rigsworth Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Wayne, It's a tricky one. I have been told by Ford that it's a heater problem and then told by a VW specialist that it's a water pump failure. The heater replacement costs Quote
david3103 Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 I'm hoping that this heater is the cause of the smell of diesel in my car, and the occasional puff of exhaust smoke that creeps into the cabin?? I'll be pulling that fuse first thing in the morning. Then investigating the glowplug replacement Quote
marinabrid Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 the aux heater wont cause the car to overheat, if its working ok you will hear it whining. has the small exhaust dropped of it allowing fumes to not be sent away from under the car . if the car overheats and the vents are stone cold after 30 mins of running id say its the water pump, possibly the impeller come off. wayne12 Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 Hi all, have a dead booster heater on my 2005 1.9tdi with climate. Have tried to check the temp sensor which should be under the skuttle on the near side but can not see anything there. the only thing i can see is a connector attached to the plastic skuttle with 4 wires going in and the same coming out andcontinuing to the offside, can anybody help. Wayne Quote
pkc Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 It should be there, but you probably need to take the scuttle off to see it. On the nearside wiper linkage, there is a plastic connector clipped to it that holds the sensor, somewhere in this thread there is a way to test it. Have you checked the fuse? Quote
wayne12 Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Hi again guys, today have bridged the outside sensor but still no life in the heater. Took the aux heater to bits today and followed the instructions on page 6, but the heater is different and looks like you have to remove the coolant pipes to remove the plastic cover to get to the glowplug. When taking the cover off the end all that is inside is the fan motor. My galaxy is a 2005 ghia with climate.Any help gladly received, Wayne. Quote
robthemuso Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Hi everyone Like most other galaxy owners my booster heater is also dead (1999 1.9 ghia x). Can anyone please tell me which is the fuse that controls the heater. If I knew which one it is I could check that as a first line of approach. Many thanksRob Quote
Mirez Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Read the PDF above! Fuses 2, 12 and 19 all have outputs to the heater. Quote
ianyerman Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 stripped my heater down (redrilling and threading holes out) and found fan to be sized, freeed up and ordered new glow plug as it was dead. tested temp switch and found it need to be in the freezer for about 30 mins before switching. the question is do these switches give bother as i have seen on here they switch at 10c and some say 5c i think mine has to be frozen. has any one ever seen the fans to be sized before? Quote
ianyerman Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 ok replaced glow plug today, bypassed temp switch but no joy, didnt even here the fan trying to kick in/vac com says no responce from controller, so cant see if there is any faults. any ideas???? Quote
Mirez Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 Check all the fuses to the unit and then check the wiring, also make sure you reconnected the connector inside the unit when you took it apart. If you can't get a responce from it then thats the first port of call as if its locked out then you wont get anywhere until its reset. Quote
ianyerman Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 have checked all fuses and all ok, checked wires and all okif it needs reset how do i do that as vag com says no responce from controller? Quote
Mirez Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 You can't (not that I know of anyway) - if there is no responce then like I said, thats the first port of call. If you can't get comms then you need to double and tripple check all the wiring as thats certainly an electrical fault. Get a volt meter and ensure you have 12V and a good ground at the heater as a basic start. Quote
ianyerman Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 ok, will try again. is there any where i could find a wireing diagram?found one on here but doesnt give all the pins. Quote
mysterygrimm Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Thank you all for the information on this site. I have a Galaxy 2005, TDI (130) Ghia. Had all the problems about cold starts listed earlier, so had the diagnostics socket read by a friend. This confirmed the open circuit on the auxiliary heater glow plug. Darn! I rang Fords, gave them my registration number, and they ordered the glow plug for me. Was gob smacked by the cost ( Quote
johnford Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Well it looks like my aux/booster heater has stopped working so I've been scanning this and other forums. However I have two problems:- 1. Purchased a cable of ebay and connected to car. It reads engine abd etc modules but it gives 'no response' from heater module ;-( I take it that even if I replace the glow plug it wont work as I cannot reset it. Is changing the software to 3.11 worth a try? Ifs a 2000 galaxy with connector in ashtray. 2. Tried fords (offered Quote
Bandito Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Firstly thanks to everyone for the help i've had from this site especially about Aux. heater.Today i got around to stripping down the heater to change the glow plug came apart fairly easy, however when i got to the plug the wires that connect to the plug are neither a push on type or screw on type. The wires seem to be soldered on has any one got any ideas thanks very much. Quote
wayne12 Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Hi Guys, on my 2005 Galaxy the heater is different to the early models. The glow plug is only available from vw or Fords and has two wires which plug into the ecu under the plastic over, this means that the coolant pipes have to be disconnected unlike on earier models.Wayne Quote
mysterygrimm Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Hi Guys, on my 2005 Galaxy the heater is different to the early models. The glow plug is only available from vw or Fords and has two wires which plug into the ecu under the plastic over, this means that the coolant pipes have to be disconnected unlike on earier models.Wayne Thanks, sound like yours is like mine! Unfortunately I had to take it all apart to figure out that the water pipes need to come off. ^_^ I tried to log my efforts here -> http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~philipb/GALA...aux_heater.html. Hope someone finds it useful. I've got to the point of realising I need to undo the water pipes, but I'm wary of doing it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~philipb/GALAXY_HEATER/aux_heater6.jpg http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~philipb/GALAXY_HEATER/aux_heater2.jpg Quote
ianyerman Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 thanks for such a great site, got my heater going (sounds like a 747 takeing off) and also replaced brushes in my run on pump, the only thing is after a 10mile drive in a nice warm car (1st time ever i had a warm alhambra) i left the engine running for about 30mins and the heater never shut off. is this normal?I have the outside temp switch bypassed. next job is to fix passeners side electric window. thanks again for all the help this site has given me. Animal169 Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Well, I've been seaching the web to try and find a replacement glow plug for the infernal heater, but I must say Hans Motors has come up trumps again, just under Quote
SteveB Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) I have a slightly different problem. Earlier during the year I had to take the wiper mechanism out ( twice in fact ). Since the cold weather has kicked in I've notice the booster heater has failed to start ( resulting in some VERY codl trips to work ). Putting 2 and 2 together I figured I must have disconnected the sensor from the front wiper mechanism, however on inspection I cant see anything resembling it. If anyone can let me know what it looks like I'd be really grateful, thanks. ( 1.9tdi Gia 2000 plate ) ( BTW Looking in the Heinz manual it makes no mention of an air sensor on the windscreen wiper mechanism, so I'm wondering if its different for my model ) Edited January 6, 2009 by SteveB Quote
gregers Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 dunno if this is for your model, but iirc there has posted before that the sensor is behind the passenger headlight? Quote
AD90 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Changed the glow-plug in SWMBO car today, heater now working and did not have to plug in VAG.com Thanks for all the tips. AD90 Quote
bofus Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 IT WORKS..!!! I bought the car last year, no heater fitted, water pipes bypassed, fuel pipe bunged and the bottom half of the bracket missing. Over the last few months I have managed to obtain everything I needed except for a working heater. The freebie heater I got doesn't even buzz let alone work. The aux water pump also failed over Xmas. After a bit of digging around, some unhelpful email with Eberspacher I found out that the Early Mk2's use the D5WZ which is a OEM variant used by VAG and MercBenz. Lots of money later I purchased a refurbed unit from 'webastopl' on Ebay. Nice helpful guy and very quick delivery of a very clean unit from Poland. This was fitted last night (and typically the very cold weather is now finished!!) I now have a (very) warm car, VAG-com talks to module 18 and the Climatronic operating parameters seem to be programmed to work around the heat from the booster. If anyone plays with VAG-com The read out fields arevoltage, burner temp, water temp (in?) water temp (out?)Engine running, unit enabled, ?,?Blower, glow plug, fuel pump, ? gav Quote
