Finally set up my vcds lite this evening. Took a bit of messing around with the latency settings but finally got a good reading with latency set at 4.

Tried to connect to the auxilliary heater but it wouldnt connect. After a bit of searching I read that if the fuse has been removed then vcds will not cinnect to aux heater. Sure enough my fuse no. 12 was missing. I replaced it with a new one and was then able to connect to the aux heater.

No fault codes found. However, im a bit dubious as ti why the previous owner has removed the fuse. So I now need to wait til the weather drops so I can see if the unit fires up.

Spent ages scanning rest if car. Only fault was engine temp sensor but I know thats dodgy anyway as occasionally the temp will drop to 0 and then shoit straight back up to temp after a minute or so.

So all in all quite happy. Now just to find out whats causing the whooshing noise from engine bay upon hard acceleration.

i would hazzard a guess that it was removed because your heater is rather smoky ole chap.lol

Only if it actually "flame outs" or doesnt fire up. More than just glow plug when unit is smokey.....

Check the numerous threads inc the FAQs. For example, iirc there is a fine gauze that should glow red hot and keep the flame going. That is one item that erodes away leading to incomplete combustion (white/grey smoke)

Re smoking heater, I find mine has problems when the fuel tank is less than 1/2 full. Dosing pump? Anyway my cure is to make sure she's more than 1/2 full for the winter (which is probably a good idea anyway).

you don't need to wait for cold weather,  just bridge the terminals on the sensor clipped to the wiper linkage, use a mini fuse and if working the heater will fire up with a cold engine. there are lots of threads about this on the forum.

Got a phone call from the mrs this morning. Apparently, the booster heating fired up, smelt a bit funny but hardly any smoke. And car heated up nice and quickly.

Ive not been able to test it for myself yet, but fingers crossed it might be ok. Might take it apart and give it a clean out anyway.

Another thing is to check the aux water  pump is running , you should hear it running for a couple of mins after the engine is turned off. Its located behind the engine on the bulkhead

Sounds like the secondary water pump is failing, common, which then causes the aux heater to shut down due to over heating. There are some threads on the forum where people have repaired or tried to repair them. I think they are around

the run on pump is just a gentle hum which you should be able to hear whilst sitting in the car, glove box area.

You might not hear the run on pump over the heating fan.  It's easier to "feel" it running when the engine is on.  As you have an Auto, I believe you have a 115 engine.  When you turn the engine off you should here it running for a couple of minutes afterwards.  It will start to run as soon as you switch on the ignition just make sure you turn off the heater fans.  The general trend appears to be that the brushes on the pump wear out around 80k miles.

The dosing pump makes a ticking/metallic clicking sound in operation.  This is normal.  There is an instruction from Ford to provide more audio isolation if the customer complains of audible ticking in the passenger compartment.
