greengalaxyman Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Got a problem with a 51 Reg 2.3 petrol/ manual. When stopping at junctions or stopping/ going slow the engine cuts out. The car will not restart immediately.... when turning the key , all dash lights come on, nothing happens and the starter motor will not turn over or fire up. After 3-4 minutes the car will start correctly. This problem has been getting worse over the past few days and I've had to take it off the road now.Has anyone suffered the same and what was the fix? Anyone got any ideas please? Thanks Quote
Argrdnr Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Check the idle control valve, I had that issue on an old car Quote
chrispb123456 Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Try changing relay 30 first, this causes intermittent cutting out and starting problems. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php/topic/8810-relay-30-replacement/?do=findComment&comment=68423 Quote
andymudge Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Has it been serviced at all , could be a simple as blocked filters if its stalling rather than just instant cut out. If its relay 30 you should see the door led's blinking when it cuts out and you try to restart. As to not being able to restart have you had the condition of your battery assessed , they can do this foc at Halfords for you. Edited July 14, 2013 by andymudge Quote
seatkid Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Check the fuse box in the engine bay for evidence of overheating as below Check the Battery Junction Box (in front of battery that red +ve lead from battery goes into). These are notorious for bad crimps on the top and second from top leads on the RHS. Open top and look for evidence of overheating/scorching/distortion. Link Quote
xavier Posted July 19, 2013 Report Posted July 19, 2013 seatkid, does that appy to petrol as well as diesel? Quote
greengalaxyman Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 eventually took the car to the main dealer, expecting charges of £££££'s. They fixed it in a day- changed the Starter Motor Relay Assembly. Costs with labour was £140. Not cheap but not too expensive either. Thanks for all replies. Quote
