Our 1.9tdi Galaxy overheats and looses water when traveling at 80mph. It seems fine at lower speeds. Mechanic doesn't think it's the head gasket. The water pump has been changed and a new radiator cap fitted. Anyone know what this could be?

Was the thermostat changed at the same time when the pump was done?

 

I had an Alhambra that did the same, usually up hill it over heated. I never resolved it. The guy I sold it too told me afterwards that it was a head gasket. Only have his word though

If there's evidence of coolant around the battery area then it's most likely being blown out the cap under pressure.

Is there any signs of excess pressure?

 

1.Is the system still under pressure when cold

2.fluctuating coolant level

3. Heater keeps going cold

4 With cap off does coolant spew over while engines running

 

any of these can be attributed to head gasket failure.

on my mums ford puma she had the same problem,driving it hard round town no probs driving it long journeys ended up with no coolant,turned out to be a crack in the cylinder head that only opened up under load.

Chrispb The coolant does come out by the cap and there is still pressure when cold.not tried running the engine with the cap off. Heater doesn't go cold. No water in oil, no oil in water (just some rust where we've had no antifreeze in it), no white smoke. It's been pressure tested which was fine and a mechanic I know said he doesn't think it is the head gasket. He had it idling for 3 hours and it didn't overheat once or loose water. We traveled 120 or so miles on Monday at a steady speed 65/70 mph. No overheating or coolant loss. However on the way home Huby decided to do 80mph and almost instantly the car overheated and when we pulled over you could see where coolant had come out by the cap and when we removed the cap loads bubbled out. I don't believe the thermostat was changed and I have brought 1 to put in the car. I am really hoping it's not something as drastic as the head but is there a definitive way to check?

P.s is there a cooling fan in the diesel engines as I don't believe I've actually ever heard 1, even when it overheated!? I have Def heard the fan running after the engine is switched off in other cars I've had (petrol engines)

Yes if it's overheating the fan should kick in. My Galaxy only has one, my Alhambra had 2 and when it over heated they still used to run for a few minutes after switching off. You'd be able to see them at the back of the radiator

OK thanks Russats pretty sure mine isn't working then which could be part of my problem! Going to Garage tomorrow for diagnostics check re my right indicator not working so will mention it.

You have combustion pressure in your cooling system.

In a car running normally the rise in pressure as the engine gets hot would return to zero when cold, you have combustion gases trapped in the system until you release the cap or is released through the valve in the pressure cap if the pressure present is higher than the blow of setting of the cap.

 

Cooling fans are not required above speeds of approximately 40MPH the ram effect will be sufficient to keep the engine a normal operating temperature.

The fans will normally be running on first speed all the time aircon is on anyway providing aircon is actually working also for the fans to operate by way of the coolant sensor in the radiator there needs to be coolant in contact with it which may not be the case if there are quantities of air/combustion gas trapped in the system.

 

Running a car with alloy head and no anti freeze coolant additive only makes things worse as corrosion sets in and eats away at alloy parts.
