The photo's and video that I posted for the aux heater on page 6 are maxing out the bandwidth on my web server, so sometimes they are not available - usually until the end of the month when the bandwidth is reset by my ISP.

I have now moved them to another server but I cannot edit the post to point them to the new location. I have asked a forum moderator to do this for me. Hopefully this will cure the problem.

Many thanks to Ivor for his pictorial work (on page 6) with his booster heater.

Today I replaced the glowplug in mine to hopefully restore some warmth to those journeys where its just not possible to get a decent speed up and aid the warming up process.

The original plug (as shown in attached photo) was not looking too great in comparison to the new one that was replacing it. The tip was severely rounded with numerous sooty deposits.

I got the replacement from Ford for just over

Hi Mike,

Just read you artical on the rear heater glow plug. Brilliant and helpful thanks... I sadly could not see the pictures as they wouldn't download. Could you possibly sent them to me? ian.sharp8@btinternet.com.

Only this morning whilst taking the wife to Morrisons, I had to pull over because the smoke coming from the heater was terrible. I felt a complete idiot when a man came running from a commercial building asking if I needed a fire-engine. Amazingly, another man arrived who actually works for SEAT as a machanic and informed me of the heater glow-plug. He later phoned me with a price of

Good to hear from you again Mike

Sorry to hear that the Merc wasn't up to scratch - but thanks for pushing up our collective spirits with the news ! LOL

What were the problems?

And make sure to pop back with your tales of woes with the Volvo ( have a neighbour with one of these - apparently the petrol version manages all of 15mpg around town)

Can anyone tell me the exact location of the ambient temperature for the booster heater and how to get at it on my 2006 Galaxy?

I seem to be getting confused between the different models and I dont really want to start stripping down my car without being sure of its location.

Thanks

TIS says it's near the wiper mechanism on the passenger side.

But, if it's a 2006 model why don't you just take it to a Dealer to sort out? You should have a 3 year warranty.

Your right Insider, if it was faulty I could take it to a local Dealer, But the Aux heater is working ok but I want to mod the wiring so I can control when it comes on.

I spend most days doing very short journeys and the booster heater is really screwing up my fuel consumption without any benefit as by the time Iit warms up, I,m getting out, sometimes for several hours.

For example today the heater was on all day as the ambient temp was ~9 degrees, my fuel consuption has falling from about 43 mpg to 32mpg for the urban driving I'm doing.

I need to know it location and how to get to it OR preferably, a wiring diagram of the 2006 model so I can mod it.

it is/used to be near the wiper - passenger side but IIRC you have to remove the black shroud below the windscreen to access it - mod is simple for what you want just cut one of the wires and extend to a simple switch somewhere inside....

I dont think the aux heater is doing all the damage to your mpg, a cold engine is not helping .....

That was my preferred choice to put a switch in the temp sensor circuit inside the cockpit, but I'm struggling to find a suitable wiring diragram.

I do agree that this may not be whole problem, but considering this would be a simple mod, I thought it wold be worth a try if only to confirm just what effect it does have.

At least I would be able to control its operation and therby get more reliable observations.

if the temp sensor(realy is just a switch) is still in its original position then you don't really need the wiring diagram you just need to switch that wire in series with the temp switch

Yes thats correct, but that would mean breaking into the wiring at or near the sensor up by the wiper assy, which means, I think disassembling the wipers etc, and then running a cable into the cockpit to a switch OR breaking into the wiring inside the cockpit as I said earlier. However, having looked at a number of wiring diagrams for the galaxy, none of which I beleive are for my model, one end of the sensor goes to the Aux heater controller and the other comes into the cockpit to one of the relays on the relay panel and there are a lot of cables/connectors on the back of that panel and I'm not about to go messing about on the back of the relay panel without the correct diagram.

There should be a simple 2-wire connector to the temp. switch near the wipers (one black and one blue/white wire). If you disconnect this and plug a switch into the connector instead you would have manual control over when the booster heater switches on and off. This has the advantage of being easily reversed if needed. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't advise breaking into wiring behind the fusebox - there are enough electrical problems documented on this forum when the fuesbox is left alone!

hi all, dont know if anyones asked but i cant find anything on the search,

can someone explain how these heaters works. mk1 97 year, on turing key the booster used to give a whirring noise for 30 secs then shut off, then it would fire up after another minuite or so and work its cycle. then after a week off on hols it just didnt restart. i swopped the glowplug but now it dont even whirr on start up, its gone totally dead.

id like to know if someone can tell.... on turning the key what is the sequence of events that follows to make the heater work,

is it , a signal to the fuel pump first or the glow plug or what, id like to try an dfind which wires to test for voltage on start up to see if they are sending signals.

also if its recieved a shut down signal from the ecu is it the ecu that then blocks the signal or is it the module in the heater itself that is shut down.

If it's tried and failed to start a few times the ECU will lock it out. This can only be reset with VAG-COM.

The ECU and the booster heater module itself control its operation. The only other factor is the ambient temperature switch - there should be 12v on the black wire at the booster heater connector when it's cold enough for the switch to activate (<10C).

that will depend on the reason for locking out e.g. Glowplug open circuit errors do not lock it out but errors like Flameout do need resetting, there is a list somewhere on the forum ...

its odd, after i fitted the new glowplug it worked after 3 seperate engine starts following each other. it fired up for around 3 mins and there i was saying , well done , then , all of a sudden it just shut down before the water was hot and has never tried to start since. have tried vag com but it seems you cant connect with the aux heater on the mk 1 model. all it says is, no responce from controller.

link to non-start faults which shouldn't cause lock out

Is the "run on" pump working? ....... Although you say the coolant temperature wasn't hot, it may have been at the heater itself and caused an overheat condition. Has the ambient air temperature dropped enough for it to restart since? ..... I know mine hasn't since the last cold snap we've had.

A very valid point , there are too many reported electrical problems, so whilst breaking into the wiring on the relay panel would save me having to find a way of running cables into the cockpit to put the switch in the cabin, I guess it could be asking for trouble. Next opportunity I get I'll have a look at the sensor end.
