richyrich Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Does anyone know the part number for the insulation jacket around the VW 1.9tdi engine in my Gal or where I can get one - mine has disintegrated into nothing!Rich Quote
chrispb123456 Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 My guess is it's going to be expensive but here's the VW number. 7M3103954 Quote
insanitybeard Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 Do you mean the 'beautification' cover that sits on top of the rocker cover, or are you meaning what I assume may be number 4 here? Or is it something else entirely?! Quote
richyrich Posted January 30, 2015 Author Report Posted January 30, 2015 Insanitybeard - doesn't look like number 4 in this - it's just a shaped piece of foam that fits snugly around the front of the engine as you look directly at it. (Know what I mean?)I'm guessing it's to stop freezing cold air going straight on to the engine in this weather as you drive at speed - and lots of other reasons regarding temperatures /circulation etc etc.chrisb123456- I'll check that thanks -didn't think it would cost a lot - if it does I'll stick something there myself.Thanx guysRich Quote
chrispb123456 Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 The picture is the right part but these sort of things are mega expensive for what they are, would be interested to know the price but am not unduly worried as mines been gone for a few years. Quote

Russats Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 Do they have an effect on the engine temperature? Mine doesn't have one and runs fairly cool, especially with the heater on full. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 Do they have an effect on the engine temperature? Mine doesn't have one and runs fairly cool, especially with the heater on full.Primarily for noise insulation, as for the heater running cool with max fan speed is your booster heater working? Quote
insanitybeard Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 Is this jacket something that affixes to the underside of the plastic top cover? My 130ps TDI has the slightly different type of top cover to the plain black plastic one, and the only insulation is the foam insulation on the reverse side of this cover. Quote

Russats Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 No the booster heater does not work. The heater does work. The engine temp rarely reaches 90 when the heater is on. Quote

seatkid Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 From experience of my first Alhambra, what I did from day one on my current car was to insulate the long runs of heater piping that run from the engine to the rear heater under the car with foam cladding thats used on central heating - I used 22mm which is not quite big enough, a slightly larger size would be better. Still in perfect condition after 16 years... Even with a working booster heater on winter trips to eastern europe in winter where temperatures were below -20 deg C, I found that I have to mask off approx 2/3rd of the upper radiator grill to get the temperature gauge to normal.(no engine jacket on Mk1) So I would image the engine jacket would help a bit with heating. As the foam they use on the engine cover and tray just disintegrates after 6 or 7 years, if you really want an engine jacket, I would make something DIY with better heat resistant material. Masking off some of the radiator would be easier though. Quote
Russats Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I'm guessing mine hasn't worked for a while, run on pump and heater unit probably need looking at. Quote
xavier Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Before tackling the booster heater I fixed the run on / auxiliary pump. It alone actually made a noticeable difference to the heater performance, I could start to feel warm (well, not cold!) air coming through the airvents after a couple of minutes whereas before I had to wait until the engine was nearly at temperature. With a working booster heater I can have the heater on full blast and the engine will still keep warming up. Quote
Russats Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 Do you lose much coolant while doing the run on pump. Does it need to be bled afterwards? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 You wont lose to much, the hardest part is getting the spring hose clips off, just run engine with cap off till engines warmed up and recheck level. Quote
Russats Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 I've found the brushes on ebay. There are 4 in total aren't there. They appear easy enough to replace. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=141532878905&alt=web Quote
