Noticed an occasional odd rubbing, low chirping noise from the engine when braking sharply.

 

Investigated today and found that when the engine is under load, it moves a fair bit, when you come off the throttle and the engine swings back, it makes the rubbing chirping noise.

 

I checked the stabilizer bolt and its still intact. But the large rubber bush in the end of the stabilzer mount, allowed considerable movement. About an inch of play. This allows the engine to move a fair bit. However, a new stabilizer bar is about

Its the rear bush I need as thats the one that is allowing about an inch of movement. This in turn becomes even more movement when it transfers to the engine.

I replaced all three engine mounts on my mk1 2.3 and still had snatching/engine movement so was not happy, I removed the bottom one and decided to put some small bolts through the holes in rear bush with a washer on each end tightened up to make rubber swell, that was two years ago and solved my problem.

Replaced the engine mount today. Unfortunately the new mount seems to leave pretty much the same amount of engine movement as the old mount. : (

 

 

The chirping noise I referred to in an earlier post seems to come from airbox.
