be done.

I have since taken it to a local mechanic who has told me the same.

I have put up with this for 2 years but now want to sell the car and want to fix the probelm first. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help gratefully recieved.

We had the misfortune of haveing a Focus for a courtesy car once :D it use to have a similer problem! the tickover would hang or rise if you dipped the clutch or coasted to a halt. the mechanic at the garage said it was a common fault on the Focus and could be fixed by replaceing the intake manifold, and a couple of the vacuum hose on the intake system or the PCM needed resetting :D

My mondeo does this sometimes.

I have to blip the throttle to make it stop. When you have actually stopped (after the coast) does it settle down? I have even changed my vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox - didnt make any difference.

I always thought that it could be a faulty alternator on my car, and that the brake servo was drawing too much from the battery when used and the engine management picked up the revs to help out. But after a new battery - still no difference.

I also get the complete opposite sometimes - not enough revs and the car nearly stalls. But thats only when cold. The revs do pick up if given time, but its still annoying.

i know this is an old thread but...

i drove my wifes focus (02 1.6) yesterday and it did the same thing.

clutch down and braking and the revs went up to 1500.

This was in the first 2 mins of driving (1st junction) and didnt do it again after.

Dont know if its related but also during driving some times its like something is holding the car back, brakes sticking or the long arm of the law on the bumper or someit?/?

Other than that its a great car, well just spent
