Hi guys,

 

Ok I got this car a few weeks back and it had been sitting there for a while. It had a serious lack of power to the point that on my way back with it I was doing 70 on the M25 when I came to a fairly steep incline and I ended up doing 45!!!!

So far I have put some redex (don't know if this is any good) in it with a couple of tanks of diesel, changed the fuel filter and air filter and disconnected the maf but the car ran worse so I assume this is working.

 

It feels better than it did but still doesn't feel right.

 

 

 

It also will only rev to 3500-3750 rpm and won't go any higher whilst driving but if in neutral or park will happily rev higher.

 

Won't get anything over 70 out of it. Foot flat to the floor and just doesn't respond.

 

Still noticeably loose speed when it hits an incline. You would think you was driving a fully loaded milk float.

 

This morning when I went out I start as normal and went to pull away but the car only crawled forward and made no difference to how hard I pressed the pedal. Then about 10 seconds later decided it was going to go and was fine for the rest of the journey.

 

I do have a gearbox problem which I posted about (http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php/topic/25731-sorry-another-auto-gearbox-problem-2001-19tdi-ghia/) so I'm not sure if this is all linked but would really appreciate some help please guys as I don't know what to do or check next.

I dont know if the snap-on unit is any good but if it gave an all clear then theres a good chance its the MAF sensor that is faulty. Its difficult to give a definite test for the MAF sensor - the easiest way is to swap it for a known good one. But you can try disconnecting the MAF sensor and driving without, if it drives better without it definitely is the MAF sensor. If you change the sensor, make sure you get the correct part no as there are several versions depending on engine and they all look pretty much alike.

 

Another possibilty is the vacuum pipework has sprung a leak, or more commonly, the vane actuator mechanism in the turbo is seized and requires cleaning (you need to remove turbo for that) but these faults throw error codes (sometimes cryptic) in the diagnostic scan.

 

or perhaps the EGR valve is stuck open (usually through carbon gunk - again needs stripping to clean or replace).

Ok guys got a lead and plugged it in today. Came up with 3 faults.

 

17552 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Open or Short To Ground

P1144 - 35-10- -- Intermittent

 

17964

Now you can make a note of those codes then clear the codes, once you done that take car for a drive and then recheck see if the same faults return.

 

17552 could be from running the engine with MAF disconnected.

 

17964 is underboost which could be a leak in the air charge pipe work or damaged intercooler or maybe perished vacuum pipework on the boost control N75 valve, turbo actuator or vanes stuck
