I'm getting a short whirring noise when I turn on the ignition. It doesn't appear to have any effect once she's started, but I think it may be rear wiper related.....just a hunch.....any ideas

could it be the run on pump you are hearing?

No, it's not the run on pump, it's coming from the fuse box by my right knee. The noise last for about 1 second

Could it be a series of clicks, very close together? If so it may be one of the relays.

I would first check the engine bay fuse box in front of the battery to see it isn't overheating/melted. If it is this could cause the village to drop enough to cause the relays to chatter. I would expect this to stop once engine is running as village from the alternator would raise the whole vehicle voltage level. This is simple to check which is why I would check it first. While you are at it check the battery voltage levels if you have a voltmeter as a falling battery could cause the same thing.

Most likely culprit though would be the for and hatch gaiter wiring breaking/shorting as this can give all sorts of strange effects as circuits that were never intended to be linked get intermittent shorts. As you believe it may be linked to rear wiper I would look for a junction block in the drivers rear access panel (right hand side in the boot where the jack etc are stored) that can be disconnected to isolate the rear hatch wiring. I'm not sure if there is one but someone will be along soon who does know. If you can disconnect here and the whirring stops it will be more than likely the worrying in the right hand hatch gaiter.

Ok, so this morning we have no wipers. I did post on here a few years ago regarding fuses for wipers but the post is no longer on here? Anyway, if as I suspect, it is a relay that has blown, does anybody know what number it is. The short noise that it was making in my original post has stopped, so I'm confident that will be it

Checked Fuse 33 and that was not the problem. I followed the steps for relay 30 on the FAQ page, and accessed the relays in level 2. Fiddling with relay 26, I managed to get it to repeat the noise it was making originally and get the wipers and blower going again.
