Hi,

When I start the car up cold on a morning, it has little power (I live on a hill and it sometimes struggles to get off the mark in 1st gear...) It is okay after a short while and throughout the rest of the day.

It does however have a loss of power, compared to what it used to be like, it feels sluggish.

When I'm, accelerating going up the gears when in second if you start to get towards higher revs with your foot down, the car shakes and shudders, so I change up the gears and it does the same, toward the higher revs I have to let off the pedal a little bit to stop the shaking.

When I'm on the motorway I can get up to 70-80 or even higher provided I'm on even ground, or going downhill, but if I'm going uphill, it loses speed at 70 and will drop to around 60, sometimes meaning I have to switch down to 5th gear, to keep up to speed of around 50mph.

Any ideas what this may be?

There is no engine management light or any other light coming on for that matter, I'm going to get it booked into my loca Ford garage at some point this week but I was wondering if I'd find out if anyone else has had the same problem first.

Cheers for any help you give me!!

Kind Regards,
Gary

A couple of ideas, if you have a lap-top get a cable and VCDS. Faults can be logged in the ecu but without the engine management light flashing. What engine do you have? if it's the 1.9 TDI I'd actually suggest calling some local VW specialist garages and describe the problem, they might be more knowledgeable than Ford. Also when you say it gets better during the day, is it better when hot, or is it ok for the rest of the day even if allowed to cool right down? And have you checked the fluid levels to see if anything's dropping?

If its petrol its probably a coil pack on its was out.

Hi,

Sorry, I thought I'd added my car to my sig! I'm a little new to the forum ha.

It's a 2003 Ford Galaxy LX TDI 1.9

I will give a few VW Garages a ring and ask around, before I get it into Ford for diagnostics check.

I've checked for any fluids dropping but there has been no problems, When going up the hill first starting the car on a morning I have to really get the revs up high in first gear, or it just won't get up. But later in the day, even if I haven't used the car for a good few hours it usually seems fine.

The main issue is the lack of accellerating power when I'm trying to join a motorway or putting my foot down a little bit. It is slow to get to 50-60-70mph, and shudders if I start to reach near 2000revs with my foot down, if I let up off the pedal and go up a gear I can accelerate however it is slow.

Cheers for any help again guys!

I experienced similar symptoms when my roll restrictor bolt sheared - the bolt is basically the lower engine/gearbox mount and when it is broken your engine will not be in the right place...  There is useful information on the forum about it.   It is an easy/cheap fix - good luck!

Thanks for that, hopefully it is something cheap! I think my best option is to bite the bullet and get it into the local Ford Dealer, as the sooner I know what is wrong the the better, my uncle is a mechanic in a garage and once he knows what is wrong he will be able to fix.

I will post an update when I hear from Ford!

I have the same problem!. I have a 2005 1.9Tdi with 100k. Car can shake/judder on starting and again judders when changing up thru gears, along with apparent loss of power. I have corrected by switching off and on again (works sometimes) but it does come back again. I had it in a car electrics garage for a parking sensor and they said there was no other faults showing. I have been told it may be the dual mass clutch - could it be? or any other thoughts?

PD engines (i.e. Mk2 diesels) can suffer from faulty injector loom wiring/connectors. These make injectors operate intermittently usually when there is significant movement of the engine block and lead to a period of rough running /loss of power. The solution is a new (around £60 IIRC) or sometimes just removing the connectors to the injectors, then cleaning and tightening up the connector receptacles with some long nose pliers does the trick.

The wiring loom is under the rocker cover - photos etc are on the forum - search

Fuel filter, crikey! Thanks for coming back and posting an update. Do you know how many miles you've done since it was last changed?
