GSMGuy Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 I posted some pics in this thread.. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...wtopic=3623&hl= if you get stuck!! I'd go out and give all the screws a liberal spray of plusgas/wd40 tonight, and then again before you start on it! Mike Quote
NikpV Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Hi Ivor - have you had a chance to look at your vag-com and heater yet - I'm following this thread avidly since I'm trying to persuade SWMBO that I need to buy a vag-com to sort ours out (really) Quote
Ivor Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I've not had a few hours spare yet, can't do it this weekend either. I've not plugged in my VAG-COM yet either! I will post full piccies etc. when I do it. Ivor PS, My service is due, and I'm going to do it. I walked in to my local parts shop and said "I would like to order some parts to service my car". They said, "why? we have everything" B) They only thing they had was the oil filter. They were on the phone for 30 mins (true!) to the distributor and they have never heard of 505.01 oil. I am still awaiting their phone call from Monday....it's now Thursday. Methinks I'm going to try somewhere else, if that fails it's going to have to go to a stealer. So, my jobs I need to do are:1. Service2. Front pads - maybe discs too.3. Replace glowplug and play with VAG-COM Quote
Ivor Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 I finally got around to messing with my heater today. Plugged in the VAG-COM, and there were 5 error codes logged, all "Flameout".I cleared the errors, the aux heater tried to fire up but just billowed grey smoke again. The mini exhaust was cold to the touch. I squirted some more WD40 on the bolts ready to drop it to fit the new glowplug and it started to rain :D so I didn't start the job. Quote
Ivor Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 (edited) At last, I got some free time to sort out my heater. Enjoy.... http://s159.photobucket.com/albums/t139/IvorGTO/Alhambra/PICT0001.JPG 1. Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 MMM nice pink blanket you have there :) is there something you should be telling us? you know all this overtly macho car mechanics could be a cover up for the true you waiting to come out into the light? :) nice post though :) should be a great help to those that have a dead/dieing aux heater :D Quote
Ivor Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 :) (Live for speed S2 demo- my best time is 1:39 - can you beat it?) Quote
Jeff115 Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 Well done, Ivor, 'bout time someone gave the pictorial edition - this should help a lot of people :) 3 observations1. centre piece/cover for air blower - I did not notice the insulation on mine. This must be a mod to try and reduce the noise from the blower http://img96.echo.cx/img96/4825/pict00142dg.jpg 2. cover for water jacket at end of coolant pipes - I noticed that this was also raised in the centre on mine and tried without joy to fit it tightly down. Bad design as it must allow water and dirt ingress. 3. you're a brave man - did you tell SWMBO before you took the sheet off the bed :) Did you have much trouble getting the control unit/end plate screws out? I had a bit of grief there as they were seized. Regards,Jeff. Quote

gerryfr Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Ivor What a marvellous piece of work taking all those pictures and the vid. Well done. If ever you are in my neckof the woods I'll buy you a pint I'll attempt to change the glow plug on m 97 Alhambra still freh with 35Kmiles. I remember the excepetionally cool turbine sound that I heard ,once only, when the car was new. The aux heater is not mentioned in the original handbook handbook. Would you ever be able to post the part number for the glow plug you used. Many thanks Gerry Frost Co Durham. My car has a sticker under the bonnet advising of the air conditioner and reads as follows:- REFRIGERANT R134a CHARGE EVAPORATOR 1 95 +or- 50gm 2 1350? +or- 50mg Are there two circuits or am I way off beam? Masked Marauder Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 The part number for the glow plug is 7D0 963 319 and can be ordered from any VW dealers. It is Quote

Galaxy Man Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 Hello everyone this is my first post(forum virgin) on the forums though I have been looking at them since I purchased my second hand 97' Galaxy Tdi about a year ago and I have found a lot of great information, thanks to everyone for there information. Anyway back to the subject, since getting my galaxy this heater has not worked though I thought once in the winter I heard it trying to kick in, I have read all the information on it and will take it apart(thanks for the pics) and check the plug, question is the short silver tube that goes up into the underside which I presume is the air intake has nearly fallen apart, I went to my local ford spare part shop but could not get much joy out of ordering that part(will they make out i need the whole unit?) If I can order just this tube can anyone offer any help on what part number this is please? Thanks in advance. Quote

ICANTBELIEVEIT Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Hi MikeGlad I found this site. I was getting paranoid about jet engine noise and awful smell from aux heater on my brand new Sharan. Cannot believe it is normal. Here is one I haven't read anywhere before: VW told me I have to use ultralow sulphur diesel and it would clear up. Any comments?? Martina Quote
tim-spam Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Jet engine noise means it's working. Smell is probably normal as the heater works with only a small excess of air to fuel. By the way, Eberspacher heaters are used on all sorts of commercial vehicles, and are well proven and nothing new. VW even used to use them in the '60s and '70s on some of their air-cooled cars - I think the dealers were pretty useless then as well.Ultra-low sulphur diesel??? I think that's just another example of a dealer talking nonsense! Quote
rwtomkins Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 I can confirm the awful smell is completely normal. Sort of very sickly, like aviation fuel, right? Just be thankful you haven't got the awful ticking noise that goes with it, a notable feature of Galaxys around my vintage. Quote
tim-spam Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 Again, I think the ticking is normal, although I think some modifications have been made to later cars to reduce or eliminate this. I just view the ticking as another sign that the thing's working OK. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 The ticking is most likely the metering pump, we get this sometimes on the night heaters at work. Quote
rwtomkins Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the ticking meant something was wrong. It's just that a lot of owners of my vintage found it irritating. Ford apparently fixed it by putting better sound insulation on the fuel metering pump. A retro fix is available but I could never be bothered to get it done. If it ain't broke, don't fix it - you'll only get your sills crushed for your trouble. Quote
