hi there, i have read simular issues regarding wires in door gaitors, I have the later 98 mk1 galaxy, now and then i find when i go to the car in morning, i found the windows have opened and locks have unlocked. I have looked at the wires in the gaitors, but no obvious signs, a liitle wear and tear on some though but not sure if that was enough to cause problems.

Any ideas if it is not the wires. I havent taken door card off yet, I am a bit scared i might not be able to put it back on again but if needs must then i will have to take it off to have a better look at things. As this is not only windows but also central locking, i'm assuming it is to do with central locking. Could it be a dodgy relay, or if like so many galaxy's, if it still may be the wiring, could it be further inside the door which is why i cant see obvious damage in the gaitor. Many thanks.

1. check for broken wires in drivers door gaiter.

2. also passenger rear door

3. lastly the tailgate wires in gaiter in right hand top corner when looking at open tailgate

my mk2 eats drivers door and tailgate wires like theres no tomorrow

I had similar problems on my mk1 galaxy it turned out to be an ecu module in the well under the passenger seat .if you look under the front passenger seat theres a sliding panel pull it out and you should see an ecu module,i think it controls central locking maybe even windows as they seem to be linked in some way .On mine water had got in under the seat and got into the module easy peesy to replace i managed to get a second hand one on ebay for £25 .i opened up the old one and gave it a clean but the inside had to much water damage (had oxidised) hope this helps

Hi mate, just to let you know , my mk1 is the later 98 reg and there is no ecu module under the passenger seat. Anyone knows where it is and what it looks like could you let me know, I could just replace that and see if i still get any probs. Many thanks

Also check paddles on outer door handles, this can cause global opening of the windows.

Hi mate, sorry to sound silly but what do you mean by paddles, is it the handle that you pull, and if so do you mean they sometimes stick in the outer/open position.

Its called the GEM module and its located behind the fuses under the drivers side dash and very difficult to get to.

Its highly unlikely to be the GEM module, it is almost certainly the wiring in the door gaiters that is to blame. It is very very very common for wires to break/become expose and short here due to the constant flexing when doors open and the poor design (no offset) and poor quality wire (insulation that goes hard/brittle).

Tech FAQs section has three topics on the subject with plenty of pictures. Just pull back the rubber gaiters on the doors and inspect.

thanks for the advise, I havent had time at mo to go over the wires yet, just a thought though, does anyone know what colour cable I should be looking for. Many thanks.

It will be immediately apparent when you inspect the wiring - theres a whole bunch in those gaiters, just repair them and you should be OK.
