> Hello friends,

I dont have a galaxy, but i have a sister... Sharan 1.9 TDi 2004.

I had this problem on my heater... grey smoke from the heater...

Read though this thread, somewhere in the other 34 pages there is information on replacing the burner gauze in the combustion chamber, you'll need some gaskets and have to strip the unit down further. Have a look at the video posted further up!

Can anyone tell me what the exhaust casing is made of? I figure it's stainless steel but given the weight I thought I'd check it wasn't aluminium. Going to weld the exhaust port back on this weekend.

mine was smoking the other day. I actually watched white smoke coming into the cabin from where the passenger  seat belt is attached. Absolutely crazy design, I am surprised  that there hasn't been a recall. I thought I would pull the fuse but couldn't work out which one it was. I have found a solution which is dead easy, will never smoke into the cabin again and the heater can still work. I removed the air intake pipe and turned it end for end. I cut a couple of slots in the other end so it would clamp up tight, only made of ally so really easy to cut. I also drilled a small drain hole in it before it turned up to the heater just in case any water found its way in. I filled in the hole that was left in the sill grommit to stop any water getting in there. Simple, cost nothing and took about 10 minutes.

Can you add a picture of the mod, will help to clarify what you have done.

I presume it's just drawing air straight in now from under the car rather than from the sill? If so I think you might need some sort of air filter on there.

I expect a small K&N type filter would be beneficial for tiny particles but I can't see anything big getting in as it is a long tube but I may do. It wont smoke out the cabin now though, that's for sure!

just a thought but would smoke coming out of the air intake be indicative of a problem in the heater, maybe gasket failure or some such?

looks like air filters are available for eberspacher units :

I agree there is a problem with the heater!!! That is what happens when it fails to ignite properly due to; a faulty glow plug, insufficient fuelling due to the pump, clogged up spinner or any combination of these, intermittantly or not!! Cheers for the link, I'll have a look at the filters.

Having had my heater on my work bench for a couple of years, having stripped and cleaned it out,  i have decided to put it back on the car. The model is the latest D5Z-F and I did have the dreaded 65335 fault code. I will give it a go but the gaskets are shot , does anyone know if they are generic erbespacher gaskets available from the likes of PF jones or do I need to go to VW, and if so has anyone got the part nos. For about £30 its worth a shot before I spend a couple of hundred ( and wait till next winter) on a recon unit. Thanks

If its a Mk2, then I believe you have to clear the error code using VAGCOM/VCDS before it will attempt to fire up.

Mine is playing up, it cuts out after a minute or so, i have checked it over with Vagcom it showed 01410 heater over temp I can't hear or feel the run on pump so I'm guessing that could be my problem.

I have a couple if questions please..

1) does anybody have a link to the brushes so I can have a go at replacing them

2) which auxilary heater should I have and I'm going to replace to glow plug too so will it be the one with 2 wires?

05 1.9 tdi 115 manual.

Thanks

I wouldn't bother changing then glow plug until you have changed the run on pump brushes as you may not need to. It's clearly starting up as it will only be getting to over temperature because the run-on pump isn't going,as you have surmised.

I've just taken the booster heater off mine yesterday. Mine's also a 2005 and has a D5Z-F fitted. It is more than likely the same in yours. I will start stripping it tomorrow but have already sheared 4 of the mounting bracket screws - steel screws into aluminium isn't a brilliant idea for something that hangs in the road spray!

I have changed the brushes in mine and it is a lot less hassle and will I believe fix your problem. The pictures in the how to on fordmpv.com are from when I did mine.

Ive got brushes ,around5.5x6mm about15mmlong rear entry braid but ive used them to redo my pump ok. You just need to cut the brush down short enuff that the braid is well in the slot
I figured the pump has done over 90000 miles and the xar wont see another 10yrs!

welcome to the forum,

whats the temperature where you are?

as it should if working correctly only come on when its 10 degrees or lower.saying that on my old mk2 it would come on up to about 12 degrees.

well it is now about 40 degrees centigrade, it's summer time

I have already read that you cant start it above 5-10 degrees

but my question was...where is the start button?

or it start on its own if is cold?

p.s. glad to be here

There is no manual control on the cars with standard heater controls it's fully automatic, initially controlled by an outside air temperature sensor (10deg on MK2)  but is also influenced by engine temperature

Only cars with independent heating option can manually start the heater without engine running.

Eberspächer do make an upgrade kit to independent heating which involves fitting a timer unit, control relays and associated wiring but is quite expensive.

You do have to remove the water pipes to strip the later D5Z-F heaters I'm afraid and the glow plug is inside the unit accessed by removing both plastic tops and the fan unit end piece. This can damage the joining gaskets if not done very carefully. See my old posts regarding a strip down. As with many car parts they were put together dry of grease so can be difficult to take apart due to seized torx fasteners. Good luck

(NB: I have only had time to read about half of the 28 pages of this thread! Many thanks to all who have posted their experience and pics. Apologies if the questions have already been answered.)

Looks like I need to replace the glowplug. I've got the 01409 35-00 multiple flameout code and LOTS of grey smoke.

I also have a fairly loud gurgling coming from the heater, easily heard inside the car, and a clear liquid dribbling from the heater exhaust for a few minutes after heater start. I've got a glowplug on order and have dropped the unit down off the car - it's a D5WZ. There was quite a bit of this liquid that landed on me during dropping the heater onto the ground.

Question: what is this liquid? I don't think its coolant (not pink enough) and its not diesel (not smelly enough).

I am guessing it is condensation from not really getting hot enough.

Anyone agree / disagree? Anyone had the gurgling? It sounds like the blower has the liquid in it.

I have to drive the car to Austria in 6 days, so paying express delivery for the glowplug.

Not tried taking the screws out yet, that will be later after it stops hosing it down and hailing intermittently.

Thanks in advance,

Matt
