Guest weedon Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 I have recently had a problem with my Galaxy TDI where I've noticed black fumes being emitted from a small exhaust pipe under the car on the nearside. Usually notice after stopping the engine and getting out it, sometimes it keeps emitting the fumes for a few minutes afterwards. Reading through some of the posts on here it sounds like it is something to do with the aux heater but everything I've read refers to white smoke - mine is black and sooty. Also I haven't noticed any strange noises or problems heating the vehicle. Any idea if this is a problem with heater or not ? Quote
johnb80 Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 It sounds like the fuel isn't being burned correctly, maybe you need to check that enough air is getting in, clogged air intake etc ?Kind Regards - John Quote
Gadgetoid Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 To quote from the TIS: "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.118/2000 Car and Light/Medium Commercial 19.10.2000 Section: 412-02 (34) Model: Galaxy with 1.9 TDI engine with booster heater or auxiliary heater, built from 27.06.1997 to 10.09.1999 (build code VR to XJ) Markets: All Subject: Dense black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of the booster heater Summary Should a customer exprtess concern about black smoke coming from the booster heater. the probable cause may be: 1. Brief, light emission of smoke during start-up and after run of the booster heater (approx. 10-20s). Cause: One off emission of black smoke resulting from the design of the booster heater. No further action required. 2. Light emission of smoke at low ambient temperatures and high humidity. Cause: If white smoke appears at the exhaust pipe when the vehicle engine is running, then water vapour is the cause. No further action required. 3. Thick, continuous emission of grey smoke. Cause: Booster heater metering pump is faulty. Excessive deposits in the burner of the additional heater. Burner is over saturated with unburned fuel. Remedy: Install a new booster heater metering pump and, if necessary, a new booster heater." GSMGuy did a great 'how to...' access, check and change the glow plug quite recently in the Technical section, including some very useful pics. You don't say how old your Gal is, but if still in warranty, the above Technical bulletin number will help, if older then a DIY job is quite possible. I'm not sure that the problem is entirely limited to the models quoted (1997-1999) as it seems to be fairly common to have some sort of problem with this piece of kit. It was supposed to have been replaced with an improved version in later models. I guess it will all depend on just what colour your smoke is  Quote
GSMGuy Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 On the subject of smoke, I hadn't noticed any from mine at all, until yesterday - stopped at lights and clouds of the white stuff lol - cyclist nex to me was not impressed!!! Anyway, it's still working fine, and no fault codes - Am happy to leave it that way.. Mike Quote
Guest weedon Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 It's definitely thick and black, smells strongly of fuel and the emission can last for a minute or two. Sounds like the problem described with the fuel meter. It's a 2000 model. Anyone know if this is an easy fix ? Quote
Ivor Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Oh no  . My heater has started billowing out grey smoke. It's not heating properly and cuts out after a while. Looks like the metering pump??? I've had no problems at all since the aircon was fixed under warrany.... until this last couple of weeks!!! 1. Bulb failure indicator came on, checked bulbs ok, replaced switch still no brake lights....see other post....cost me Quote
Ivor Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Freezing this morning! The heater worked last night but plumetting grey smoke came out for the 20 mins it was on. This morning nothing. It really is needed! The car was really cold inside and the engine temp never went above 70. This only started last week after I got it back from the dealer who was messing with my electrics for the brake light (see here) I wonder if they distrubed the wiring near the fuse panel, or pulled a fuse for it? The billowing grey smoke could be due to unburned diesel left in the heater from the previous failed start-up. That would point to the glowplug - either failing or the fuse/wiring is loose. Any thoughts? Quote
Ivor Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 And also... Monday and today (wed), the "Check brake pads" warning is coming on.I had the rear brake pads replaced (same dealer Quote
Ivor Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Still not working. It attempts to start and usually stop after 30 seconds. Sometimes it runs but emits lots of grey smoke. I've had a look under the car, the outside of the small exhaust is covered in fluid (Diesel?), and it appears to be coming out of the joint where the small exhaust connects to the unit. It was also cold to the touch after car running for 30 mins. It's 2 deg C and the engine never got above 70 deg C. :( Quote
Mirez Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 Get a cup of tea... ...read this: http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=3623 To summarise, a lot of places will simply replace the assembly rather then strip down and replace the plug. Quote
