You did - grey smoke = metering pump fault or replace unit :o

I am hoping it's something else though.

I'm going to take it off and check it's not blocked, and check the glowplug.

Gotta get one of these VAG-COMs, I'm sick of being ripped off by the dealers.

My worst was with my V6 Galaxy.

Me too, any ideas on the best laptop interface i.e. serial, parallel or USB?

Regarding the booster heater - mine has not work for a year and I recall that before it died I was getting lots of smoke :o

Recently I've checked the glow plug which can glow when out of the unit and I found and checked the air temperature sensor (thanks, Mike, I did find it attached to the wiper cables and fixed arm roughly in line with the battery) by checking the resisance through the sensor (while it was in the freezer  ) and by bypassing the sensor with a wire across the terminals.

So still no jet turbine noise to my welcoming ears and could certainly do with the unit during this cold snap.

So my suspect now is the metering pump but I'll get a VAG-COM before I look to replace it.

Questions:

Is there a way to check the metering pump when the unit is not working or has anyone tried this?

I wonder why your unit is still attempting to start, Ivor - I would have thought that the ECU would disable on 3 or 5 failed starts?

What flame are you talking about here, Mike

But it may also be the pump ovedosing it on fuel - smothering the flame
- I thought that it worked on pressure after initial assistance from glow plug?

It starts every time I start the car engine, by which I mean that I can hear the jet engine blower start. Most times it then stops after 30 seconds, but every 4th /5th go (starting the car) it runs with lots of grey smoke. I suspect that the glowplug isn't getting hot enough so it's not burning the fuel, just making it smoke. Either that or the metering pump is pumping too much diesel.

I'll know if it's the glowplug when I take it out, hopefully this weekend, weather permitting.

USB is the one I'm going for if I don't fix the glowplug,

Jeff, the flame inside the heater... The spray of diesel ignited by the glow plug and kept burning by the combustion (air) blower...

With VAG-COM you can test the pump and the blower to see if they work. I got my interface from www.skpang.com I got the KEY_PRO usb/serial lead for

Does anybody know if seat have issued any Bulletins on the aux heater and it's problems. The parents of one of the nippers friends has an Alhambra which is emmiting thick grey smoke almost continuously, The Seat dealer has said there is nothing wrong with it and they'll "give it a clean out on the next service", now it'll be just over 3 years old and out of warrenty at the next service (40,000 will be due about 4 months after it's 3rd birthday) so if the heater is caput they want it fixed now. I've suggested using another dealer but they are a bit few and far between, said i'd find out what i can so they can talk to the dealer with some knowledge. I've found dealers get a bit wary of spouting the usual fantasy stories if they think you know absolutely nothing about your car.

(My engine only reached 52 Deg C this morning, if it was not for the heated seats I'd freeze! Gotta get this sorted. I'm also loosing around 5-6 MPG coz the engine is running cold. I usually tease 39-43 MPG on the morning run, now I'm only getting 35ish)

My Aux Heater packed in Jan 2004, can was 41 months, had service done by SEAT main dealer that I now use & said it needed replacing. Anyway the Service manager had a word with SEAT Cust Services & I had it replaced FOC.

Hello, I'm having problems with the auxillary heater on my car , as it's out of warranty I don't want to stick it in the dealer to repair & give me a huge bill.

Could anyone let me know what the most common faults are & what approx price for replacements are.

Also if connected to VAG COM will this highlight the exact component causing the fault or will it be a bit vague

Thanks

See my post above. How long out of warranty!!! Can't charge for looking. Are they prepared to make a contribution?

If you don't ask, you don't get

My brother-in-law recently bought a Y plate 2001 Zetec Tdi.

It was obvious to me that the jet wasn't working although Arthur Daley bloke didn't have a clue what I was on about. Also tried to tell me that Cambelt was 80K until I pointed it out in service book.Told him not to buy unless it was put right first but he did anyway.

Longshot was that he went to Ford to get it fixed & used his claimback warranty. Wiring to sensor I think

Gazza,

It's a 2000 X so it's wellout of warranty, but I also have a used car extended warranty by Daewoo, which I have already checked to see if this is covered & as it's not i'll try to repair myself. Also how reliable are they? as it seems everyone has had a problem & then some people even mention it only working for a short while after repair.

Sounds like another crap system like the A/C

My auxiliary heater doesn't seem to work. Having interesting conversations with the dealer as there seem to be different words of the same thing. I've been referringf the the auxiliary heater; the service technician showed me how to control the rear heater controls. I pointed the the thing underneath the nearside passenger door! He showed me the computer print out for the Climate control and it showed no defect. From this thread it looks as though the auxiliary diesel fired heater might be on a different thread of the diagnostic tool. Does anyone know for sure? I can then go back to the dealer! It stopped working after a sevice at which they diagnosed a noisy heater- ordered a replacement and fitted it. It sounds from this thred that they also needed to reactivate it in the ECU Mine is a '04 reg Alhambra 130 TDI

Thanks in advance

My VAG-COM has arrived. I'll give the manual a good read and checkout my 'Aftermarket Sony radio' to see if it needs a wire disconnecting, then when I'm confident I'll plug it in to try to find what's gone wrong with my heater.

I've had problems since it was at the stealers a few weeks ago, and from what I've read, the VAG-COM will tell me if they have been messing, because if they altered any device settings, then their offical computer will have left its serial number in the device change readings.

A full report will appear in this thread, both of the diag readings and when I get the glowpug (2-3 weeks delivery, special order) how I got on changing it.

Ivor - Sod the manual and get it pluged in, and whoever was asking, the aux eater has it's own address, different from the aircon/climate - it is on channel/address 18.

Terminology Counts !

The auxiliary heater is the thing that warms the rear of the car up and as far as I am aware is standard on all Galaxy's

The booster heater is the jet engine that never works properly under the passenger side wheel arch and is for diesel versions only

So back to the seat dealer 'My booster heater is knackered mate' should leave him in no doubt whatsoever.

No, the Auxiliary heater can be time set and is an advanced version of the booster heater.

Description and Operation:

A variable additional heater is now available as an auxiliary heater in addition to the additional heater described in section 34-03 as an optional extra for all engine variants.

Unlike the standard fitted additional heater, this one can be controlled via a control panel whilst driving or standing.

The auxiliary heater is supplied with fuel from the fuel tank via a separate metering pump. An additional battery provides the power supply.

The switch-on time can be pre-set with the control unit for standing operation. In standing operation the heater will only run for a maximum of 30 minutes to protect the additional battery.

In normal driving operation the auxiliary heater also heats the coolant in the engine cooling circuit.

The heater can be switched on and off manually for immediate heating. The maximum heating time is limited to 30 minutes.

Can't argue with that - my simple definition is based upon the TIS sections; more confused than ever now.

The Haynes manual (1995 to 2000) uses the term booster heater for the fuel driven one, with glow plug under the NSR door.

It has no mention of an auxiliary heater.

Didn't get a chance this weekend.

I drove my wife's Saxo of Friday (02 reg, 19,000 miles) and heard a metallic grating noise on braking. I discovered that the front pads were down to zero, metal to metal. She said she told me last Sunday??? I have it serviced at the stealers - why didn't they point out they needed changing  .

Anyway, had lot's of trouble fitting them, since the ones in the box from Halfords wouldn't make up two pairs. I took them back, spent 30 minutes trying to convince them they were wrong. Eventually, they got another box and a customer who happened to be next to me who is a mechanic showed them that they were wrong. I took the new set home and they fit first time. Anyway, that destroyed my Saturday, and Sunday was Mothers Day
