Hi.

I just lowered my spare wheel down to check the air pressure but now it won't wind back up!

It goes so far then it seems to "Slip back" a tad, then winds back up a tad, then slips again, ad infinitum

What's gone wrong or what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Checked the FAQ which shows how to strip them down. Mine just will not wind back in, it goes half an turn them slips back again.

What is the issue with it and is this the common problem that needs the stripping?

Thanks

The MKII has a different design to the MKI. It uses a nylon work and gear. If wound up too tightly, which I personally don't think is very tightly at all, the gear can split and slip. Mine did the same thing the first time I wound mine up. The MKI's is shell but prone to corrosion. I got one from a MKI from eBay, cleaned it up and Hammerited it and applied plenty of grease. The mounting holes points are the same for both and the winding mechanism lines up with the same aperture in the boot so it's a straight swap.

I stripped it down and sure enough, some of the teeth had sheared off.

I've repaired it by cutting the nylon gear wheel in half along it's length, spinning it 180 degrees (So that there are 2 places with half sheared teeth and half good teeth) and then I made a metal disc to sandwich between the nylon gear wheel halves and filed out the teeth into the metal.

I now have a fully working winch, with a metal toothed mid-point that will hopefully never be able to shear again.

I will make a separate post with photos, in case anyone fancies doing the same.

Haven't looked at mine for a while but iirc isn't it fitted with the outermost edge of the wheel face down so that you'd be able to get to the valve easily?
