Coliflower Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 Could anyone out there please help me. I have a 1.9tdi 130 bhp diesel galaxy 2005. It has the digital climate control unit that is suspected to be broken. No blow heaters will work nor any air so pumped out of the air inlets. The fuse keeps blowing when it is replaced. The garage says this is probably the climate control unit, apparently a common problem. A new unit costs over five hundred pounds! I have sourced a second hand one for eighty pounds. The question is are they easy to fit? Could anyone Advise me how to take the old one out and fit the new one? Yours hopefully Quote
Fraz-ktf Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 Hi. Whilst no expert with the Galaxy, I did the same with my VW Passat. It's fairly easy. If I recall, there is a bezel around the unit. This needs very carefully prising off to reveal 4 retaining screws. Undo these and pull the unit out. Unplug and Fanny's your aunt. It's a bit like removing a radio head unit and no more daunting. Good luck Quote
gregers Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 before you consider replacing this unit, have you followed the instructions which i think was done by seatkid?.iirc within the unit is a tiny fan that clogs up,once this was cleaned out everything was working.do a search or perhaps the link to the thread will be posted for you?. seatkid Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) before you consider replacing this unit, have you followed the instructions which i think was done by seatkid?.iirc within the unit is a tiny fan that clogs up,once this was cleaned out everything was working.do a search or perhaps the link to the thread will be posted for you?. The fans were still working though gregs the faulty sensor fan made the unit flash and threw a 65535 error code (unit defective - which technically it was but wasnt if you know what I mean). Before buying a replacement unit, I suggest just removing the unit, disconnecting the 2 connectors (I think) at the back and check if the fuse doest blow without the unit fitted. Its not a common fault as its never been reported here. But wiring faults are relatively common. Edited September 23, 2013 by seatkid Quote
Coliflower Posted September 24, 2013 Author Report Posted September 24, 2013 Thanks for the updates. I will be attempting to fix the problem tomorrow. I get back to you then. Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Oh what a nightmare. I purchased a second hand unit. I followed seatkids advice and removed the old unit, then tested the fuse and it blew!! Any other ideas gents.? Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Also with the new unit plugged in it flashes on and off twenty seven times. Any idea gents? Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Also! The old unit I thought was broken does not flash on and off when I start the car. Also when I press the buttons it does seem to make a sound as though something is switching on. I am starting to think the old unit is not broken, but something else in the system seems 'stuck' so the fans will not work. Any ideas on this gents?! Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) I suspected as much. The old unit is probably OK, your new unit is flashing because it has an internal fault - i.e. the internal sensor fan may be clogged. You need to find the wiring fault - I'll have a butchers at the circuit diagram later tonight - what is the fuse no that is blowing and what rating? I would start by inspecting the looms going to back of the control unit - look back up them checking for wiring caught/chafed around bodywork metal. Edited September 25, 2013 by seatkid Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 That's great. Thanks a tonne. The fuse is number 19 and a 5a fuse. I know, as I've used about ten up!!! I'm at my wits end with this ac! Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Are you sure its fuse 19? Fuse 19 does go to the a/c unit but also supplies many other things (I think as a relay voltage supply) Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Yes. It's definitely number 19. Quote
viperclive Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Which means the problem may not be AC unit but something else supplied by fuse 19, have you thought of jury rigging 12v direct to unit to see if it works? Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 To be honest I am convinced the ac control works. It must be shorting out from somewhere else. Just don't know where to start! Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) This I think is the loom http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/au/au.mycat?SelPg&t=T3rERIV6xETCesREDSCsfX47nWIcI5nuinDERH4lRHRPesY7r1jASE9MglxPWsTOQikExet63kjVU0BCz3jveeebDAADgPybJorx6PwTHolYIP7aIDjHZR9ypIa/m43aOCx1Av9__c_dCEslC1j0J0feSu5kDownBk8RJmBcVYU/OVoI_mTLxqx7AwdXdTz/3VMGwM2Xkmwf with connector 35 I think is the CC unit connector. :o Are there are other electrical faults on your vehicle? (which may be related) What I would do is first inspect as far back up the cc wiring loom as possible to see if there is snagging/damage. (The wire in question is pin 19 - black/yellow wire) THEN - as this loom carries wiring going to the door gaitors - I would check them for broken/shorted wires - a bit of a long shot, but shouldnt take too long to check. Then I would disconnect the battery (only if you have the radio code!), and check with a multimeter for a short from that pin 19 to chassis. Also from the fuse connection F19 to chassis (one end will go to battery +12v terminal mind) If you have heated washer jets (open bonnet look under the jets) - then disconnect them (electrically). Recheck if short still there... Do you have xenon discharge lights? (Viperclive's suggestion of rewiring an independent fused supply may turn out to be the simplest solution) Edited September 25, 2013 by seatkid Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 That's great intel. Thanks. I don't have xenon lights. Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Oh yes. My side lights stopped working about six months ago when I changed the left hand headlight bulb. Quote
Coliflower Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 There are a few broken wires in my door gators, I will fix them first as this hopefully will be the problem. Then if not move onto the other suggestions. Thanks so much for the advice guys. Really appreciate it. Quote
Coliflower Posted September 27, 2013 Author Report Posted September 27, 2013 Update!!! Managed to splice a couple of wires in the door loom that had broken. A small wire that immediately lit up the door safety light on the off side rear door and on both the nearside and offside door electric window wires that were broken. I still have not got my side lights coming on. I place the 5a fuse in socket 19 and pop! It blew again. I cannot see any more split or broken wires in the door loom. This is so frustrating. Quote
SilverBeast Posted September 27, 2013 Report Posted September 27, 2013 Have you checked the wires to the tailgate too? In the rubber tube at the top on the left hand side.Did you check all the wires (some break inside the insulation) or just those that had visible breaks. Quote
Coliflower Posted September 27, 2013 Author Report Posted September 27, 2013 No I didn't. I have a good look at these on Monday. Thanks again for your help. Quote
viperclive Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Looking at the circuit diagrams that seatkid added, the first one shows that fuse 19 supplies side lights, yours don't work, check wiring at side lights, take lamps out and check if they are ok, with all those out and disconnected try a new fuse, if it oops I would suggest it will be heated rear window, wiring in rubber boot shorting, well that should keep you busy for Sunday lol. Coliflower Posted September 30, 2013 Author Report Posted September 30, 2013 Ladies and gents. A huge thank you for your help in this. I have finally found the problem. A wire that should go to the heated washer wipers (not fitted on my car) had broken onto where the bonnet closes. This caused the short. I spliced it together and no more fuses blowing. The ac is working well now. It seems it worked all along!!! Thanks so much guys for your advice. Without it I would still not know where to look. Quote
