I've got to put 3 tyres on the galaxy and get the air con looked at. That means another £300 or so. I was hoping the garage would do me a fault check but they don't do them. They can recommend some other garages or Fords - god forbid!.  I could look at buying the vagcom and software but I'm not too sure I know what I'd be looking at. Then I'd be back on here asking what it all means. Thats if I got it right anyway.

Scrounging time..Is there a member who lives around the Thetford area or within an hour or so? I'll stump for any costs or electrons used.  The climate control is flashing and I'll bet theres lots more need investigating but I need tyres and coolness for her ladyship first.  But a good idea of whats wrong from the vagcom would probably help....or keep me awake nights.  Thanks John

Peterborough's not toooooo far...Mr Dome.If nobody closer can help I'll pm if possible. The way I see it, if the car gets to Peterborough and back without trouble, then I'm happy.  Sunday ok,so far?  John

Theres only a few reasons why the CC flashes, its usually due to low pressure which means you need a regas (but could have a leak).

Other reasons for flashing CC I know of are faulty/stuck flap motors or a stalled sensor fan in the cc unit itself - none of these would stop the compressor from cooling.

So best bet is to take it to Kwikfit who will regas it for £49 and if it still dont work, they wont charge you anything for the regas.

But apparently winter starts tomorrow......

seat - how many times should the cc flash if its normal? Mines flashing 10-10-5 times. Its blowing but not ice cool. TBH its a bit ott for me and a simple dial with knobs like my toyota was ok. I was after an idea of what faults were on the car anyway.  So, if I take it to kwik fit and it leaks I don't pay?  Doesn't sound right- I'd be happy to pay if it was working and just needed gassing.  The garage I take it to will do a proper job - vacuum,re-oil and leak check and gas for £72. Sound ok?  John

That sounds like a bargain to me, mines been flashing for at least five years lol still get cold air though so my problem may be just a top up.

CC flashing on start up indicates a fault - if the compressor is not engaging to give cold air it is usually due to low or no gas (the 3-way pressure switch tells it and inhibits compressor.). Kwikfit will not charge if they regas your car and the air is no colder - the equipment they use is the same as any other garage/dealer - it automatically vacs the gas (and weighs), checks for a leak (by holding the vacuum for several mins) and regasses by weight and adds oil based on the recovered amount. However, if the gas subsequently leaks out after you drive away, they won't refund you - but I guess you already knew that.

If your a/c is still cold and the controls (flaps) work fine, I suggest you attempt to clean the tiny fan to the left of the LCD display (use a small brush and a vacuum cleaner) - this is a fan that draws air over a temperature sensor and gets clogged with dust over time. If you listen carefully with your ear next to the tiny grill, when you turn the ignition on, you should hear it whirring/winding up if it is still turning.

I have noticed what sounds like fans blowing in the back of the Gal. The blower arrangement needs an 8 year old to work it out...Lots to check over this weekend and some wiring to solder. Tyres first - its a big 'un.  John

Still in need of a reasonably near gal owner with a vagcom. Tires, battery and other sundries have dried my funds. Or does someone have a link to the correct lead/software and I can try it on my old windows xp laptop..John

Too far Clive. I'm in Norfolk by Snetterton track..20 miles from Norj.

The lead chrispb123456 linked to is the one I use.  Make sure you install the drivers that come with it.

The software is free to download from manufactureres site from the link in the ebay listing.  I use it on a Pentium III laptop with Windows '98 (though I have used it with Windows XP too on a Pentium iV).

For £6.95 it'll more than pay for itself if you intend to keep the car for some time.

I don't mind buying the thing. But another pair of eyes peeking over my shoulder would stop me scratching my bald head. Cheers
