Hi all - and thanks for the help I've already found on this forum! I arrived here after searching Google for help with a couple of problems with my '52' Galaxy 115bhp - the main issue being overheating, temp gauge and heaters going hot/cold mainly when towing or pushing on a bit, and residual pressure in the coolant system even when cold. Despite the local garage industry never hearing of a problem with the 'PD' engine, it appears I am far from alone!

After all of the usual cheap parts changes and diagnostics, a few days ago I finally got the head off. The head gasket showed a slight blackened 'path' between number two cylinder and the rear water jacket. The head was pressure tested (no issue found) and skimmed, and now it is re-assembled,

The good news is that it is no longer overheating if I drive over 60mph now, and heaters are currently staying warm. The minus is that the temp gauge rises from cold, then drops, then rises again to 90deg, (i'm hoping air lock somewhere, but it evades me so far...) and there still seems to be residual pressure in the system even if I loosen the cap next morning, which isnt so promising. There will be a race car and traioler on the back at the weekend, so time will tell!!!

As part of the cooling system fun and games, I discovered that the aux coolant pump wasnt working. So with the new-found knowledge gleaned from this site, I ordered some brushes off evilbay, filed them down and installed them tonight - and now I have a working pump again, which I hope may help with the residing issues.....fingers crossed!

So now it is just the dicky central locking (started playing up a couple of weeks ago...I suspect the locking mech), and the N/S/R brake caliper sticking. Its been a bit of a money pit at the moment, but it has done 207000 virtually fault free miles :)

Change your coolant temperature sensor, that is a common issue.

Check the return hose to the bottle is clear, this hose has a restriction that can get blocked, look for a small amount of coolant dribbling back into the bottle through the small hose on the bottle.

I agree a lot of pressure in the bottle when cold is wrong and could be a sign that you still have a problem.

Cheers, I have already checked the restricter in the de-gas pipe to header tank (found out about that here too!), and I'll get another sensor.

I've got a 400 mile round trip whilst towing Tuesday /Wednesday - I'll find out for sure then I reckon!
